I had sent a message to CROW to see if I could get an update on the 2nd eaglet and they just got back to me and unfortunately it is bad news, our 2nd eaglet did not make it. Here is their response:

Hi Sue. Unfortunately, the eaglet had very severe injuries to its wing that were not repairable and our veterinarians had to make the decision to humanely euthanize the eagle. I am sorry I do not have a better update for you!

I am going to go back to the nest in the next couple of days to see if the adults are still around, which I would expect they will be. I’m sure this pair is wondering what happened and will be around to mourn their loss.

Soar high young ones. I will miss seeing you grow into the great fledglings you would have become. :brknhrt: :cry1: 🦅
Hi Sue, Judy, Sandy, Bev,
only the fact to read the so sad story of these two eaglets lets come my :cry1:
Poor little guys, like you said they already joined E14 and the little DH9.
Fly free, fly high with always a full crop, you were not so far to embrace this beautiful sky with your superb wings :brknhrt:
I hope the human will be able to find very quickly a new technique for these lightnings rods. I share your sadness.
I will add these two eaglets in the "in memoriam" thread in the next day.
i will use your pics Sue and will name them CSN1 & CSN2 if it's not a problem for you. Let me know if you sent them another name.
:grhug:
Thank you so much Philippe! I had not named the eaglets but love that you have given them appropriate names, and going forward in the next years will use the same naming convention. Thank you for adding them to the "in memoriam" thread.

Hi Sue and everyone that has been watching this nest and following Sue’s posts. I am so sorry to hear about the tragic end of these 2 eaglets; Nature at it’s worst with human intervention by adding that lightning rod. I’m sure it has to be on the tower but hopefully some adaptation can be made. I hope Mom and Dad come back soon and you get to see them Sue. :grhug:

Merci Sue for the photos and also the video i put them on the "in Memoriam" thread where both CSN1 and CSN2 joined our beloved missing ones.

On your photo (01-03) i noticed "viewtopic.php?p=291917#p291917" that i'm pretty sure one eaglet had already a problem with this lightning rod. It wasn't harm at this time but if you watch well on the second and third pic, the left wing is already marked as there was a contact before…

Thanks Philippe, I had noticed that at the time that I had posted it but didn't think too much into it at the time. Great observation! I will probably pass this on to the person I report to so that he is aware that this eaglet may have been injured prior to the last one which was fatal.

3/28/2020 - We went to check on the nest yesterday (Saturday) and found an Osprey at the nest.....he flew off shortly after we got there but I didn't see him leave as I was watching a vulture and another Osprey flying around....soon this one that was on the nest joined them as they flew around. I did not see the adult eagles in the area.

Good afternoon!

2:30 pm - rainy day in Cape Coral....so what to do but head out and take a look around to see if there are any eagles around. Was surprised to see someone on this light post at the school football field. Kind of far away and I didn’t have my camera with the zoom lens. These pictures are from my iPhone. I couldn’t tell for sure if it was an Eagle but seemed to be the right shape and size. Hopeful that this pair is still together but am really hoping they go back to the tower they called home a couple years ago as it may be safer for eaglets there.

Thanks Judy for the well wishes for this pair.....unfortunately it seems that this pair decided to stay at their current nest at the school football field.

11/15/2020 - had been to the nest almost every Sunday since my last post and had not seen the eagles at their nest. Thought I had seen one a few weeks ago as I was just bringing up my binoculars and something/someone passed in front of me...was quick and I didn't see them after that. But yesterday we were lucky to see who I think was the female on the nest....in a position that looked very similar to what I have seen in the past when a female is laying an egg.....standing...wings out slightly and making some noises.....then after a bit, she put her head down as if to check to be sure things were okay down there....some pictures of who I think is the female on the nest.

11/15/2020 continued......and quite a few minutes later...maybe about 15 minutes....the male comes in with a stick.....and once he was on the nest he seemed to be checking things out as well....the female did not move from her position. We stayed only for another 5 or 10 minutes and both remained on the nest.

So I will mark this day as a possible egg laying day.

Yes it is Philippe....unfortunately this nest is at a middle school football field and this pair just began using this light post 2 years ago for their nest. Previously they were at a tower down around the corner but for some reason 2 years ago decided this was a better spot. Due to the likelihood of lightning in the area this lightning rod must be a necessity. Although I would have to disagree because there should be restrictions on kids being on the field when there is lightning within a certain number of miles from the area so this shouldn’t be something they should be relying on. Just my opinion though.

It is not there to protect the children, only there to protect the light system as the spots are placed at a high point in the area
and ... to save money...
Today it seems it's too late to do something (if an egg is already there) but may be for the next season. May be it's tilme to sent the link of this thread to the Caloosa school and also the one from last year too. :luck:

Hi Philippe! Sorry I am just now getting back here to respond.....yes, I wonder if the school people have been told about what happened last year. I'm not sure it is my place to go to them but will send a note with my next report to the person from the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife that I report to and see if they know if the school personal were informed of this.
