The 3 Giant Pandas at San Diego Zoo are all back in their homeland China as of May 16 {Daddy Gao Gao as of October '18}, as a loan agreement was up in March ~ more photos & details to follow ~ :cry1:
We wish them the very best, ~ in long continued happy lives :rh: :pan: ~ & we are so thankful to have had them as long as we did ~ and for the joy & research they provided for all at the Zoo!
Enjoy this archived footage of Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu. They are are no longer visible to the public as they prepare for their journey to China. https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/panda-cam
In honoring the terms of our conservation loan agreement with the People’s Republic of China, 27-year-old Bai Yun and her son, 6-year-old Xiao Liwu, will leave the San Diego Zoo this spring, and will be repatriated to their ancestral homeland. We are now working with colleagues in China to determine and redefine the future of panda conservation and research.

Zoo’s Giant Panda Friendship Wall Dismantled, Pandas Set to Return to China

By City News Service
The San Diego Zoo dismantled its Giant Panda Friendship Wall on Tuesday, signifying the end of its giant panda farewell celebration and its 23-year giant panda loan agreement with the People's Republic of China.
The zoo's last two giant pandas, 27-year-old panda Bai Yun and her 6- year-old son Xiao Liwu, are scheduled to be repatriated to China later this spring as part of the loan agreement. A third panda, Gao Gao, was repatriated last October.
The zoo held a farewell celebration over the past month to celebrate the species and the zoo's relationship with Chinese conservationists. According to the zoo, the wild panda population in China has increased to nearly 2,000 bears since its conservation efforts began more than 25 years ago when there were fewer than 1,000 in the wild.
The zoo's panda exhibit and panda cam officially shut down Monday evening.
"Although we are sad to see Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu go, we have great hopes for the future," said San Diego Zoo Director Dwight Scott. "We will continue to work with our partners in China for the next stage of our panda program."
The friendship wall served as a physical symbol of the month-long celebration, allowing zoo visitors to hang personal messages relaying their adoration for the species upon it as well as commemorative bells, which the zoo sold to fund its future giant panda conservation efforts.....

On May 16, 2019, two of San Diego's beloved residents -- giant pandas Bai Yun, 27, and her son, Xiao Liwu, 6 -- arrived safely back in their homeland.
The furry pair had been living at the San Diego Zoo, on loan from China. When the zoo's 23-year conservation agreement with China ended, the deal was that the pandas would be repatriated to China.
Here's a look at the mother-son duo as they settle into their homeland. They're living at the China Giant Panda Conservation Research Center.

Goodbye, Gao Gao. The San Diego Zoo said farewell Tuesday to one of its most recognizable fuzzy residents: Gao Gao, a giant panda who has long helped lead conservation efforts for the species.
Gao Gao – a father of five cubs, all born at the San Diego Zoo – had been living at the facility for the past 15 years as part of a long-term loan agreement with the People’s Republic of China.
With his work in San Diego now completed, the patriarch is returning to the Chinese Center for Research and Conservation for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Dujiangyan, China, zoo officials said.
The panda’s departure comes as the San Diego Zoo’s giant panda conservation program enters a new phase. When the program began more than two decades ago, extinction threatened the species. Today, the giant panda population is on the rise, with about 2,000 giant pandas living in the wild, according to the zoo.
