Hanover, PA Eagle cam 2020 + 2021

Post by photofun » Sat Dec 28, 2019 10:34 am

Welcome to the Hanover Bald Eagle cam in Codorus State Park Hanover in York County Pennsylvania. The eagles names are Freedom (male) and Liberty (Female)
Helpful ID guides below to tell them apart. This is the sixth season of nesting with the cams installed. Thanks to HDonTap for taking over the nest and setting up new cams to allow us to continue watching this nest.

Link to the 2021 Nesting Season

Back on October 26, 2018 it was reported in the Evening Sun (https://www.eveningsun.com/story/news/2 ... 761778002/) the following: The Pennsylvania Game Commission is no longer overseeing the Hanover bald eagle cam that has monitored a pair of eagles — viewers have nicknamed them "Freedom" and "Liberty" — that live in Codorus State Park.

The commission held the permit to the livestream, so if another group wants to continue the livestream it would have to apply for a permit, said Travis Lau, the director of communications at the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

There are a few reasons that the PGC is discontinuing involvement with the eagle cam, according to Lau:

The tree that the nest is in has a crack. The nest has also cracked. So there is no telling the future of either.
The location of the tree and nest make it difficult to get access to the camera for maintenance.
The commission is short staffed and it takes resources to be educators about what goes on in the feed.

The nest was supported and new cams were installed with new views this season. The two views link are below. One of the cams is a PTZ cam also which will be nice! IR on both cams as well, what a treat!

2019-2020 is the sixth season of this nest cam. This pair of bald eagles has made its home in Codorus State Park, just outside Hanover, in rural York County, Pennsylvania. They got their names through a contest where local people voted on names. Mom is Liberty and Dad is Freedom. They have been nesting in this tree for about 15 yrs now but there is not a lot of history on the nest before the camera was installed and started broadcasting in 2015. The nest is 75' up in an oak tree.

History of the nest starting 2015

Watching the eagles is fun but sometimes it is hard to tell which one is which. Obviously the one that lays the egg is the female but after that it get hard to tell. Here are a few indicators to help you identify them. Even then it sometimes is hard. Females generally brood the eggs and eaglets over night. Our nest here is no different.

Dad or Freedom has a notch in his neck line, can be seen most of the time but not always. He also has a lighter colored bib area on his chest. His wing tips or the primaries are shorter then Mom's and when crossed on the back do not extend to the tail. The last two seasons he had a notch in the middle of his tail feathers and when on the nest his tail width is wider then moms

Mom or Liberty is larger as most females are. Her neckline can look straight but it has a little rise in the middle an inverted U. Her wing tips almost touch the end of her tail and she doesn't always cross them. When she is on the nest her tail feathers compact thinner then dad's, sometimes she tucks her wing tips under the tail.

Enjoy the cams and this forum, please be kind and please help yourself to posting pics and updates when you see them. This is a great place to share our love of the Hanover eagles! With this new view we can actually see the lake below on the right and at this moment both eagles are perched in a tree that we never saw them before. This new cam is nice!
