Giant Pandas at the Memphis Zoo

Le Le (Luh Luh) Meaning "Happy Happy" male born July 18, 1998
at Chongquing Zoo In Chongquing, China
Ya Ya "Beautiful Little Girl" female born August 3, 2000
at Beijing Zoo in Beijing, China
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About our Pandas
"Ya Ya" (female) & "Le Le" (male), two giant pandas were special passengers on a 2003 FedEx Express flight from Beijing to Memphis, where they arrived at their new home at the Memphis Zoo.
This pair came to the Zoo as part of a long-term lease with China in 2003. In 2013, that lease was renewed for another ten years. While Ya Ya has not yet produced a panda cub, the Zoo has made strides in panda reproduction studies, even an ability to predict a pregnant panda’s due date with excellent accuracy.
The zoo in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of four zoos in the USA that has Giant Pandas. Their research program is focused on nutrition. Collaborating scientists are studying which species of bamboo the bears prefer, what times of year they eat them, how best to serve up that bamboo in captivity, how much energy they get from the bamboo, and how panda foraging behavior can affect the growth of wild bamboo.
Ya Ya 13th & 16th B'Days
She was hand raised as opposed to being raised by her mother. Ya Ya is considered by her keepers to be a regular ham, loves attention and is very vocal in expressing herself when she wants something. Her ears are rather pointed at the top and the fur does not grow right up to the area around her eyes leaving a small ring of dark skin.
He was mother raised. He is very playful around his keepers, but for the most part his favorite past time is eating bamboo. He has a very round face, with round ears.Both pandas were quarantined for several weeks upon arriving at the Memphis zoo.
Artificial Insemination @ Memphis Zoo
Posted by Jeroen Jacobs | Date: 2012 05 17 | In: Memphis Zoo
Ya Ya was artificially inseminated a few weeks ago and Memphis zoo officials are watching her hormone levels to determine whether the procedure was successful.
The insemination caused an initial hormone spike, and now officials are waiting for a second spike. That would be a positive indicator that she’s pregnant. The second spike occurs 60 to 90 days after insemination, which could be as late as June, said Abbey Dane, director of marketing and communications.
If that spike occurs, a birth could happen within 45 days, Dane said.
Ya Ya will be 12 in August. There have been three unsuccessful attempts to impregnate her since her first fertility period at age 6, including a miscarriage in March 2010.
Ya Ya has typically gone into estrus between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Most pandas become fertile between March and May.
“Now she’s on a normal rotation,” Dane said. “Back when she was going into estrus over the holidays, that was abnormal.”
Efforts were made last year to adjust her environment, including the lighting and temperature, in the hopes that her cycle would shift to be more in line with pandas in the wild.
Ya Ya and male panda Le Le came to the Memphis Zoo in 2003 as part of the species conservation plan, on loan for 10 years from the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens.
“The tricky thing is her mom did this too. Her mom operated the same way and here’s Ya Ya,” Dane said. “So there’s always hope. This could be the time. ”
What does that mean at the Memphis Zoo? It means keeping our animals mentally and physically active through enrichment, training, and animal interactions.
Enrichment comes in many forms. For instance cats love scents; pandas like cardboard boxes that hide their favorite treats; and some primates like to create nests with wood wool. Keepers give animals enrichment to help elicit natural behaviors such as foraging, hunting, burrowing, climbing, and nesting – ones that would be the same or similar to that animal’s wild counterparts.
One of the most useful forms of enrichment is training. At the zoo, we use positive reinforcement, which just means animals are given a cue and when they do the behavior they get a reward. Training is voluntary and the animal always has the choice not to participate.
Most behaviors keepers train our animals are to help with their veterinary procedures and check ups. They may be trained to stand on scales, present their feet, open their mouth, go into crates, voluntarily get vaccinations, and be still for ultrasound procedures. Other behaviors are used to build a relationship between a keeper and the animal. These behaviors can be as simple as having the animal vocalize, trade an item from their enclosure for treats, or paint. Many of our animals paint and at the front of the zoo there will be a table where you can purchase a one-of-a-kind piece from one of our animals. All proceeds go towards conservation efforts being done for similar animals in the wild through our Memphis AAZK chapter.
