Mosquito Creek Nest Background - Nest to be replaced in 2021 to accommodate Development

This site had been very productive the past three years and will hopefully carry on this tradition. The past 3 years the nest has been located in a large black cottonwood just shore-ward and on the property line between the Burrard Yacht Club and the new Concert Properties immediately to the west. Concert Properties has been instrumental in overseeing that this nest remains productive. The Hancock Wildlife Foundation has been speaking for the eagles in overseeing that satisfactory options are developed for the eagles as the existing nest will be disturbed and then removed. This 2020 season it was decided to hold off developments until the nesting season is complete and the adults depart on their migration. Then HWF will erect the Artificial Pole & Nest just offshore of the Mosquito Creek mouth and also, as a bit of insurance, erect artificial supports in a large cottonwood that is due north on the shore of Mosquito Creek. The City of North Vancouver has cooperated with allowing this nest to stay there up to 3 years before their activities on the Creek shoreline will be sufficient to disturb the eagles. By that time the Concert Properties on the shoreline will be largely completed and the eagles will have minimal disturbance and hopefully occupy the Artificial Pole & Nest.

This whole project has been a cooperative effort between Concert Properties, the City of North Vancouver, the Wildlife Branch of the Forestry, Lands, Natural Resources Ministry and the Hancock Wildlife Foundation speaking for the eagles. Primary in this are our North Shore Eagle Monitors under the expert guidance of Sally McDermott. It is our hope that this group will continue to monitor this eagle pair's activities and post those comments on this Web Site. (The North Shore Monitors or HWF coordinators are contactable via the Private Emails on this Forum site.)

Upcoming, Concert Properties have agreed to sponsor two CAM's on the new Artificial Pole. As soon as these are functional and the eagles are using the site, possibly initially as a feeding platform, any keeners can get checked out on how to manipulate the pan-tilt-zoom cams with their 20x magnification HD lens. This will enable the ‘zoomers’ to follow the eagles hunting and then as they occupy the nest and rear their young. If you have not yet followed these intimate details of an eagle pair you might try watching CAM's that presently have young: the Delta2, White Rock, and Surrey Reserve nests. If you get sufficiently interested you can be shown how to zoom the cams for all to follow.

It has been a pleasure to watch this nest over past 3 years and yes change is coming to this eagle pair in that their nest will disappear around September 2020 due to the nearby Concert development as David mentioned. Our collective hope is that this Eagle pair will build a new nest nearby and continue their prolific ways.

In 2018 they produced three eaglets (lets) all of whom were seen fledge successfully.
2018 06 07 Three hungry lets being fed - https://vimeo.com/419936244/9a7c2ae843
2018 07 24 Three lets branching just prior to fledge - https://vimeo.com/419936179/1257fceeef

In 2019 they produced two lets one of which fledged successfully and the other was blown out of the nest on a very windy day (July 7 2019) and rescued by OWL who cared for it until it was able to fly then returned it to the nest area for release.
2019 05 27 Two lets enjoying the sunny weather - https://vimeo.com/419946767/38781a5a59
2019 07 17 Two lets in the rain the morning of windstorm - https://vimeo.com/419946578/57aac9c45c
2019 07 17 OWL Rescue of one let after being blown out of the nest in the windstorm, see attachment

In 2020 they produced two more lets who as of this post are doing quite well.

Welcome Alex!

And thank you for the the background history on this nest and the wonderful videos of the eaglets.

We look forward to future observations, photos, etc. from you and anyone else who visits this nest. It will be an interesting few years as we watch to see how this Adult pair will react to the upcoming construction!

Alex, please check your PM's (personal messages - upper right corner of this page)
