My apologies for being so bad at not posting recently but I have still been following and photographing Ma and Pa. It has been pretty quiet as everything gears up for the breeding season but this week I had some really big news ...... Ma and Pa seem to have a new nest !!!!

A few days ago I heard a lot of noise coming from a tree quite a distance from the usual nest and could see 2 adults in what looked like a clump of sticks. I took some pics and when I zoomed in it most definitely looked like a nest! Then today I saw an adult flying into this new location with a long stick and again when I zoomed in 2 adults were in the new nest.

So my guesses are that as Ma and Pa had no success last season they thought a fresh start might help. Or perhaps this is a new Ma and Pa and they wanted something a bit smaller and easier to keep clean. :) The old nest is till there but does perhaps look a little bedraggled - maybe it collapsed in the last big windstorm and was just to tricky to repair. I will see if I can get over there to get a better look at it

This nest is quite a bit closer and a bit lower than the usual nest and even though it is obscured by branches I might be able to get better pics. Only time will tell!

UPDATE: Looking back at my observations from Jan 2020 there is already a nest in this new tree. It might have still been under construction but its definitely a large clump of sticks! :)

Exciting times! :woohoo:

I just read this update Heather. Very interesting. You mentioned what could have been a territorial type dispute Jan 15. I will add another scenario in that another female may have taken over from Ma. According to David the male chooses the territory, the female chooses the nest and may not want to settle into another female's nest. It will be interesting to follow!

Fund Drive for Hard Drives

Good afternoon, everyone! I have just learned that we do not have the hard drives we need to record our cams as we approach little chick time - and we do not have the funds necessary to buy them.

These are the high resolution drives that are connected directly to the cams at the site, making it possible to record high quality videos of events at the nests - and we usually have them up and running before the eggs are laid. As you know, we already have eggs at three of our four nests, and they are likely any day now at the fourth nest - so time is of the essence.

Our tech person Ken is estimating that it will cost about $7000 to buy the high quality, high capacity drives needed for our 9 cams, and while we are keeping up with our regular monthly expenses, we don't have the extra money needed to buy and install the hard drives.

I know this is a hard time financially for many of us, with many businesses closed - but it may also be a time when some of us are staying home and watching the eagles after cancelling planned trips or dinners out - and I'd like to ask those who can to contribute towards these hard drives.

With the nest in a different tree we now seem to be on one of the flight paths into the nest. The eagles quite often fly right over our house to get to the nest. Hopefully once they start feeding eaglets they don't accidentally drop something :D

On Mar 24 I'm not exactly sure what was happening but it seemed as though Pa was chasing off another adult that got too close

On Mar 24 a flyby from I think Ma Ma with what looked like a full crop. I was interested to see her unusual talon. This looks really similar to the talon I noted in this post from last season viewtopic.php?p=183611#p183611
Though in that post I thought it might be Pa :)

On April 1 one of the adults obviously had an itch that wouldn't wait. :D It just shows how totally comfortable they are in the air. Just a total no-brainer to be scratching behind your ear while you are flying 100m above the ground

On April 5, 2 juveniles came to visit and I think Pa spent some time flying around with them enjoying the warm thermals

Also on Apr 5 a really low flyover as I happened to be standing outside with a great view of that unusual talon

On May 2, a juvenile visited just before sunset. Then at sunset Pa perched watching over the nest while Ma fed the eaglets below! Such a beautiful scene :)

Wow Heather, you got some incredible shots! Proof your Ma from last year is back, proof that eagles can scratch an itch while flying! I think DH should see that. Want me to let him know you posted photos of that or would you like to? Great shots of landing gear. How special they all are.
Now hoping the eaglets choose to look out on the visible side of the nest! At least it is a feeding side. :luck:
Can't tell if one of those juvies is Miller. :dunno:
