Hi Gary, JudyB, Rita & all!
Gary you are so right about JudyB! She is phenomenal when it comes to data collection! We are so lucky to have JudyB at Hancock Wildlife!
We also appreciate having you back with us again Gary & for all of your valuable insights & information & your incredible spreadsheets! We are incredibly lucky to have someone with your skills on our Team!
Those are indeed yellow-billed magpies who moved into the eagle's territory about 2 years ago. Since then they have set up 5 nests in nearby trees on Eagle Island so they will be frequent visitors in the nest area again this year! They tend to pester the eagles a bit, dive bomb them at times, similar to crows that way, but nothing our eagles can't handle! They are also quite vocal so I'm sure you will hear them squawking in the background a lot on the Eaglecam!
Sorry I've been so out of touch for the last week or so! My hubby & I took a much-needed vacation last week after finishing up the Eaglecam Project! We just got back on Friday so I'm still a little worn out from all of the driving!
I stayed in touch with some of our awesome Ground Crew members while I was away, and I was over the moon excited to hear from Sue & Barbara that Miss Liberty was spotted on Pond Perch one morning!!!!! It is always such a relief to see her back & healthy each year, especially as she gets older!
I can't wait to see her myself but I have been looking each day since Saturday & have not spotted her or Guardian quite yet! I'm sure they are out & about exploring and reclaiming their nesting territory! We have received a few reports of eagles hunting the river down along Riverview Golf Course. They do normally spend some time down in the southern part of their nesting territory too!
Here is Sue's photo of our lovely Miss Liberty looking as beautiful as ever, who is now 22 years old, on Pond Perch last week...

Re: Redding, CA - 2020-21 - Bald Eagle Cam
The Ground Crew saw 2 eagles on Pond Perch, and they thought the 2nd eagle was Guardian?
But when I looked at the photo on my computer, I saw a lot of dark feathers near the eyes that Guardian used to have when he first paired up with Liberty, but no longer has them since he is a year older now?
I also noticed that the width of the beak seems to be wider and looks more like a female eagle to me?
My thinking was that this could be one of Liberty's offspring(possibly Pi from 2015) who has returned to it's natal nesting territory?
Liberty would tolerate it being there for now, until it gets closer to nesting time and she becomes more territorial. We've seen her run off other sub adults and young eagles from the Nest Tree area over the years!
Check out Sue's photos and see what you think?

The Ground Crew also said there was no interaction or trilling between these 2 eagles, and Liberty is always very vocal with her mate Guardian?

Here are some photos of Guardian from January 2020 so you can compare with the eagle seen on pond perch last week...

Thanks for sharing those cute magpies with us Phil!
They are very interesting birds! I enjoy observing them too!
I finally found an eagle folks!!! I was out of town & missed the sighting of Liberty & Guardian on Pond Perch last week! I have been out there every morning since last Saturday & haven't seen an eagle yet!
The other night I spotted an eagle on Pond Perch at 6:40 pm as we were driving over the 44 Bridge on our way home from the lake.
So tonite I decided to go back down there for a quick spin around 6:00 pm & I finally found an eagle!!!
I was hanging out along the 44 Trail near Pond Perch & all of a sudden at 6:30, Guardian came flying in from the west & landed on the top perching spot on Pond Perch!!!
I couldn't believe it! I was so excited to see him!
There wasn't much light left, but I took a few shots of our handsome boy with my handy point & shoot camera!
Guardian didn't stay long, but when he took off he landed on his favorite Guarding Post lookout spot on the backside of the Turtle Bay Nest! I rode over there to check & sure enough there he was! It was getting dark so I had to get out of there, but it looked like Guardian might be spending the night there! That's a great sign that he is defending the Turtle Bay Nest!!!
And it looks like Guardian does still have some dark feathers on the sides of his eyes! I think it just shows up more in certain lighting!

Beautiful pictures Terri! You also had an eagle at the nest yesterday. Not sure who this is. Was around 9:15 am - 9:30 or so. This eagle chased away the magpies.
