I've been trying to catch up on what's been happening on some of the nests that don't have recent posts, and I found an article (https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2019/03/ ... lies-coop/) from March 27 which said that the long-time female disappeared around March 20, perhaps because of competition from other eagles; it didn't say, but I believe the male some observers were calling Bill left at the same time. There was a raccoon visiting the nest fairly regularly, or so it seemed - and that may have encouraged the resident pair to look for a safer spot to lay their eggs. There are local photographers who follow these eagles, so if they have a new nest, it may be discovered eventually.

The article said that a new pair took over the nest almost immediately, and I think from the posts on Facebook that they are still being seen at the nest - but I don't think they've laid any eggs, and it's getting pretty late for that, although the MN DNR says eggs are possible well into May.

If anyone knows more about the events here, please post. Thanks!

MN DNR Twin Cities: Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota Metro Area - The New Pair
Seventh season

November 13, 2019

The "New" Pair has taken up a comfortable residency at our EagleCam nest. They have stayed around the nest area all summer, adding and rearranging sticks on a frequent basis and sharing meals together. They seem to always be together. Almost always, when one bird shows up, the second is not far behind.

The current pair has been distinguished from the pair, or at least the resident female, by several physical features. One obvious feature is that neither of the new birds is banded. This pair also shows some behavioral differences as well. They seem very bonded to each other, spending most of their time together - showing fondness for each other and sharing food commonly.

Thank you, Ferenz, for starting the 2019-2020 nesting season here, and for the great pictures of the new pair who are settling in here.

Here's hoping that they have a good season!

In spite of their fairly northern location in the US, this has often been an early nest - and even though we have a new pair this year, they are sticking with that tradition - the new female laid what might be her first egg ever at 3:47 pm local time!

I'm getting very good at just missing eggs being laid this year - they're reporting on Facebook that her second egg was laid at 12:11 pm today.

Not easy to see in this image from 12:21 pm, but Mom is rolling two eggs before settling back down.

We have a third egg! It was laid at about 2:43 pm, and I haven't seen it yet, but watching her turn the eggs, it seemed as if there were indeed more than two there.

:vid: Three Eggs! (30 seconds)

This is the first year for this pair at the nest, and from her coloring we suspect she may be a young female nesting for the first time - so I'm quite surprised to see her lay three eggs.
