Bringing this forward ... If you are watching and haven't already donated and can help ..Please do and thanks ~
Our Cam Maintenance Matching Drive is off to a great start - we've already had several people adopt nests for next season or donate in other ways!
We do still have a ways to go, and our tree at Harrison Mills is the tallest tree with a cam, so may need professional climbers as well as Myles.
Thanks also to those of you who have provided information about the work that needs to be done on site. The cams badly need cleaning since we were not able to do that last year; it would be great if we could replace the domes, but unfortunately the cams are old enough that they no longer make replacement parts. I have not heard of any branches that need trimming, and the eagles have done a great job fixing up the nest so I don't think we need to add nest materials this year! If there are other things that could be done to improve our viewing, please let me know.
The general time when eagles are away is early August through late September - more or less; different pairs do seem to have different schedules, and some take longer breaks than others. And David and Myles both have a lot of things scheduled during that time, so they don't always have as much flexibility as they'd like as to when they work on a nest.
Here's what we know about the variables for Harrison Mills - it's not easy to know if this new pair will actually leave the area; last year they were around through July, and while we had a lot of issues with the cams in August, at least one eagle was seen on cam August 2 and 9, and they were being seen fairly frequently from August 23rd to September 8, then not so much for a couple of weeks although calls were heard occasionally and there were visits September 19, 22, 23, 28 and 29. This year they are still actively visiting the nest as of the end of July.
Please let me know if you have any additional thoughts or comments - you can send a PM or email me at [email protected].
Unfortunately I can't promise that we'll clean the cams this year - David very much wants to do that, and I know all of us who watch the cams want that - but we need to be sure that the eagles are away, because eagles in BC tend to abandon nests if they see people in them. However, the money we're raising now also goes towards the cost of site visits (Harrison Mills is also the longest drive every time Ken has to visit the site to restart the computers or do other work) - and will help with monthly internet costs and other expenses. If you've been thinking of donating, we really could use your help.
