^ click 2X biggest ~ Ya Lun on the left, 4 days after weaning
The cubs have been fully weaned from Lun Lun for four days now. As mentioned in previous posts, things are going smoothly and according to plan for the pandas and their care team. Lun Lun seems to appreciate the time to do what she likes without having to worry about being available for the cubs, and the cubs are spending extra time playing with each other, engaging with their enrichment, and enjoying time spent with their care team. When they aren’t busy with their latest wrestling match, the cubs are doing what giant pandas do best: sleeping. When the cubs were still with Lun Lun, she would often wake them up first thing in the morning when she was hungry. Lun Lun would bring them inside so that we could get a visual check on them and give them their supplemental formula, and being the smart giant panda that she is, quickly correlated that bringing her cubs in meant that it was time for leafeater biscuits or bamboo. This meant that much to the cubs’ disapproval at times, she would wake them up and bring them inside or vocalize for them to follow first thing in the morning. Now that they don’t have the Lun Lun alarm clock going off as the sun comes up, they are typically spending most of the morning snoozing. Ya Lun and Xi Lun are now considered sub-adults, and much like human sub-adults, sometimes sleeping in past Noon just sounds like a solid option!

On the left she comes close to check it out, sits back again, and then takes the biggest piece of boo out of Xi Lun's mouth, so Xi Lun gets and breaks another stalk of boo. I've seen Ya Lun do that before, and most of the cubs, usually from Mama Lun. :grlol;

Everyone is settling into the new routine in PandaLand – giant panda care team and pandas alike. We have routinely been coming to work and finding everyone happily asleep in the mornings, which is always a good thing. Sometimes the twins stay asleep until 10 a.m.! This is normal as they’re still growing and need the extra siestas. The only thing we wish could change is the weather! Rainy days means that the giant pandas don’t go outside (they don’t like getting wet).
In other news, we are in the final stages of prepping Habitat 3, the off-habitat outdoor space which will make both Lun Lun and Yang Yang very happy. This outdoor area has a bamboo forest within it which enables the pandas to harvest bamboo naturally. The bamboo forest isn’t very large, and the adults decimate it within a couple of weeks. Afterward we have to let the forest grow back for another couple of years before it can be used again, but for the next couple of weeks Lun Lun and Yang Yang will be super-happy pandas! The twins won’t get to experience Habitat 3 until they are a little bigger; first they need to explore Habitat 2 since they’ve never been there!

As Jen mentioned on Monday, we have been preparing the special behind-the-scenes third outdoor habitat for the adult giant pandas to use. In this habitat, the giant pandas can forage for bamboo and nap in their own private world. Just like the other habitats, this one has a pool and trees and other vegetation to keep it shaded and comfortable. Yang Yang especially loves spending time in this habitat. You can see how content he is in the photo!

It’s always interesting to see how this set of twins is different from the last, especially since both sets are female. Mei Lun and Mei Huan were much more quiet, yet awake and active in the morning waiting for fresh food. Ya Lun and Xi Lun have so far been sleepier in the mornings and way more vocal once they get up. Their vocalizations as cubs and subadults are mainly chirps. If their mother were around they would be chirping to say “I want milk!” As subadults they’re chirping to say “We want attention and leafeater biscuits!” We’ve inadvertently realized that they have made the associations with being in behind-the-scenes areas with always getting leafeater biscuits. While we do reinforce shifting from one place to another, we need to teach the girls that just because you’re behind the scenes doesn’t mean you will be given an unlimited amount of leafeater biscuits. The care team is always having to analyze everything they do to determine whether they are accidentally reinforcing behaviors that will, at a later time, become potentially problematic. This includes walking by two cute little pandas and getting “suckered” into giving them a treat just because!

We are well into arrow bamboo (Pseudosasa japonica) season. This is usually one of the favorite times of the year for the giant pandas, and this year’s harvest is no exception. The twins are especially obsessed with arrow. It is really long and skinny, the perfect size for an animal whose jaw strength is still developing. When we clean up the overnight mess from the “subs,” as I like to call them, we rarely find a whole piece of arrow. We just find a mess of shards where the whole pieces used to be.

Things have been status-quo in PandaLand for the last few days, which makes things rather uneventful (which is good!). That being said, I don’t know about you but all, these weather and temperature fluctuations from Mother Nature are wreaking havoc on my sinuses! The giant pandas are taking it in stride as always, except for Yang Yang, who has decided that he simply can’t “panda” in the mornings and needs to sleep in a little more. Of course who can say no to him when he’s flopped over like he tends to do? Maybe this is where the twins get their “Let’s-just-sleep-in-a-little-more” personality traits, because Lun Lun is almost always ready and waiting for fresh food in the morning! One thing is for sure: The twins have without a doubt inherited some of their dad’s dramatic flair!

Those of you who have been following Zoo Atlanta’s giant pandas for a while may remember that our first set of twins, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, enjoyed sharing bamboo. No matter how much bamboo they had, they always sat next to each other and ate the same piece together. Ya Lun and Xi Lun are now doing the same thing sometimes. However, unlike Mei Lun and Mei Huan, these two girls aren’t quite so sisterly about sharing. Ya Lun and Xi Lun do share the same piece of bamboo, but they do a lot of grabbing, shoving, pushing, and vocalizing while doing so. We are not worried about this behavior – the girls are not injuring each other or unhappy; they just have different ways of doing things than their older sisters did.

This is the first day I’ve been back in Panda Land in a while, and I was super excited to see all the giant pandas today. I’ve been training on the meat-eating side of the Carnivore Department, and the cubs seemed to have doubled in size since last time I saw them. I thought it an appropriate time to write a quick update on everyone’s favorite papa bear since it’s been a while since we have updated you all on what Yang Yang is up to. Yang Yang is currently demonstrating behaviors that are natural for male giant pandas at the time of year that’s associated with giant panda breeding season. He’s doing a lot more scent-marking, olfactory investigation, and patrolling his territory. We decided to give him some extra-special scent enrichment today because he is so into sniffing around his habitats lately. Before we recycled this cardboard box, we filled it with wood wool, sprinkled it with cinnamon, and then put a few drops of Tabasco and rubbing alcohol on the outside. These scents (along with all of our animal enrichment) are approved by our Veterinary Team as being safe to use for the animals. Before we could even get our cameras ready, Yang Yang had destroyed the box and proceeded to self-anoint with it. This is probably my favorite thing the giant pandas do. After a good self-anointing session, Yang Yang was nice and smelly and ready to continue with his day.

^ click 2X biggest ~ The Giant Pandas are camouflaged light & shadows, in their forest/jungle and enjoying them selves :%:
Many people often wonder how giant pandas are able to survive in dense bamboo forests while also being black-and-white. After all, it doesn’t necessarily make sense for a black-and-white animal to be adequately camouflaged in a green and brown forest …right?
Giant pandas are actually very good at blending into their surroundings! Their coat coloration plays off of the shadows and patches of sunlight throughout the forest, similarly to a zebra’s ability to blend in on the savannas of Africa. This is a very valuable adaptation for pandas because it allows them to hide in plain sight, which is super useful in the wilds of China, but not necessarily as useful when your care staff want to keep an eye on you here at Zoo Atlanta.
If you tuned into PandaCam yesterday morning, you may have noticed that the cam was directed to a very forested habitat. You may have wondered why we decided to show you a forested area, and if you were lucky, you may have gotten a glimpse of a certain black-and-white papa bear enjoying his morning out in our behind-the-scenes habitat. You’ll notice that some parts of his body seem to melt into the shadows, and he almost disappears completely. I always love seeing the giant pandas enjoying their time in this habitat, and I’m always fascinated watching them melt…err, walk…into the forest.

If you tuned into PandaCam on Thursday morning, you would have seen Ya Lun and Xi Lun in one of the outdoor habitats. This was the first time we have given the twins access to the outdoor habitats since they were weaned. Since the girls tend to prefer the indoor habitats and Lun Lun prefers the outdoor habitats, we decided that during weaning, those were the areas we would use for them, respectively. This week was the first opportunity we have had to see how Ya Lun and Xi Lun would behave outdoors now that they are independent. We weren’t altogether sure, because even when the girls were with Lun Lun, they often preferred to be inside, so we weren’t sure if they would take to the area or not. However, our uncertainty was misguided. Ya Lun and Xi Lun spent the morning foraging on bamboo and then took a nap on the structure together! We will make sure to give them more opportunities in the outdoor habitats in the future.

Since Ya Lun and Xi Lun have adjusted so well to their new routine, we’ve decided they are ready for the next step. Recently we have tried having Yang Yang stay overnight in the dayroom right next to theirs, and the subadults have done very well with that. They are usually sound asleep when we arrive in the mornings, and all their overnight bamboo is generally well consumed. So, the next step is to switch which dayrooms Yang Yang and the subadults have overnight. Yang Yang is going to have the one at the far end of the building, and the “subs” will be in the closer one. If Ya Lun and Xi Lun do well with this step we will be able to add more variety to their routine.

Spring Break is in full swing at Zoo Atlanta, but the giant pandas are oblivious to that. The only “issues” are the squabbles between a certain pair of subadults. I was speaking with Heather R. the other day, and we were recounting how much bickering Mei Lun and Mei Huan did at this age. We both agreed that while they did have squabbles over bamboo (because the piece your sister has *must* be better than everything else), the current twins seems to squabble and bicker out-loud a little more. The vocalizations are called “whines,” and it’s quite comical to listen to them fighting over a piece of bamboo when surrounded by a half a dozen other pieces! It’s important for them to learn to work their problems out, so unless things get really loud we don’t intervene. Apparently the twins think it’s a tough world out there and it’s every panda for themselves! Ironically, they still insist on sleeping together and eating together regardless of it all. If you ask me, they’re acting like true sisters!
