HWF welcomes you to Season 9 of the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam 2020-2021 staring Harriet and M15.

Our stars M15 and Harriet

Harriet and M15's nest is located 60 feet up in a slash pine in North Fort Myers, Florida in a pasture on the Dick Pritchett property. It is located right in the middle of a fenced horse pasture giving us many views of the beautiful horses, a pond, and other wildlife as well.

Dick Pritchett Real Estate is pleased to continue bringing you this live look into this bald eagle family and their nest located on their property. This season there are 4 cameras that will live stream the eagles 24/7.

Camera #1 is positioned 6 feet above the nest and is carefully attached to the tree so as not to damage it and is equipped with night vision or infrared light, which emits no actual light or noise. The eagles do not see or hear anything coming from the camera.

Camera 2 is located approximately 60 feet from the nest in another tree and has the ability to capture images of the nest action from a distance that are outside the view of cam 1. It is a PTZ cam which means it can be moved to catch the action

In 2015 we added a third camera which gives us great views of the pond area where Harriet takes her wonderful baths as well as a different view of the nest. !

New for 2018 was our 360 degree cam (cam 4). When launched from a button under the cam it allows the user--anybody-- to operate the cam themselves. This cam allows you to click and drag to any viewing area for a fully immersive experience. AMAZING!!

All of our cameras are environmentally friendly, non-intrusive and positioned to offer a good view of the nest and eagles while preserving the beauty of the nest and its' surroundings. These 4 cameras will capture every moment at the nest, 24/7, and stream it live .

Our beautiful pair yodeling a love song :rh:

Our beautiful 2020 family---plus Stuffy! Stuffy was a stuffed dog toy, a chipmunk that we all called a squirrel that Harriet brought to the nest. It was great c ompany for the eaglets all season. Unfortunately Stuffy later got mowed over after falling from the tree.

SOME HISTORY ABOUT THIS NEST AND OUR EAGLES ---

Our first ever family on the cam---Ozzie, E2, E1, and Harriet  (2013)
SWF 1st family 2013.jpg
From a video (year 1) by ncaerie

Our thanks to the Pritchett family for installing, maintaining and running these cams on your property. This is a family owned and run business. The cam and nest are located 60 feet up in a slash pine in a horse pasture on the Pritchett property. The first cam was installed in early September, 2012.

A mature pair of bald eagles, Ozzie & Harriet, had been coming to this nest since they built it for the 2006-2007 season until Ozzie's untimely death in September of 2015. Before building this nest in 2006, the pair had a nest on the opposite side of Bayshore Road, across the street. The old nest tree was deliberately killed by someone to get rid of the eagles nest in order to remove the tree. We are really not sure IF or for how long Ozzie and Harriet occupied the old nest. The nest on the Pritchett property is now occupied by Harriet and her present mate, M15.

There is now a subdivision called Eagle's Landing going up at Yonder Pond in the near vicinity of the "old nest"

HISTORY SINCE THE CAM HAS BEEN IN THE PASTURE TREE --

Two eggs were laid November 26 & 29 in 2012 -- Both chicks, Hope and Honor ( E1 and E2 ), fledged successfully.

E2 in front--E1 lounging and couinting cars :) Our cams have improved greatly!

Two eggs were laid Nov. 17 & 20 in 2013.
Only one eaglet, E4, fledged successfully E3 sadly passed away on Feb. 2 at 41 days old of unknown causes but most likely a respiratory problem.

Two eggs were laid on November 19 & 22 in 2014
Just one of the eaglets, E6, fledged. We lost E5 on Jan 20, 2015 at due to unknown causes.

Two eggs were laid on December 19 & 22 in 2015
Both eaglets fledged but shortly after were attacked by an owl. The younger one, E8, was lost for a week and found by three folks from CROW. E8 was transported to CROW where he received intense treatment and rehab. E8 was finally released into the nest area on August 18, 2016.

Two eggs were laid in November of 2016
Egg #1 (Eggbert) was unviable and never hatched. E9 hatched, was the apple of everybody's eye, and successfully fledged

Two eggs were laid in November of 2017
Both eggs hatched and our beloved E10 and E11 successfully fledged.

Two eggs were once again laid in November of 2018
Both eggs hatched and wonderful E12 ans E13 fledged successfully.

Two eggs were once again laid in November of 2019 (clutch #1). Only one egg containing our precious E14 hatched. Unfortunately we lost E14 to a combination of rodenticide and a terrible accident when one of his---yes he was a boy---blood feathers broke and he bled to death :cry1:

To out surprise we had a second clutch of eggs laid in February of 2020!! Our miracle eaglets E15 and E15 hatched and successfully fledged! E15 hung around the nest for a record 169 days before leaving on it's adventure! What a season!!

SOME HISTORY OF THE OLD NEST (across the street from the Pritchett property)---

The pine tree previously used by perhaps two different nesting pairs of Bald Eagles for more than a decade died. An unknown individual knocked off the bark in a ring around the tree which severs the roots from the needles and starves the tree. The county had monitored the nest since 1990 and recorded 23 eaglets, confirmed fledglings.

History of the Old nest in the "killed tree". We DO NOT believe these eagles were Ozzie and Harriet. While CROW told us that Ozzie was a very old eagle, Harriet could not possibly be this old. She would have to be well into her mid thirties or more :w00t: I just think the history of this other nest is interesting!

Below is a picture showing the locations of the nest and nearby locations----
SWF nest tree map.jpg

As you can see above in the lower picture, there is a large river close to the nest, (about a half a mile away - as a bird flies) that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. It is called the Caloosahatchee River, This is a prime source of food for this nest.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there are 128 nests in a 25 mile radius of Ozzie and Harriet's nest. The closet nest is about one mile away, although it was last known active for the 2009 season.

This is the ninth season Dick Pritchett Real Estate has provided the live look into Harriet & Ozzie’s (now M15's) Southwest Florida nest. We now have three HD-PTZ cameras that film the birds 24/7 and stream live video directly to this site. Camera #1 is positioned six feet above the nesting tree and is equipped with night vision or infrared light, which emits no actual light. Nor does it make any noise. The birds do not see or hear anything coming from the camera. Camera #2 is located approximately 100 feet from the nest and has the ability to capture images of the nest action outside of Camera #1. Cam #3 is located down at the pond which is on the property where the eagles tend to spend a lot of time. New for the 2017/18 season was a 360 degree camera also in the nest tree. It can be launched and operated by viewers of the cam!! All of our cameras are environmentally friendly, non-intrusive and positioned to offer the best vi
ew of the nest and birds while preserving the pristine beauty of the nest and their surroundings.

Aside from losing three of our eaglets and and 2 eggs, we have had our share of other happenings at this nest. ---

In 2015 ~~~ has it really been 5 years since we lost this handsome eagle?

OZZIE!! ~~ What can we say about Ozzie? We lost the handsome, smart, wonderful 1st Dad of our nest on September 29th, 2015. S0 sad!!! All of us who watch this nest and love this family will always miss this wonderful, intelligent, entertaining eagle!

*******************************************************************************************

In 2016 ~~~

Perhaps the most important of all of the dramatic happenings at this nest in 2016 was the complete and total loss of the nest probably due to weather, old age, and leaping eaglets. Fortunately for those of us who watch this nest Harriet and M15 chose to rebuild their nest right in the same tree and the same spot--what a relief!!

Here is a look at the nest before and after the collapse

2017 ~~~

We had our own catastrophe just before the start of our new season. In the very late summer of 2017 on September,11trh, hurricane Irma, hit a good part of Florida including our nest area in North Ft. Myers. We had an overflowing pond, a large tree in the pasture was uprooted and although our nest stayed right where Harriet and /M15 built it the nest tree itself sustained quite a bit of damage. Believe it or not even out snag trees stayed standing!!! :w00t: We waited patiently to see if out pair of eagles had safely weathered the hurricane. We were rewarded a few days later when they showed up safe and sound!!

****************************************************************************************

2020 ---

This year we had a very sad tragedy. Out precious E14 passed away at the age of 27 days. He somehow broke a blood feather and we found our that he was full of rodenticide from a rat that he had eaten. Since that prevents blood from clotting our baby bled to death.

Two movies for the start of Season 9!! H&M At Home & Cam Maintenance

TODAY'S 1st :vid: VIDEO: https://youtu.be/LQ3vGPcKVFU

A Quiet Sunrise For H & M.. No Nest Work & Early Departure 09-18-20

Harriet & M15 perched together on the high perch of the nest tree, vocalizing to each other and anyone else in audio range. No nest work but much watchfulness for any other eagles passing by. This is the time of year single adult and new mated pairs are searching for territory of their own.M15 followed Harriet to the NW shortly before 8 am... perhaps for breakfast for two. E15 was not seen.

TODAY'S 2nd :vid: VIDEO: https://youtu.be/2iN5VrzfLis

Cam Maintenance For Season 9 09-18-20

Cam maintenance was performed for Season 9 today. The IR light was replaced, lens cleaned, all possible areas caulked, nest measured at 60x42, but I think the nest is really bigger than that, nest checked for line & hooks (none found). Stuffy was found in pieces on the ground, a victim of the mowers. Stuffy will always be remembered fondly by all of us.

Team H&M Play Defense This Morning 09-21-20

Harriet & M15 were in defend and protect mode before sunrise this am. Harriet followed M15 across the road to the snags behind the shopping center as the neighbor eagles landed on the cell tower over there. Both pairs vocalized to each other as they do each nesting season, discussing the invisible territory line. Eagle pairs are nesting closer to one another now than they did years ago as the FL bald eagle population continues to increase. There are an estimated 1,500 pairs of breeding eagles in Florida. That's No. 2 in the nation, behind only Alaska.
A recent report released by Florida Audubon, called Eagle Watch, says eaglets here are doing well based on sheer numbers but that they're losing natural nesting habitat. "More and more are nesting in developed areas, and some eagles are nesting quite close to each other."

E15 Is Back!! M15 Provides For All ~ Breakfast For E15 & Attempt To Rebuild Nest 09-24-20

E15 returned to the nest tree last evening and was still there, perched on the veranda branch, vocalizing away when I arrived this morning. Harriet, on the attic branch, and M15, in a snag in the west pasture, showed tolerance for E15's presence and watched their territory before flying off to the SW chasing a bird flying too close to the nest area. E15 flew too, but went south to perch in the pine by yonder pond. E15 watched alertly for a chance to "grab" breakfast. E15 got that chance as h/she saw Harriet fly back to the nest and M15 approaching in the distance with prey. E15 beat M15 to the nest and claimed the prey. Harriet flew to the attic and M15 flew to the pond. Harriet flew off again to check out another bird flying in the area. M15 walked up the bank, looking for a stick, grabbed one and returned to the nest, only to find E15 flapping her wings at him and covering her food. M15 attempted to place the stick but E15 went after him, so M flew up above the nest. M15 showed what a great provider he is this morning bringing his Season 8 offspring food and trying to continue rebuilding the nest for his Season 9 offspring-to-be. How long E15 will stay, we do not know. And we just keep learning about the eagle way of life from this amazing family.

E15 Stays Home Hoping For A Food Drop ~ H & M "Meet Up" & Fly Together 09-28-20

E15 is 181 days old today and remains in the nest area. E15 is smart and healthy. Although this a first at this nest for a juvenile to remain this long, it does happen. E15 has found an adequate food source here so feels no need to leave just yet. E15 is capable of finding food, and most likely has been doing that, other than what M15 still provides. The adults continue to tolerate her/him, leaving the area the majority of the day to encourage more independence. E15 watched the area this morning from the nest tree. Since hatch, juveniles are imprinted realizing that a nest=food. E15 does not want to take over the nest, only to get food from the nest. We saw a beautiful flight by H & M as they flew by the nest area, ignoring E15 and strengthening their bond to one another. Enjoy this extra time we are getting with E15... remember we have a NWZ (no worry zone) here.

Here are two new videos from Lady Hawk----Thank you!! :vid:

SWFL Eagles ~ Harriet In Hot Pursuit Follows M15 With A Fish! But E15 Is Quick & Gets It! 9.29.20

From Lady Hawk---

E15 spent the morning in the nest tree and sees something and vocalizes and drops to the attic and then up to the trunk extension where we hear some noise & banging around the camera. E15 may have seen an intruder up there but without cam 2 I am just guessing. E15 comes down & squees her way to the veranda. lol E15 makes it back to the attic, then outer attic where she dries her wings and then flies off south/southwest.

Later in the afternoon, M15 can be seen on the lower left of the screen beginning at 3:17 flying in with a nice fish in his talons. Harriet was in the tree by the church and sees him and immediately follows in hot pursuit thinking she is finally going to get one of his deliveries! But E15 sees Dad with the fish and drops down to the nest and claims the fish before Mom could get it! Harriet vocalizes her disappointment no doubt! Harriet will fly off and M will fly to the attic and then head to the pond.

About an hour and a half later, M returns to the lower limb and then over to the outer attic and E15 will fly up to the attic squeeing and mantling. She makes her way over to Dad who will immediately depart for the night leaving the Princess to her roosting spot. At 11:14 as it was getting dark it looked like a juvie or eagle can be seen flying to the left past the church as E15 watches. Thank you for watching!

SWFL Eagles ~ A Juvie Visitor Flies In & Spends The Night With E15! Who Is It? 9.29.20

From Lady Hawk---

E15 was sleeping on the attic when a juvie flies in and lands on the outer branch of the nest tree. E15 did not make any sound and was not disturbed by this visitor at all. I believe Harriet & possibly M15 are on the treetop perch tonight. The visitor will come down the branch and look towards the church and then head back up the branch. Is this E16 returning to the nest? We will find out in the morning who this it! No doubt this is another chapter in the As the Nest Turns!! Thank you for watching!

Lady Hawk, thanks for the vids. I reckon we were pondering alike about the night visitor. It doesn't seem that daylight resolved the matter, however now with one or both adults having perched on the outer branch and gazed off to the north, I can't help but think perhaps they are wondering where their "youngin' has gone this time. Even E15 seems urgent to tell something. :)

:ty: Mary F. for opening the Season 9 Forum. Appreciate the time and dedication you have given. Thank you for the history and information. All we have to do is check page 1 if there are any questions or if you forget like my aging mind.
:ty: Journi for your continued dedication also in keeping this forum the great place to document our nest and our eagle family. Looking forward to a special season 9.

Question: Do we have an updated donation button for season 9 yet? I would like to sponsor our nest this year.

I am going to take a guess at some earlier events today. :)
12:52:43 I started hearing vocals, E15 and Harriet, at 12:52. There were some snippets of wings in. Here is the first eagle leaving.

I don’t know what happened, but guessing, a delivery, grab & go? It’s a mystery. :chin:
