~ D32 update on 12 July 2019 ~
This week has been eventful for D32. Tuesday, Kay and Savanna took D32 to the clinic for another x-ray. Dr Riordan was pleased with healing and said the cast should come off. The break did mend and there is additional calcification. As bones heal, the body deposits more calcium at the injury site. So far the calcification does not seem to be impacting D32's "ankle" joint. Thanks for the photos, Savanna!
Dr Riordan removed the cast, layer by layeras Kay held D32. After one more day of crate rest and observation, D32 was showing the signs of needing a bigger space (more energy, wanting to stretch wings, gained weight). Thursday, Kay did put a bit of wrap on the right leg for some support and D32 was moved to a 10x20 enclosure. Currently, D32 does have a roomie - a HY18 bald eagle who is at a similar stage of recovery and is not ready for a larger enclosure. D32 and roomie will be monitored to make sure both are getting plenty to eat. D32's wrap will be changed in a couple days.
The bone has healed as good as we hoped for... but certainly not 100% perfect. Now comes slow recovery and rehabilitation.
Thank Heather for the heads up !
Keeping good thought for D32 and HY18 and praying for their recovery!

Hi Philjo. Marianne, jwin and everyone I saw this RRP FaceBook and thanks Philjo for the scaps last night.
Happy Fri-yay, everyone! We have more information about blackflies and an answer to some of your questions about Mom, along with videos from Decorah, Decorah North, Great Spirit Bluff, and the Mississippi Flyway. Thanks to our camera operators and video makers for finding and sharing special moments, and to you for watching them!
Decorah and Decorah North Eagles
We got a nice long look at Mom on July ninth, which led to a lot of concerned questions about her appearance. Read this blog for more information: https://www.raptorresource.org/20…/…/12 ... orah-okay/
07/09/2019: Mom's feature film - https://youtu.be/uCpI4X-cW5s. Our first good look at Mom for weeks; still lots of flies bothering her, but she stays on camera for over an hour. This is a long video, but we've been waiting a long time to see her!
07/09/2019: Flyby heading upstream - https://youtu.be/Wkyf4JZ-X0c. A fast flyby! Are the eagles okay? Based on what we can see from our cameras and reports on the ground, they are flying, perching, and otherwise behaving normally, even if we aren't seeing very much of them!
07/10/2019: Visit at Decorah North - https://youtu.be/t3JtDhDTDOo. A nice breeze helps keep the gnasty gnats away!
Great Spirit Bluff
07/11/2019: Owl removes Kira's body - https://youtu.be/h1VFqIdLmf4. A fascinating video, although not everyone will like it. We'll be posting more on this shortly.
07/10/2019: Carson trades prey for dinner - https://youtu.be/ksgbvhpoqyQ. Carson is sprawled across the top of the nest box. Michelle flies into the rock ledge diner with prey and starts eating. We get a long shot and Carson is not there. He flies in at 3:04 (look for the flicker of his wings) and mantles over what turns out to be prey. So far, so good! At 3:33, Michelle heads toward him, holding prey in her beak. He continues to mantle and vocalize while watching her. She begins eating right behind him, appearing to offer food a couple of times (check 4:06, 4:08, and especially 4:14 for examples). He gets her in the face with a talon at 4:16 (it looks accidental to me). He takes her prey and she gets his prey.
Was this instinctive behavior, food exchange training. or something else? We don't know, but it is really interesting!
Mississippi Flyway
7/11/19: A Bald eagle and cranes - https://youtu.be/YRZ0eUlQL7M. The islands and sand bars of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge provide important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including bald eagles and sandhill cranes. As summer moves into fall, we'll see more of them preparing for migration by feeding and gathering in larger flocks.
07/09/19: Egrets - https://youtu.be/M2wLwhVAtgM. Check 7:22 for a really cool look at an egret preening! Egrets were an important part of the passage of the Lacey Act. You can learn more here: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/…/how-tw ... nded-the-d…/.

Hi everyone !
Raptor Resource Project
11 hrs ·
It looks like another episode of 'As The Nest Turns' has dropped! A beautiful 4-1/2 year old subadult showed up in the Decorah territory, perching near Momat N1 and spending time in N2B. Videos here:
https://youtu.be/UFTG4tsSSNo
https://youtu.be/Dq1y-e9VDXk
Is this a rival suitor to DM2? A previous year's offspring dropping in for a visit? We don't know, but we'll be watching and there is an active discussion about it in our forum.

Thanks for the airmail, D27! D27 is beating the heat up in northwestern Ontario, southwest of Fort Severn. After looking at her travels and latitude, I got real curious about how much daylight she was experiencing. At her latitude, astronomical twilight has just started to fall. She won't experience true night until August 9th. Her day is currently 16 hours and 58 minutes long, which gives her a lot of time to travel!
What was she doing this time last year? About the same thing, just a little southwest of her current location. See the placename Muskrat Dam Lake? Brett tracked an adult female eagle who wintered in Eagle Valley and nested not far from MDL.
What's the land like? I downloaded the kml file, clicked over to google maps, and took a look. It's remote and generally flat, with a lot of lakes, a lot of conifers, and a fair amount of muskeg/bog - great fishing territory for eagles and people! Stay safe, D27 - and don't forget to write! We're looking forward to watching your travels this fall.
A thousand thanks to Brett Mandernack and the staff of Eagle Valley for sharing their expertise, maps, and data with us. To follow the travels of any of the eagles we've tracked, go to https://www.raptorresource.org/learning ... eagle-map/. To download a kml map for Google Earth (and a deeper map experience), select 'Download Google Earth Map' in the map controls section of our interactive maps.
