Glacier Gardens Eagles, Juneau Alaska - 2019 Season

11:47am - After Papa placed the stick...he checks in on his eaglets.

11:48am - Mama & Papa are tracking something overhead...but no vocals.

11:49am - A little family time together

11:55am - While Papa uncovers a fish from the moss, Mama keeps her attention focused around the nest area.

11:59am - Mama decides to leave the nest while Papa prepares to feed Ch'aak' & Anaaski.

12:04pm - Papa feeds who I believe is Ch'aak' (4) while Anaaski stays low in the nest and waits...

12:05pm - After feeding Ch'aak' some of this fish, he decides that he'd like to eat the fish tail!

12:06pm - When Papa was finished eating the fish tail, he reaches over by the pile of moss and picks up another fish!

12:15pm - Papa starts to feed from the 2nd fish and Ch'aak' takes the first bite. Anaaski looks on and wants some fish, too!

12:15pm - As Papa was preparing another fish bite...Ch'aak' bonks Anaaski!

12:16pm - Ch'aak' has a full crop and Anaaski seems to know it's now time to grab some fish!
Anaaski now getting lot's of fish bites from Papa while Ch'aak' watches the feeding.

3:00pm - A beautiful time spent with Mama...

3:02pm - While Mama starts aerating the nest bowl, Ch'aak' & Anaaski wake up and look around to see what's happening.

3:20pm - While Ch'aak' & Anaaski sleep, Mama senses someone watching her!

4:14pm - While this s'cap seems peaceful...there has been a lot of bonking going on from Ch'aak'...but,
I did see one time where Anaaski bonked Ch'aak' right back! It just seems like Ch'aak' is in the bonking mood this afternoon!

4:15pm - Ch'aak' (on the left) and Anaaski are checking each other out and then...

BONK! Ch'aak' bonks Anaaski!

4:16pm - Well...guess who decided they have had enough bonking! Anaaski sized up Ch'aak' and then BONKED Ch'aak'!

And, on that note...A strong storm is right over me now, so I need to go!

Mama Liberty, Papa Freedom, GG4 has been named: Ch'áak' and GG5 has been named: Anáaski

7:02am - Fish break-fish time!
Papa starts to feed his eaglets and Ch'aak' is getting the first of many fish pieces but...
Anaaski is in the back watching and waiting ...and learning...

Anaaski waits and then goes for the grab! Anaaski is now getting many pieces of fish!

Looks like Ch'aak' is full of fish and does not bonk at Anaaski.
Anaaski is now getting it's full of fish, too!

Just wanted to say: If anyone captures some s'caps of this seasons GG eagles... we'd love to see them here in the forum! Please feel free to post them!

Hi Shoupie! No...I have never heard or seen anything about "faux feeding" before! This was so interesting to watch!
I wonder if David Hancock has seen this before!...?

5:00pm - Mama arrives to the nest with a bunch of nesting materials in her talons!

5:03pm - Papa decides to go take a break and flies away from the nest.

(The red circle shows the large clump of nesting materials that Mama just brought to the nest... You can
see one of the eaglets peeking out from behind it.)

I had a wonderful day spending time with some disabled eagles today to celebrate American Eagle Day...
and I'm now just getting back home!

6/21/19 - Friday

5:45am Mama greets the warmth of the morning sun while Ch'aak' & Anaaski sleep.

Ch'áak' (GG4) is 14 days old today.
Anáaski (GG5) is 12 days old today.

6:08am

5:45am - Mama seems to be interested in something down below the nest...

Mama is very careful getting up... using her balled-up talons so to not step on her eaglets as she moves away from them.
Ch'aak' & Anaaski remain sleeping.

5:46am - Mama decides to go investigate what she is seeing below the nest area...

5:51am Mama returns with a fish while Chaak & Anaaski start waking up. (red dot = the fish)

5:52am - While still standing on the fish, Mama vocals.

5:54am Papa arrives to the nest with a fish...also!

Mama vocals again while Papa checks on his eaglets who seem to still be sleepy... (or could be staying low in the nest
because of Mama's vocals).

5:55am - Mama decides to leave the nest. Looks like it's Papa's turn to watch & feed his eaglets!

7:35am - While Papa has been feeding his eaglets, Mama returns with some kind of bag!

7:36am - Papa decides to leave the nest.

Mama spends some time catching her breath while still standing on the bag...
and her eaglets now seem to be in a deep food coma!

A closeup view of what Mama just delivered the her nest...A plastic bag of some kind!

Mama seems to be eating something from this plastic bag...as her eaglets watch.
(It seemed to me that Mama was having to swallow this piece of whatever more than usual...)

...she also feaked her beak on the nest material while eating it. I could not tell what she ate.

Mama seems to want to get into this plastic bag...as Ch'aak & Anaaski watches to see what she does with it...

After Mama checks out the plastic bag she decides to aerate the nest...deeply.

One of the eaglets now goes closer to the plastic bag...

I went over to the live chat just now and saw that Glacier Gardens posted this statement:

"​It is trash day here, so our best guess is someone put their trash out too early, a bear dumped it, and the eagles took the opportunity for some free food."

I am loving the two little GG's - so adorable, and growing so quickly.

I hate to see that plastic bag on the nest, though.

Yes... I had to go take a little break after I saw and watched what Mama did with that plastic bag!
I sure hope some wind comes through, soon, and blows it off the nest!
(Hopefully the wind will carry it far away from the nest tree area where it can be discarded properly)!

2:30pm - The wind has picked up a little this afternoon...
Current wind gusts: 5 mph. (The plastic bag is still on the nest - behind Papa)
Papa is watching around the nest area while Ch'akk' & Anaaski sleep.

3:06pm - Papa is now providing some shade for Ch'aak' & Anaaski!

(We can see that the plastic bag is still on the nest - behind Papa)

4:25pm - Papa is checking out something over head and he does not vocalize.
Ch'aak' & Anaaski continue to sleep in the swaying nest tree.

5:00am - Papa rests while Ch'aak' & Anaaski sleep. The 2 plastic bags that Mama delivered yesterday are still on the nest.

5:15am - Papa feeds Ch'aak' & Anaaski some fish from the 'fish-pantry'.

As the feeding slows down, Papa sends out a vocal alert.
