WELCOME TO THE 2020-SEASON

LM12 is back at Loch of the Lowes

We’re delighted to let you know that LM12 has returned to Loch of the Lowes for the ninth year. LM12 touches down at Loch of the Lowes

At 15:33 this afternoon we saw him descend onto the nest, clutching a fish. This was a fairly fleeting appearance and he left after just a few seconds, pursued by two crows.

We’re sure to see him spend more time on the nest in the coming day. He’ll start to clear up and arrange the nest, in anticipation of the arrival of his mate LF15.

The new bird on the block

On Saturday just after 12pm a ‘mystery’ ringed female appeared on the nest. The next dayshe was kind enough to give her a very clear view of the blue darvic ring on her left leg ring, allowing us to ID her as NC0.

We’ve now heard that NC0 was ringed by the late Ciril Ostroznik, Brian Etheridge and Adam Ritchie on 3 July 2016 at a nest near Loch Ness.

LM12 and NC0 have spent a bit of time together but they don’t seem too sure of each other yet. Our breeding male LM12 has been showing mixed signals, displaying a lot of defensive mantling behaviour, but also trying to mate with NC0. So far she has not seemed impressed with these amorous attempts, or by being presented with clods of grass rather than fish!

More birds are appearing around Loch of the Lowes. On Sunday afternoon an osprey, possibly a male based on the chest markings, dive-bombed the nest at high speed. You can see how close it comes to a clearly startled NC0.

LM12 and NC0's new partnership is beginning to exhibit some normal paired behaviour. There was no fighting over this fish that was brought to the nest this afternoon

SWINWK wrote: It's not looking good that there will be a nest to view for Loch of the Lowes this year on cam at least. The ospreys have endured 2 incidents of human interference near their nest within the last 2-3 weeks or so. The 1st was the kayaker and the 2nd was last weekend when a man and his children could be heard talking and the man suppressed a sneeze or cough. Both incidents either caused 1 or both osprey to fly from the nest. Here is an update:

So sad to hear about those dammned noises & sneezings by tourists...

but there were some more disturbances by an unringed female intruder which was chased by NC0 >> scyllas video:

I guess there is still a little chance for the current breeding pair to return or
another osprey pair might overtake this nest in the following days...

I don't think this can be the female osprey we've already seen,
because it couldn't possibly be confused with NC0. I can't even say for sure if it's male or female, tho it looks more female in size. Somebody will now tell me it's 100% Laddie. But there's no Spanish dancer.

Loch of the Lowes, Scotland: NC0 was on the nest.
Sandra: Really good to see NC0 defending the nest and area - she seems to be maturing - if Laddie and NC0 are busy guarding their area they really can't settle/relax

I hope things settle down for Laddie and NCO. Signs to tell people to keep quiet?

Following an incident this afternoon where disturbance by a kayaker caused the ospreys to leave their nest for over two hours, we'd like to remind members of the public not to approach or access the reserve at this time.

Our reserve is monitored 24 hours a day, including by CCTV. Access to the loch and surrounding areas of the reserve is not permitted from March - September during the breeding season. Due to years of persecution from which they are still recovering, ospreys are classed as a Schedule One species.

They are legally protected from any kind of disturbance, including during the critical period of nest building and pair bonding. Please help support the recovery of ospreys in Scotland by letting nature go about its daily business, and staying away from the loch during this critical time of year.

carolyn: In addition to that please remind the Loch of the Lowes – Coronavirus update 25 March 2020
We would like to remind people that the reserve, woodland trail and hide are closed to the public.

With regards to our regular breeding pair of ospreys, rest assured that despite the current situation the nest will continue to be monitored around the clock throughout the season.

With around 300 breeding pairs of ospreys in the UK, ospreys are still recovering in numbers from near extinction and years of persecution, and as such as are now a legally protected ‘Schedule 1 Species’. Any disturbance to them during the breeding season, including during the current nest building period is a criminal offence, and can jeopardise the birds’ ability to settle on a nesting territory, produce and raise young

We will keep you updated through our main webpage, blogs and social media pages.
https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/20 ... us-update/

It's a really mass that people breaking the rules of a nature reserve for their own sake and well beeing in the woods cannot be prosecuted and fined because nobody of the security officers are there...an neither drones will identify those idiots.

Yes, maybe they can start enforcing somehow. I find people to be stupid in a lot of cases....here they left parks open trusting people would keep distance, so.....they came in groups and did not. They closed the parks. Good move.....
