This post is hopefully going to start with one picture from a visit to our Surrey Reserve nest, placed inline.

20190123_003.jpg

That worked! I'm now editing the post to add this line.

That also worked - the picture is still there. I am now adding a second image, also inline, from the same visit.

20190123_002.jpg

That also worked - I'm now editing my post with two pictures.

So far so good - end of this test.
I'm now quoting my first post with pictures, to see if quoting works.

And it does; the pictures do not show up, because they are only attached to the original post. All working as expected.

My images are jpg - it's possible that the issue is with other types of photos. Off to check.

Are you having trouble posting, Sunnybird? Some people have reported issues adding images to their posts, and I am trying to test some of that, so if you've had a problem, I'd love to know the details.

I'm adding a large png image captured by catspairadice at the Trio nest; png images take more space than jpg images, which might be causing an issue. I'm first going to place it inline; it did take a long time to load, probably because I don't have a superfast internet connection - and it is 2.4 MB:

And now I'm going to add the same image a second time, not placing it inline.

And that also worked. I will mention that I know not all screen capture software can do this - but we would prefer to have the images saved as JPG when possible.

The third image here is the same picture saved as jpg - it looks the same to me, but is 244 KB, 1/10 the size of the full screen PNG image.

OK now I think things are working right.
What would happen is that I would Log On as usual. Then type a post, then screen would flip me back to Log On screen. It would do that with Preview and Submit buttons. Of course I would lose the message. I didn't get as far as to Add Files, so don't know about images.
If you can read this, things are working normally. :)

Thank you.
I thought this is probably happening to others also? :dunno:

Testing to see if I can post or not.

OK, that worked so far.

Some members have been having trouble attaching photos, and they tend to be people who post their own photos of wildlife, rather than screenshots, and those can be larger - so I'm going to post a few larger pictures to see if I have trouble with that.

My husband took me out to dinner yesterday for valentine's day, and a friend took our picture.

And I get the error - hooray! Much easier to fix if I can recreate the problem!

This is a small picture - 228 KB; a larger one, 1.2 MB (or 1200 KB) would not post.

Mmud's picture at 3/4 size - 405 KB

Trying my larger cat picture again - got HTTP Error

Deleted that, and am posting small cat picture - 302 KB
Chelsea_9095a.jpg

Clicked submit

Editing to add mmud's big picture
Scott test - original.jpg

That worked - so now I'll try my big cat picture - HTTP ERROR

Deleted file, clicked submit, edited post

Trying big cat picture again - didn't work. Wonder if the problem is that my picture is 4000 px wide; mmud's is only 2000 wide.

Trying a picture that's cropped so less than 4000 px wide - Nope. And it's smaller than mmud's image.

Very strange.

Trying something else - large cat picture....

The picture I'm trying to add is about 1.7 MB, and I don't have enough hands and eyes to time it, but it seems as if it took about 5 seconds before the green bar reached the edge and I got the error message.
20190215_001.jpg
20190215_001.jpg (4.41 KiB) Viewed 6239 times

For normal screenshots, that happens so fast I rarely notice the status bar on the right.

When this doesn't work, if I X out of the error box, I still have no way to post the picture, and it doesn't show up as an attachment, because it's not uploaded.
20190215_002.jpg

After posting the picture above, I re-edited the post and looked at the attachments, and the one that didn't load had disappeared.

Original size of the photo = 4000 x 3000 4.2 MB

2000 x 1500 1.2 MB
2000.jpg

3000 x 2250 2.3 MB
3000.jpg

3001 x 2325 2.43 MB would not post. Error message.

3000 x 2250 2.9 MB (I did some editing which increased the MB (but not the pixels and it posted with no problem

I've tweaked one of my pictures of our cat Chelsea Girl so it's 1.7 MB and 3000 pixels wide - trying to add it now.
IMG_9059b.jpg

Success!

So why couldn't mmud post his picture here - it was only 2000 wide, and slightly smaller than the image I'm posting.

Judy, I just tried to post another picture 3000 x 2250 5.04 MB Wouldn't post!

Just changed the compression 20 "steps" and had no problem posting (originally said percentage but it actually lowers the MB more than 20 % so I have called the increments "steps)

3000 x 2250 1.12 Mb
3000 x 2250a.jpg
Going to see if I can find an upper limit.

3000 x 2250 4.40 MB won't post

3000 x 2250 3.6 MB
3000 x 2250c.jpg

I lowered the compression one "step" from the pic above which came to 3.5 MB when I saved and it posted. I bet the upper limit is 4.0 MB I can't get it to exactly 4.0

This might explain why Scott's photos won't post! The better your equipment the bigger the photos are! When I went from my older camera to my newer one I noticed the MB increased a bit - but It didn't affect my posting because I always post all my pics at 1250 - 1280 pixels wide so my MB were well within range (and I don't have top notch camera.)

Scott’s picture he posted before but couldn’t post earlier today is 2000 pixels wide and under 1.5 MB - and I couldn’t post it the first time I tried but have several times since then. I’ve asked him to try again - so we’ll see what happens.

The forum is configured to refuse pictures above 4 MB - but I can’t think what is kicking in when a picture is more than 3000 pixels wide.

And I see Scott can now post his picture!
