Hanover Pa. 2018/2019 Bald Eagle Cam

Post by photofun » Fri Nov 30, 2018 10:55 am

Welcome to the Hanover Bald Eagle cam in Codorus State Park Hanover in York County Pennsylvania. The eagles names are Freedom (male) and Liberty (Female)
Helpful ID guides below to tell them apart. This is the fifth season of nesting with the cams installed. Thanks to HDonTap for taking over the nest and setting up new cams to allow us to continue watching this nest.

Back on October 26th it was reported in the Evening Sun (https://www.eveningsun.com/story/news/2 ... 761778002/) the following: The Pennsylvania Game Commission is no longer overseeing the Hanover bald eagle cam that has monitored a pair of eagles — viewers have nicknamed them "Freedom" and "Liberty" — that live in Codorus State Park.

The commission held the permit to the livestream, so if another group wants to continue the livestream it would have to apply for a permit, said Travis Lau, the director of communications at the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

There are a few reasons that the PGC is discontinuing involvement with the eagle cam, according to Lau:

The tree that the nest is in has a crack. The nest has also cracked. So there is no telling the future of either.
The location of the tree and nest make it difficult to get access to the camera for maintenance.
The commission is short staffed and it takes resources to be educators about what goes on in the feed.

HDOntap has taken over the project and are setting up new cams. There will be a 4K cam, a POV cam and a one with IR. They are planning on going live Dec.3 2018!

This is the fifth season of this nest cam. This pair of bald eagles has made its home in Codorus State Park, just outside Hanover, in rural York County, Pennsylvania. They got their names through a contest where local people voted on names. Mom is Liberty and Dad is Freedom. They have been nesting in this tree for about 14 yrs now but there is not a lot of history on the nest before the camera was installed and started broadcasting in 2015. The nest is 75' up in an oak tree.

History of the nest starting 2015

2015 Season Season 1
2 eggs were laid
2/14 @ 5:50 pm
2/17 @ 4:45 pm

Hatch
3/24 egg #1 hatched on day 38 H 1
3/25 egg #2 hatched on day 36 H2

Fledged- An eaglet jumped up on the cam and pushed it down so we were not able to see much action and also there was PS on the lens
around 6/14-6/19 both left the nest.

2016 Season 2 Another cam was installed with sound and IR. Great views!

2 eggs were laid
2/18 @ 3:13pm
2/21 @ 4:15pm

Hatch
3/28 #1 egg (?) 39 days H3
egg # 2 did not hatch

3/30 eaglet passed away
After about 91 days the egg finally was destroyed.
May 31st part of the nest collapsed.

Watching the eagles is fun but sometimes it is hard to tell which one is which. Obviously the one that lays the egg is the female but after that it get hard to tell. Here are a few indicators to help you identify them. Even then it sometimes is hard. Females generally brood the eggs and eaglets over night. Our nest here is no different.

Dad or Freedom has a notch in his neck line, can be seen most of the time but not always. At the moment one of his center tail feathers is shorter causing a nice little indent in the tail arrangement. His wing tips or the primaries are shorter then Mom's and when crossed on the back do not extend to the tail
.

Mom or Liberty is larger as most females are. Her neckline can look straight but it has a little rise in the middle. Her wing tips almost touch the end of her tail and she doesn't always cross them.

Multiple people or devices on your network will impact the bandwidth available.
Get suggestions for troubleshooting buffering here.

Get support for issues with comments (including log in issues) by emailing [email protected].

The Hanover Bald Eagle Nest Cams are provided in collaboration with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a global leader in raptor conservation science and education, and Comcast Business, which is providing the Internet connectivity for the live broadcast.

December 3, 2018 Day one of new cams streaming live!

As promised at noon the cams went live, I think, it took me about an hour to get one to come on. Lots of buffering. I was only able to get two of the tree to come on. The 4K is still a mystery to me as I write this.
Beautiful clear photos from both cams.

12 3 18 01 day one of cam POV.jpg
12 3 18 02 day one of cam POV.jpg
Will keep trying to get that third cam to come live.

Finally I tried Chrome, I ususally always use Firefox and on Chrome the 4K cam came up

Wonderful pics photofun
The Hanover Eagles made their first nest visit since the cameras went live on Wednesday, 12/5/18, at approximately 10:40 AM Eastern Time. In this video, you can see the eagles in the "Sentinal Tree", flying around, and ultimately landing in the nest. The visiting squirrel narrowly missed their arrival!
