Harrison Mills Observation and Discussion thread 2017..2018

Post by IrishEyes » Sat Feb 10, 2018 2:30 pm

Welcome Everyone!

The Harrison Mills Bald Eagle Nest discussion forum is unique among the family of HWF nest cams in that it is the only nest where we can see the eagles arriving on the Chehalis Flats following the salmon back from the salmon runs up north on their back to their nests and territories sometime in late September into October .

THe Honeycombs and all the eagles from this area head north towards northern BC and Alaska ... they will stay around the coast and rivers where salmon starts to spawn..... as soon as the spawning occurs father south the eagles will follow those fish so they can feed of them............ the eagles will arrive back here at Harrison Mills..sometime around late September into October.......

The Harrison Mills area where the Honeycombs nest..... is noted for its abundance of spawning fish from late October into December........ and what is so breathtaking is that thousands of eagles from all over have been seen during this time...and they usually stay around until the fish are gone ,they will then move on to their own territories and nesting areas.

Weather Report

The Harrison Mills bald eagle nest is 175 feet up a huge Douglas fir - on the 10th green of the Sandpiper Golf Course at and the folks at Pretty Estates have named the adults Mr. and Mrs. Honeycomb, in the Penthouse Nest.

For David Hancock's history of the Harrison Mills nest read his lengthy article. I suggest printing it to read at your leisure: http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/vi ... 875#575875

2017 had its ups and downs on this nest ... The Honeycombs were tormented by intruders from day the first egg was laid .. Mom laid two eggs and both hatched.....Mom and Dad took turns incubating the eggs and brooding and feeding the chicks.. Food was scare at times but both chicks grew and developed then sadly Dad disappeared when the chicks were close to 7 weeks old and Mom was left to raise two growing chicks on her own ..... which she did with some help from the fish fairy and both chicks fledged successfully ... You can read all about 2016-2017..HERE

Please check here for all other additional information about this nest

Summaries of the Nesting Seasons

2013 was the first year we watched this nest, and while there were some occasional eagle visits, Mr. and Mrs. Honeycomb didn't arrive until mid March (see here for a possible reason). They promptly set to work, fixed up the nest, and laid two eggs four days apart, both of which hatched four days apart. Both Birdie and Bogey did well for a couple of weeks, though little Bogey was always visibly smaller, but then Birdie started a major growth spurt and there were a few days with less food - which meant that there was none left for the now much smaller chick; little Bogey died when he/she was 23 days old. Birdie thrived, and fledged successfully. He was seen flying down near the river - and did return to the nest for a couple of quick visits before heading off to see the world. You can read all about the 2013 nesting season here - Harrison Mills 2013 Observations and Discussion .

The 2014 nesting season was different - you can read all about the 2014 nesting season here - Harrison Mills 2014 Observations and Discussion. Mrs. Honeycomb only laid one egg, and though both parents incubated it diligently, it didn't hatch. We were all a bit heartbroken - but do know this may also be part of the natural way of things. IrishEyes put together a great summary of the 2014 nesting season - Part 1 and Part 2

The 2015 nesting season was wonderful..Mom Honeycomb laid two eggs and both hatched...... they were named Driver and Putter....The Honeycombs knew the area better and there was no shortage of food.....both chicks fledged successfully.....
You can read all about the 2015 nesting season here Harrison Mills 2015 nest season

2016 was another great season ~~ Mom laid two eggs again and both hatched,, they were named Sandy and Piper ..sadly Piper passed away at 3 days old and to Quote Judy B
There was no aggression any of us saw, he got to look around and see the world for a few days, and have a bit of fish, and is spending his final time curled up with Sandy and snuggled by Mom. I wish he didn't have to leave so soon - but if he must, this is not a bad way to go. :elove::brknhrt:
Sandy Fledged successfully.

For inf. purposes ........Mom Honeycomb will be 23 years old this year .....
Closing remarks from David Hancock:

So now we have more details -- Chapter 2 of hopefully many! Our big lady was banded in June, 2001 as a full adult and released after she had completed about 2 months of rehabilitation following collision with a car. So this bird was now a minimum 17 years old when she came to the Harrison Mills nest. She had survived a battle with a vehicle but been found by people who cared. Then again, if my suspicions are correct, she is the female from the Morris Valley nest, she has had another run-in with humans -- this time with disturbing chain saws, consecutive work crews and helicopters -- and again survived. No wonder our eagles have been increasing. Once we changed our attitude and considered predators good icons, essential indicators of how healthy an ecosystem is, they rebounded with the very virility our Harrison Mills pair was continuing to show.

How to tell Who is Who
Mrs Honeycomb has a band on her right leg, and appears to have a feather missing on the right side of her tail; it may have broken - sometimes it looks as if I can see the top part of it.

Mrs Honeycomb was banded by O.W.L. as a full adult in the spring of 2001 - so she will be at least 21 years old in spring 2016; you can read the rest of her story from David Hancock here - A Good Eagle Story.

Welcome our current Dad .. Notice the dark feathers under his eyes ...

Hello Bev, Gail and everyone! :)

I, too, thought I'd check out the new forum [by trying to post lol]

Nice look and thank-you for all the work you have done creating the introductory page, Bev - a big job and it looks great!
:ty:

Dad's perch at the river view..

EEK! Not sure I did that correctly...don't think I should be seeing a banner with attachment across the top of the scap!!

Well - it looks like Gail's!! Did you trim yours to get rid of that white banner? I wonder why when I put in the little added comment about the attachment, it appeared before the scap and not after it?

Any hints?? :%:

I have no idea why the attachments are showing the term "attachment" as well as the large white border with (in my case) dots on the edge! I guess we need to try another scap and see what the choices are when we do it...I must have missed something. :D

I think I got the scap to post correctly by clicking on the "post Inline " tab right before you submit.

I did try another attachment from a scap I got on the N embedded when I expanded the screen to full-screen.

However, I got a message 'file too large'. When I clicked on the back one page arrow to go back to my post, it had disappeared and I had to start again.

Tried that twice. Hmmm..some learning to do here! LOL

ADD: I tried it again with a scap from the SPTZ [full screen] - same message 'file too large'. I wonder how I managed to attach a scap in my first post...will mull that over.

One more try - [not expanded to full screen and cropped]. Thanks, Gail - found the inline tab.
