Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
Welcome to the Swan Lake Eagles thread for the 2018/2019 season. The eagles had a nest near Swan Lake for many years but that nest fell down a few years ago. Two years ago I had a tip from an ex-co-worker that a pair of eagles was perching in the trees in his yard. Last fall I heard from this same person that the eagles were building a nest in a yard across the road from his house. When I visited the area I found the beginnings of a nest. I have seen the eagles perched in trees nearby overlooking Swan Lake several times in the past few months but sadly they did not produce any young. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a successful breeding season next year
Please feel free to post your observations and photos here if you visit their nest area.

Re: Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
I went to Swan Lake this afternoon and checked out the eagle nest that the eagles built earlier this year. I didn't see any new sticks in the nest but both eagles were perched side by side in their old nest tree enjoying the gorgeous sunshine

I drove around the area of the nest tree today on my way to Swan Lake but did not see any eagles. Later while standing at the lookout area at the lake I spotted an eagle in the old nest tree.

Re: Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
I saw both eagles today perched in different trees on the Swan Lake property. As I was driving home I saw one flying towards their nest area so I went to investigate. Both eagles were in the nest rearranging sticks, and flying around the area breaking off sticks and taking them back to the nest. Keeping my they will decide to produce young in the spring. I'll post some photos later.

Eagles bringing sticks and branches to their nest that they started building over a year ago, but they didn't produce any young this past spring.

Viewing the nest from a different vantage point. The male was busy re-arranging branches.

The male hopped up onto the branch beside the nest a few times before flying off to gather more sticks.

Both eagles were perched in their old nest tree when I drove by on my way to Swan Lake this afternoon. I didn't have time to stop but took this photo from the lookout area near the Nature House. It is not a good photo and has been cropped considerably. They were gone when I drove by on my way home.

Re: Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
I saw one of the eagles perched in the old nest tree this afternoon on my way to Swan Lake. While I was photographing it the other one flew in and landed right beside it. They chatted back and forth to each other for a few minutes then settled down, surveying their territory. I heard both of them squawking and saw a few large birds flying around over the nest area while I was at the lookout area at the lake. By the time I got there on my way home they had gone off chasing the other birds. Photos coming later.

Re: Swan Lake Eagles, Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
One of the Swan Lake eagles was perched on the usual lookout tree near the Nature House yesterday. The other one flew over while I was standing on the floating boardwalk and headed to the nest area. On my way home I saw one perched up high in the old nest tree but didn't have time to stop for a photo.
