Although it was a very sad day at the NCTC nest there were good moments too.
The remaining chick was alert, active and had plenty of fish so great in and output.
Bella and Smitty doted over their chick

Nice feeding for the baby 738 pm
Just before dark tonight ...
Bella moved the body of her dead chick; she ate part of chick then moved the body closer to the egg cup.
I wonder if she wanted the baby near or whether she was going to consume or feed the body to her chick.
It looked like the body was going to be consumed, which is common behavior in these situations ... no food source goes wasted in nature. Bless Bella and Smitty and their remaining chick ... we pray the rest of the season is joyful and uneventful for this family
As i have done for many years i continue to document observations at this nest; now via a spreadsheet as it is shareable. I would like to thank Terri WestVA as she helps me maintain it ... I could not do it without her help.
Dee i miss you here

Hi Debs, i read the bad news yesterday but so sorry, and so sad, i was unable to write something.
Be sure this little one is now on the other side of the mirror in a better place wher i'm sure this beautiful eaglet met Belle who is taking care of Him/Her. This beauty isn't alone now and as Belle he will take a look at this nest, parents and sibling like do all the others at their own nests.
Do you know which one fledged to the Heavens, the older, the younger ?
Fly free, fly high with Always a full crop NCTC Eaglet !
All the best for the second one, Bella and Smitty

Good Morning NCTC Family
We are pleased to announce that the eaglets have been named by Rachel Weaver's 4th Grade Students from the Chamberlain Elementary School in Charleston. The students picked the name Hope Ann Faith for the eaglet. Angel was suggested for the eaglet that passed on Please join me in extending our appreciation to the 4th Grade students for choosing excellent names for the NCTC eaglets ... well done! There was also another teacher that mentioned they had chose the same names hats off to them as well! We love the names Hope and Angel a perfect fit for the NCTC eaglets
Thanks to Clayton at NCTC for pulling out the live cam yesterday so that we have an expanded view (default position) of the nest. Hope has been exploring out of our view so now we can keep track of the "explorer" 24/7
Hope has reached its 3 week old milestone and with that comes tremendous growth! The eaglet is getting its first feathers (sometimes called blood feathers) that combined with its very large feet makes walking comical as the chick tries to balance itself! On many occasions i thought the chick was going to tip over and do a face plant as it leaned forward to line itself up to have a poop shoot! The sweet lett is more active (when not digesting a big meal) and often copies Mom and Dad; yesterday the chick was moving sticks and greenery placing it all around himself such cute interaction to watch!
There has been signs of intruders or unwanted visitors in the territory hopefully those visitors have left the area!

Re: NCTC Bald Eagles - Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 2018-2019
930 am
Hope is snuggled up nest center.
Bella is in the attic and Smitty is nearby too as we just heard them alerting.
Perhaps Bella is telling Dad to go fishing ... hope that is all it is.

Smitty delivered a nice prey for breakfast.
Bella followed him in and promptly claimed the meal.
Hope is enjoying a nice meal now.
1030 am
Feeding just wrapped up; look at Hope's big crop he is nearly
tipping over trying to balance himself while he moves to nest
center for a nap!

I was surprised when I checked in today. This young eaglet is so grown up. And I love this nest. It is so pretty and peaceful here. They grow so fast.
