The Two Harbors and West End eagle cams have been done for a few days due to storm activity.
Conditions are not favorable to visit the area yet so Dr. Sharpe hopes to get there soon to do a reset.

Good Evening Channel Islands :bye 1:

The Bald Canyon, West End and Two Harbors live eagle cams remain down.

Here is an update from Dr. Sharpe

There is only one road open to get across Catalina, and any rain closes a section of it about halfway to Two Harbors. I should be able to get to Two Harbors on Friday or Saturday (if it doesn't rain anymore) and realign the antennas for the Two Harbors and Bald Canyon cams. Sounds like the roads past Two Harbors are closed, so it would be a 2-day hike from Two Harbors to push the button on the West End inverter. Maybe the roads will be open when I get back from Santa Cruz again on March 6th.

Evening Two Harbors :bye 1:

The cam came back on line today; perfect timing too as Mom laid her first egg of the 2019 nesting season at 910 pm.
Mom appeared to have a very long labor in terms of eagles over ten minutes.

I only got a partial view of one egg today; the cup is so deep so hard to see both eggs.

2019 Summary

Both eaglets did well!

They were banded on May 16, and subsequently named:
- 24/A (M)/Marcus
- 57/A (F)/Miss Cat
I'm not sure which one is older, but they are only a day apart.

Marcus fledged June 11 when he was just 68 or 69 days old, so not quite 10 weeks; to humanize slightly, he may not have felt quite ready, because he didn't take his second flight until 10 days later, on June 21. Miss Cat fledged June 26, when she was 83-84 days old.

Both fledglings were seen in the area for a while, and Marcus actually stayed into September.

This pair usually lays their eggs in mid to late February, so we could see an egg any day now.

Quick summary for 2020 -

Chase and Cholyn laid a second egg on March 1st at 9:02 pm, almost exactly 3 days after their first egg. Sadly one of the eggs broke on March 20; it looks as if it was non-viable or stopped developing early, and there's no way to know which egg broke.

The remaining egg hatched at 1:58 pm on April 5th, which would be day 38 for the first egg or day 35 for the second. It produced a feisty little chick who grew quickly and took his or her first flight at 1:26 pm on June 26 - 82 days old. The eaglets on the Channel Islands weren't banded this year, but many were named - and this eaglet was named Champion.

The last visit by Champion that I found on Facebook was August 21, when he or she was 138 days old (almost 20 weeks). Jann Gallivan, a mainstay of the IWS forum and the Channel Islands Eagle Lovers Facebook page, made a lovely collage honoring Champion, and I've sent a request asking for permission to share it here.

Added - with thanks to and permission from Jann, meet Champion (clicks bigger):
