Good night/morning everyone, bonjour Bev, …!
23h40 I will be back when something special like DN9's return or a view on DNF or Dad will happen. I will check every day !
wishing a quick healing to DN9 and i hope they will return her in her area soon. (SE21 the sea eagle from Sydney was return in her area after many months at a rehab center. Then she was seen flying with her parents a couple of time…)

HAPPY NEWS ... HAPPY TEARS RE DN9
~ DN9 moves to the eaglet nursery ~
DN9 was moved to the eaglet nursery on 17 June 2019. DN9 joins D33 and the Allamakee eaglet. DN9 has gained 1.5 pounds in 10 days and still needs to gain weight. The initial beak depth measurement says 'boy,' but Kay is thinking that DN9 is a female based on the amount of weight to be gained and that this eaglet is not done growing.
While faithful nest-watchers were able to identify D33 from D32 while in the nest... Kay says that many eaglets in a flight room start to look alike! Fingernail polish has been painted on a specific talon on DN9 - left inside talon is teal. Over time, the nail polish will wear off.
D33 has a right talon painted and Allamakee has no painted talons.
Those of us viewing photos of the nursery may never see the colored talons, but Kay will be able to use these references to give us details into progress for each youngster.
Good Luck to all three Keeping D32 in my thoughts and prayers !

DETERMINING GENDER IN BALD EAGLES
By SOAR - Linette19 June 2019Notes
As part of ongoing data collection looking at bald eagles and lead exposure in birds admitted to wildlife rehabilitators in Iowa, SOAR started collecting beak depth measurements. A research paper from Garcelon et al (Journal of Wildlife Management 49(3):1985) is the basis for SOAR to use beak depth measurement for a gender determination. The Garcelon paper discussed 12 different measurements taken on bald eagles, but that beak depth showed no overlap in values between the sexes. This is the least invasive way to determine gender. A metric dial caliper is used and the measurement is taken from the top of the upper beak (maxilla) next to the cere to the bottom point on the lower beak (mandible). The paper describes it: “from the dorsal aspect of the maxilla adjacent to the cere, to the ventralmost portion of the mandible.” The measurement is expressed in centimeters (cm). In the bald eagles measured in the Garcelon et al study, male bald eagles had a beak depth range of 3.0 cm to 3.349 cm, while the female bald eagle beak depth ranged from 3.35 cm to 3.6 cm. All the eagles in the study were North Central United States and Canada and should be transferable to bald eagles in Iowa.
Also remember that female bald eagles will weigh more than males and that northern bald eagles are larger than those from the southern U.S.
