Surrey Reserve 2020-2021 Observation and Discussion

6:12 am There was a quick in and out last evening, I think by Dad - it was very fast - at 8:43 pm. (CC398 you were busy zooming on the South cam at the time!) He didn't bring anything to eat and the kids were disappointed.

Another now you see me, now you don't! (:53)

I did check the DVR from early evening until this morning but all was quiet and peaceful - neither one moved from their spot all night until 4:30 his morning - not even for a poop shot! I also recorded the entire 7:47 pm perching scene with both on the branch - going back and forth between the North and South cams before they flew up trying to ID which was which. I won't post it - much too long. FWIW, I think Tucca is on the inside nearest the trunk and Tiku at the end of the perch - IMHO anyway!

I also have some video from the perching yesterday evening - also too long to post, but I may try to make a "highlights" video, recording parts of the two videos I have so we can see them flying up and down and some of the activity while they were sitting side by side. It may be a day or two before I can do that, but it was pretty amazing to watch!

Thanks for getting that shot, CC - I keep forgetting that the North cam does show the little perch, and it does provide different information about what's happening!

I'm going back in on South to check the upper eagle's tail feathers.

Upper eaglet - Tiku??

Food drop!

This is the lower eaglet - Tucca arriving first.

Tiku (?) flew down a moment later, then went to the little perch.

Now to check the dvr and try to figure out what happened.

Adult arrived at 8:21 with something that looked like maybe part of a dead gull? Eaglet from the little perch was down almost instantly. After having looked at the dvr several times, I'm pretty sure the adult was Res.

Adult left quickly as the eaglet on the high perch flew down, landing where he/she had been standing.

The eaglet from the higher perch (Tiku?) watched for a minute or so, then flew up to the little perch.

8:39:24 Both Eaglets fell after one jumped and landed. Tiku and Tucca are gone. An adult has landed and is just sitting there. 911!!

Going with the assumption that Tucca got the food

Tiku watches from the little perch while Tucca works on the food item - I'm thinking roadkill? Looks a bit dried out.

Tiku flies down into the nest and grabs the food item; Tucca doesn't try to defend it, and I suspect Tucca was close to giving up on it. After this shot, Tiku pulled it away and Tucca backed off.

Seeing flapping on North cam - under 2021 in date

I think that's the one under the nest that I'm seeing on South.

One of them was way up on the trunk on the left - I think that one will make it back to the nest soon.


Added on June 27:

Description from the video: June 24 2021, 8:55 am - both eaglets at our Surrey Reserve bald eagle cam nest accidentally left the nest at 8:39 am when they bumped into each other on a perch while practicing flying from branch to branch. Both almost 12-week-old eaglets ended up in the branches beneath the nest - and Dad Sur quickly arrived to check on them. Older eaglet Tiku recovered first - you can see him/her flapping on the branches (the angle is deceptive - Tiku is quite a ways down). This video includes his/her true fledge, flying away from the tree, at 9 am. Mom Res arrived with a fish at 9:01 am - a tactic eagles use to encourage newly fledged youngsters to return to the nest - but no one came back. It took younger eaglet Tucca a little longer to fledge - she or he finally got untangled and flew off on June 26. Tiku finally returned to the nest on June 25; as of the morning of June 27, we are still waiting for Tucca to return. ~JudyB

One in tree flew off - she's doing fine. Other one may take a while to get out of thick part of tree, but should figure it out - too many branches to fly, but they're good at climbing.
