Good morning, everyone - and thanks for catching whatever happened in the middle of the night, Bev! I know mice have occasionally ventured onto nests at night - but the calling makes me wonder if there was an owl nearby. Glad that Res was on the job, and that whatever it was, it was smart enough not to mess with Res!

6:37 am
It's getting light, and Res is awake and looking around.

This is one of the times when it's useful to have several ID clues visible - the neckline with feathers showing down below and a gap in the center looks more like Sur than Res, but the first picture below shows the white feathers under the right eye that only Res has, and the second shows the more even tail that is usually an indicator of Res. I'm guessing that once she has a chance to have a good shake, the white feathers below the neckline will disappear.

Thanks, Bev!

I'm pretty sure this was a switch to Sur; Res left a few seconds before the first picture.

I was just getting ready to post that Sur was still there, having checked the dvr for a switch, and had a fairly good look at his right eye - when he got up and flew off.

I'm pretty sure this is Res who came in to take over, in spite of the ragged neckline. The tail looks right, as does what I can see of the right eye.

Definitely Res - beautiful if a bit disheveled.

1:10 pm Checked back to JudyB's last post and saw no changes - in fact I didn't even see Res get up for an egg roll, she hasn't budged from keeping those eggs dry!

And of course I no sooner said that than she got up and rolled the eggs!

There was a switch from Sur to Res at 5:20 pm - so now I need to find out when Sur arrived. Back in a minute....

From the dvr...

3:52 pm
Res up and calling, and off she goes.

And here is Sur at 3:54 pm.

Fund Drive for Hard Drives

Good afternoon, everyone! I have just learned that we do not have the hard drives we need to record our cams as we approach little chick time - and we do not have the funds necessary to buy them.

These are the high resolution drives that are connected directly to the cams at the site, making it possible to record high quality videos of events at the nests - and we usually have them up and running before the eggs are laid. As you know, we already have eggs at three of our four nests, and they are likely any day now at the fourth nest - so time is of the essence.

Our tech person Ken is estimating that it will cost about $7000 to buy the high quality, high capacity drives needed for our 9 cams, and while we are keeping up with our regular monthly expenses, we don't have the extra money needed to buy and install the hard drives.

I know this is a hard time financially for many of us, with many businesses closed - but it may also be a time when some of us are staying home and watching the eagles after cancelling planned trips or dinners out - and I'd like to ask those who can to contribute towards these hard drives.

Good afternoon, everyone!

Today is day 30 for the first egg and day 27 for egg #2 - which means that we are probably about a week away from a hatch. Eagle eggs normally hatch in 35-40 days. As I understand it, if the eagles incubated constantly like an incubator would do, most eggs would hatch on day 35 - but our parents (like many eagle pairs) only incubated part of the time while waiting for the second egg, so the first egg will take a little longer and the two eggs will probably hatch closer together than the three days apart they were laid. Also, the eggs cool down a bit while they are being turned and while the parents are changing places - all natural and normal - and making it impossible to know exactly when we might have a hatch.

That said, last year the first egg at Surrey Reserve hatched on day 38 - and day 38 for this year's first egg will be Sunday, April 5. We'll start paying closer attention to the eggs on April 2nd when the first one is 35 days old, and with a bit of luck we'll see the first little pip a day or two later.

Now for a review of the dvr....

From the dvr....

Change from Res to Sur at 8:07 am; eggs were uncovered briefly.
20200328_001.jpg

10:29 am
Sur was up briefly to take care of some personal business.
20200328_002.jpg

11:11 am
Res arrived to take over - she's standing on the right as Sur gets off the eggs.
20200328_003.jpg

It is now 12:45 pm, and it's windy and may still be raining - and Res us still on duty; she just got up to turn the eggs and rearrange herself a bit, and is now settling back in.

2:47 pm
Checking the dvr....

1:50 pm
Res looked around, then got up and flew off; still windy, but it looks as if the rain had stopped.
20200328_004.jpg

1:52 pm
Someone arrived - I think Sur. And he did some calling (not a good picture, but I'm pretty sure it's him).
20200328_005.jpg

2:56 pm - it's still Sur; I logged in briefly for a look at his eye because it's hard to tell with the cam rocking.

3:36 pm
Res just arrived - as I was watching!
20200328_007.jpg

I think she's eating something at the edge of the nest - not sure if it's something she brought, or something left from an earlier meal. Sur is getting ready to leave.
20200328_008.jpg

3:39 pm
Res is on nest duty, and Sur has flown off.
