I agree, Pascale. I really did not expect to see Gabby again, so hopefully Jules was okay too and is now on her way to her adult life. Gabby seemed to have very good instincts for a first time Mom. I am hoping for a peaceful season for Gabby and Samson. I wonder sometimes where Romeo went to?

Many of you have been asking about “Iniko,” the baby condor who survived the Dolan Fire. We have been concerned for “Iniko’s” well-being after we observed that “Iniko’s” mother, “Redwood Queen,” was away from the nest for an extended period of time.

Our field biologists hiked to the burned redwood tree to more closely observe “Iniko” and “Redwood Queen.” What they saw was very concerning. “Iniko” did not beg for food from “Redwood Queen.” This is troubling because Condor parents are triggered to feed their chicks by the chick’s begging. Further, “Iniko” was low in energy.

We immediately kicked into gear to assess a possible rescue but the redwood tree where “Iniko” is located was badly damaged by the fire. Climbing experts strongly caution against ascending this tree in its compromised condition. So as difficult as this is, we cannot proceed with a rescue attempt and put human life at risk.

We are comforted that “Redwood Queen” is still trying to care for “Iniko” and that “Iniko” is still standing. Additionally, we are hopeful that condor chick #1030 is likely doing well as its mother, #550, has been repeatedly visiting the nest as determined by her GPS transmitter.

Despite ongoing search efforts, nine condors are still missing and it appears they were lost in the fire. We will continue to search for these condors. However, our hopes are diminishing.

Motsumi is this year eaglet of Roodekrans Black eagles. last year was... well, terrible to watch. in 2020 motsumi which means the hunter is absolutely gorgeous and doing great. these are very fierce eagles...

And just about SE26 (14th of september)

We are still monitoring the situation with SE26 closely.

For those who have missed previous timeline updates or replies to posts on our timeline:, here is a summary.

SE26 has mobility issues, evident since hatch. He has already made significant improvements and has adapted "somewhat" to his situation (how often is 26 second to the dining table?). SE26's development has consistently been about 7-10 days behind SE25 (mobility wise). This also applies to tarsus standing (how they get around for the first 5-6 weeks). Given that SE25 has only started "foot standing/walking" (still wobbling a bit) this past week, we're yet to see how much progress SE26 could make.

Our research license is granted by National Parks & Wildlife with a non-intervention policy, however, as we have done in the past, we can intervene if one of the eaglets falls from the nest. We'd prefer not to speculate on cause or potential outcome(s) while the nesting process has only just passed the halfway mark.

I think it's a shame they didn't intervene weeks ago when it was obvious that se26 had issues, instead of waiting to the point of no return. Intervention on nest now is far more dangerous for both . Non intervention policies suck (my opinion)
I wish se26 the really best (as well to se25) he's such a cute, brave and resilient little one they both are !

I believe they did intervene in one of the first years of the cam when an eaglet had a fish hook in it---but I'm not positive---it was quite a few years ago. Maybe it was before their present grant

After advice from NPWS, we wish to restate that there will be no immediate intervention at the nest. We are watching their positive progress and will review the situation for SE26 if needed when hopefully the stronger eaglet SE25 fledges and leaves the nest.
If either eaglet should fall to the ground now we have permission to intervene for immediate rescue and have procedures in place to take that bird into an approved care facility.

We would like to remind our followers again, that the Research Approval for this project does not allow for any access to the nest itself or any handling of the birds or eggs. The Sea Eagles nest is over 20 metres above the ground in a large ironbark tree, part of the Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest endangered ecological community. There is no access for vehicles and the only way to reach the nest would be to climb the tree with ropes. Unfortunately, this puts the climber, nest and birds at risk. Our priority is ensuring the welfare of both eaglets and in particular, successful fledging for the stronger eaglet, SE25.
While acknowledging that SE26 has a definite mobility issue, we are heartened to see both eaglets feeding well, developing their wings and self-feeding. SE26 has adapted his/her mobility somewhat and is able to stand on the left leg for short periods. For a bird this takes time. This has only been a recent development.
We are monitoring the situation closely and have taken advice from veterinarians with expertise in treating raptors. However diagnosis is not definite without actual physical examination.
When SE25 fledges, we shall discuss with NPWS the possibility for intervention for SE26, if required.
