THE POLICE ACADEMY NEST

In 2005, a pair of bald eagles, Liberty & Justice built their nest on the grounds of the Metropolitan Police Department in Southeast Washington, DC. The pair has raised two eaglets every year for the last 11 years.

This nest is 110 feet up on an oak tree.

Liberty, the female, has primary responsibility for incubating her eggs and caring for the young chicks. Justice, the male, has the crucial job of catching fish and bringing them for his mate and eaglets.

The adults, Liberty and Justice, were named by former Police Chief Cathy Lanier, on the day of the Boston Bombing. She called a press conference at the eagle's nest to name them

..Some history about this nest ~~

These eagles are an urban wildlife success story. Pollution forced bald eagles to abandon their last DC nest in 1946. Restoring the Bald Eagle as a nesting resident of their community was the dream of the teenage volunteers of the Earth Conservation Corps.

In 1994, the teenage volunteers of the Earth Conservation Corps launched a bold experiment to try to spur the return of the bald eagle as a nesting resident of our Nation's Capital

In 1996 youths from the Earth Conservation Corps, under a permit from the Fish and Wildlife Service, began releasing 16 young bald eagles from Wisconsin at the National Arboretum in Washington in an attempt to restore the birds to the Anacostia region.

The Corps translocated 16 eaglets from nests in Wisconsin to an artificial "hack box" located in the U.S. National Arboretum. After being raised for six weeks at the Arboretum the juvenile eagles were released into the skies over Washington. Four eaglets were released every spring from 1994 to 1998. The eagle restoration efforts by the youth of the Earth Conservation Corps galvanized the entire city in their mission to restore the eagles' Anacostia River habitat.

At that time the Anacostia was one of the nation’s most polluted rivers and the communities along the river were some of its most violent. In subsequent years, several pairs of eagles have built nests along the river, and the Anacostia River is rebounding.

The Washington, DC nest of the famous pair, The President and First Lady, was also a result of these efforts. That nest is also here on the forum and is sponsered by the American Eagle Foundstion.

Good Morning everyone, a quick summary on this nest. The male eagle Justice has not been seen on the cam or nest since Saturday morning. Before he was last seen he and Liberty mated on the nest. On Sunday an intruder male was seen on the cam with Liberty. She was not happy at all. We have named him M1 for now. He has hung around the nest and followed here every movement.
On Monday night it appeared at first that Justice was back because they both came to the nest and acted like a well bonded couple. But that was not the case. We only saw Liberty on the nest early in the morning Tuesday and not until late in the afternoon did she come in by herself and lay the egg. Since Liberty and Justice mated on Saturday that we saw we are assuming it is his egg. We have not seen Liberty and M1 bond at all yet.
The egg may not make it to hatch. Liberty has been off and on the egg all day for long stretches. M1 did bring a fish to the nest while she was out at one point and ate but Liberty came back in and ate some of the fish while M1 moved to a side branch.
More updates to come
Ps. I am a mod at this nest cam

Sunday February 17, 2018

Well a second egg was laid last night at 7:28, 4 days after the first. We still have not seen Justice anywhere, no downed or wounded eagles around. We now have 2 intruder males and possibly a third. So hard to tell them apart now. Liberty is doing the best she can incubating the eggs herself, but this will be a long month. One of the M's came to the nest and looked like he wanted to incubate but that is dangerous. Liberty came flying back and kicked him off the nest.. As the nest turns.. More to follow

Hi,  , as usual, Ferenz, your scaps are beautiful. In the scap of the closeup of the feet is there a talon missing on the foot? That is what it looks like.
These are the kinds of photos that make it easier to identify a particular eagle. You have a real talent!
Thank you for all your scaps here and all the nests you cover!

Thursday February 28th

Thanks so much for getting this thread going and thanks so much Ferenz for taking such great scaps of the goings on. It has been a tough couple of weeks but as you noted, Justice did come home yesterday and reclaimed his nest. Liberty was seen going to the roost before Justice headed there last night. We have heard her in the back ground so we are sure she knows he is back. Today has been a quiet day after he left the nest at 9:25am.

At 12:10 yesterday 2/27/19 Justice makes his return. The intruder eagle we dubbed M4 was on the nest and a battle was to insue, in comes Justice!

Justice lets everyone know who is back in town! Some id marks are his tell tale two white feathers on his right hind leg, his light colored bibb and a small fleck in his left eye.

Sunday March 3, 2019

Liberty and Justice left their night time perch early this morning and flew to the nest where Liberty did some rearranging in the nest. Both left for the day. Later Justice came to the nest with a huge catfish which he ate on his own..

ecc 3 3 19 006.jpg
Justice hung out on his perching branch for several hours as the rain came down and just before dusk Liberty comes to their roosting area and Justice goes to the nest looks for nestovers then joins her at the roost.

A raccoon climbed up into the nest tonight and broke into and ate the non -viable eggs of Liberty & Justice. Coincidentally, Justice brought in roadkill raccoon earlier to the nest - Liberty did fly in and take it and eat. Truly nothing goes to waste on these nests. Thank you for watching!
