Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - Seasons 2018-2024

Re: Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018
Thank you Karen and Sharon
In the year of 15/16 we saw one of the eaglets that fell out of the eggs when the egg hit the ground.
That eaglet looked like it was ready to hatch which made it even more sad.
I remember that Stewart took a picture of it.
Both Ma and Pa were looking around on the ground.
Yes 5 years of disaster no wonder the Hastings eagles seemed so freaked out.
Question: What on earth is wrong here? This cannot be normal.

Thanks for letting me know about the gender rule, I get very personal when observing and naturally use he and she when I talk and used the names for dialogue. So I will refer to the eldest eagle Joey as eaglet 1 and Darla as eaglet 2. As I mentioned before, Joey (eaglet 1) is more advanced in its development as it started eating on its own and branching out much sooner than the eaglet 2.
Re: Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018
Annemie, Stan and Vicki sorry to hear about the nest collapsing but glad that the two eaglets are in the tree. This has happened twice that I know of here on the Sunshine Coast and the eaglets all fledged after being fed on branches.
Re: Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018
Thanks for the words of encouragement Marg
I'll remain optimistic that all we play out well
As of today "below" was a bit of a challenge to spot on this rainy morning. Only after I headed further east down the paved park road that runs beside the nest did I spot it hanging off the end of a south eastern branch at 9 AM. Hanging right over a very busy Hastings St. during the morning rush "Up" was branching up onto Ma's favorite perch.
Have another look later in the day.....

I have some EXCELLENT news to report
"Below" is back up at the remains of the nest to join its sibling. I would have loved to have seen how it made it there but the bottom line is it's now in a better place to get fed and make a fledge down the road

Joey! That is excellent news! I knew h/s could do it! I just kept thinking of the 2009 Sidney eaglet "Tiny"! He got knocked off the nest on July 4th and finally made it all the way over to the "old" nest which Mom an Dad Sidney were using as a feeding platform for his siblings, on July 13!

July 10 after 6pm: Here's some exciting photos of eaglet1 who made it back up to the nest branch. He's having a hopping wing-flapping good time while eaglet2 watches.

July 10 after 6pm. Mom shows up and briefly hangs out in the nest with eaglet2 while eaglet1 hangs out on the branch.

Both eaglets are where they should be today
When I spotted them this morning both were having a shade break on each side of the remains of the nest
No adults spotted....

Oh my, so much drama to catch up on! Thankfully your lower eaglet somehow got up where it wanted to be and perhaps where more feeding will happen.
I was reminded of Tiny too Sharon. Then Pa and the other 2 disappeared while Ma stayed and fed Tiny for another 2 weeks was it?
Thank you for such good coverage here, both in commentary and pictures, including your video Annemie. I can tell you all love your eagles.

Re: Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018
Well the fun at the Hastings/PNE is continuous folks
One of the two had found its way half way down the tree last night. That's a long hop so I think it took a short flight and realized it could only go so far ...the strong winds at the time could have been a factor where it ended up in the tree.
I'll check this morning on the latest.
Oh the PNE put on 2 new signs near the tree about the eagle nest also indicating keeping dogs away from the area, don't try and pick one up if on the ground and they left detailed info on how to contact OWL if you spot one on the ground or if appears to be injured...…..impressed!

Re: Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018
Both eaglets have appeared to have fledged folks. I only say "appeared" because I could not spot the 2nd eaglet anywhere in the area. No reports by PNE ground staff of one on the ground and I took a good look around myself.
I did see the remaining one take several impressive flights to many of the other high trees nearby. When I headed back it was perched on a branch high above the location of the remains of the nest.
If I spot #2 at a later visit I'll let everyone know

Wonderful news I hope Stan! At least for sure wonderful for the fledgling you saw and PNE's sign to keep dogs away and contact OWL if one is spotted grounded.
