HWF Welcomes Captiva Island Eagles Cam For Their 4th Season With Us

In 2009 it was observed that a pair of Eagles had taken over an Osprey nest on a privately owned property on Captiva Island. Until 2017 when new owners took over the property the nest was not actively monitored. In 2018 the property owners installed cams but at that time only for their own viewing. Wanting to share their cam with everyone the owners of the property decided to livestream the nest for season 2020-2021. In partnership with AEF and Crow, this was made possible.
Season 2021-2022 brought change. The cams went live again but under the partnership with Window to Wildlife and CROW which is currently the same.

The Eagle Nest Cam is managed by the Window To Wildlife.

There are 3 cams available to watch:
Overhead View - with 24/7 Chat
Side Cam
Long Range

The nest is located on Captiva Island just off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida on private property and not accessible to the public. It is approximately 75 feet off the ground and 6 feet wide in an Australian Pine Tree.

Connie And Clive
* Connie is the Resident Female Eagle and has been around since 2009. The last estimate is that she is 20 years old as of 2023.
* Clive is the Resident Male Eagle and has been with Connie since 2021. Clive's age is unknown but based on his arrival in 2001 he would have to be at least 8 years old or older as of 2023.

2022 Hurricane Ian & The Re-Build of the Nest
On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian raked a path of destruction devastating the state of Florida and the Gulf Coast. In its path were Sanibel and Captiva Island which sustained enormous damage from it.
From early footage of the island, it was seen that the nest was gone but the nest tree, though suffering some damage had held up to the storm.

Once access was granted to Window to Wildlife, they entered the property to assess the damage and the cost it would take to rebuild the Eagle's and Osprey's nest and re-install the cams. A GoFundMe was set up to help with the expenses and with the help of many caring and loving followers of the nest who donated to the cause on November 3, 2022, Window to Wildlife and its team re-enter the property once again and Re-built the Eagles and Osprey nest and re-installed the cams.
At that time the Eagles had already chosen an alternate tree to build a new nest and the fear was that they might not come home. It was observed shortly after that Connie and Clive had come home and had started their own renovating of the nest

Eaglets Of Captiva

Connie and Clive

2022-2023
Two eggs were laid this season but only 1 egg hatched on January 10, 2023. Named CE9 at hatched, CE9 was renamed Connick after Connor and Nick from Window Of Wildlife.
2023-02-02 010.jpg

On April 4 2023 Connick fell off the nest. It was observed that Connick was losing flight feathers prior to the fall and most likely the cause of the fall. Connick was rescued by CROW and SCCF and eventually placed in the care of Audubon Center For Birds Of Prey in hopes of being released one day on Captiva Island once flight feathers are grown back

2021-2022
Two eggs were laid this season but neither one hatched. Possibility of being infertile due to lack of mating time

Connie and Joe

Joe
Joe was Connie's original mate but in February 2021 Joe got into a territorial battle. Joe was injured in the battle and shortly after disappeared. As to what became of him, we do not know. Connie and Joe had a total of 8 eaglets hatch since the new property owners purchased the property. As to how many eaglets Connie and Joe had prior is unknown to me.

2020-2021
* Eggs Laid: Egg #1 November 4, 2020 / Egg #2 November 8, 2020
* Both eggs hatched on December 14, 2020 :/ Egg one at 2:31AM (day 40) and Egg two at 8:24AM (day 36)
* Peace - Passed away on January 13, 2021
* Hope - Passed away on January 24, 2021
Rodenticide poisoning was determined to be the cause

Some Information of Interest

Audubon Centre for Prey of Birds has an Eagle Watch Program in Florida that monitors active nest locations, and possible disturbances or threats to nesting activities.

Eagle Watch Program
https://cbop.audubon.org/conservation/a ... ch-program

One of the many things they monitor is also location of the nests. On Captiva Island, there are 4 nests of which 3 of them were monitored by the Eagle Watch Program. All 3 nests last season were occupied.
Connie and Clive's nest (LE087) is very close to another nest just further up (LE131). Captiva Island is not big and the distance between them is smaller than it looks on the map below.

Connick

As the season progresses we can not forget our Loved Connick who was unable to Fledge due to the loss of his flight feathers. As information is made available I will continue to document his progress throughout the season.

𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐎𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐤:
To the many viewers of Captiva Eagles Nest, Connick has been deemed unreleasable and will be moved to the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C in early of 2024. Connick continued to drop feathers and with no other symptoms, his team determined that it is likely the result of a genetic condition. Connick will be placed in an open-air Bald Eagle enclosure there. One other eagle is in their care at the present, a young female named Acadia.
