Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
My apologies for not posting in a while ... but I have been visiting the Olaves!
On June 11, Ma and Pa were on different trees on opposite sides of the nest. But both pics were into the rising sun so are quite blown out
Pa was also sitting within sight of Pa Browning, though they seemed to be pretending to ignore each other!

Meanwhile there were definitely two eaglets and they were feeding on something with feathers!
Sadly, as is often the case some bits of plastic around the nest

Thanks for the update and pics Heather.

I love that you caught the 2 adults perched fairly close but ignoring each other. And how great to see 2 youngsters! Well done.heatherj wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:14 pmMy apologies for not posting in a while ... but I have been visiting the Olaves!

Thanks Marg and Sandra!
The tides were perfect on July 9 so I was able to walk along the beach to visit the nest. I saw one adult perched on a tree near the nest. I think it was Pa because he just looks so sleek. The 2 eaglets were sitting up in the nest with one perched on a branch. As is usual one bigger than the other but both looking healthy and happy. Both were quiet and didn't call out at all while I was there so hopefully that means they are well fed. The one on the left was in a bit of a funny position but that could be because s/he was perched on a sloping branch? But it does mean that s/he has branched!
There was a small flock of gulls on the rocks below the nest and I think Pa was eyeing them up for likely candidates for a late breakfast! He was in exactly the same spot and position when I left

Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
That is a strange perch posture Heather! I wonder what it was up to.
Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
I was wondering if the eaglet maybe just had something really big in his/her crop?
I visited the nest yesterday and ..... there was no nest! But everyone was OK.
Ma and Pa were perched nearby and one eaglet was on the branch where the nest used to be so easy to see. But it took me quite some time to see the other eaglet. Eventually I saw a brown tail poking out from behind some branches close to Ma and Pa. Phew!
Lots of twigs and branches at the base of the tree so I guess it's a new nest next year. I think they had a partial collapse at the end of the season last year and a full collapse much earlier the previous year. Building a stable nest is a tricky thing.
So 1 fledge and 1 branch, though perhaps unintentionally!
Pics to follow.

Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
Mixed emotions here. Great to find both eaglets safe and continuing to mature. Very sad that the nest is gone. Let's hope the new one is easy to find next season!
Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
Yes Sandra I agree. Definitely mixed emotions. And I think that looking back at my July 9 photos, the nest had already mostly collapsed even then. I will post a few photos from different dates for comparison further down.
But first some pics of Ma and Pa from July 19. As I walked towards the nest, Ma and Pa were perched close to the nest tree. Ma on top and Pa below I think. Then the next pic is from below the lower eagle who I think is Pa.

And now a pic of where the nest used to be! With one eaglet sitting on the branch - I would expect this to be the younger of the two? I don't see his/her feet. They might just be hidden behind the bend of the branch or perhaps that s/he is not yet able to perch?
Then another angle of the same eaglet.

Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
After quite some time hunting around I eventually saw a brown tail and yellow feet poking out from quite close to Ma and Pa but definitely away from the nest tree. I couldn't get a good view of this eaglets head but i's good to know that s/he had survived the nest crash

Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
Here are some pics of the nest to show that the collapse had already started in June.
I walked as close as I could to the bottom of the nest tree but there were lots of wild rose bushes at the base so that wasn't very close. But I did see piles of twigs and sticks that most likely came from the nest. At that point I hadn't seen the older eaglet so I was trying to see if there was an eaglet on the ground. Luckily I didn't see one!

Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
These eaglets had to spend a good few weeks without a full nest. That they both survived all this time is marvellous.
Re: Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2017/2018 season
So happy to read that two eaglets managed so well after the nest collapse. Thanks for all the updates and pictures Heather.
