A peahen and her chick at Beacon Hill Park on Nov. 7th.
This cheeky squirrel ran up my leg as I was trying to photograph it
then it jumped up into the flower bed and stood there staring at me.

I was able to get out to Goldstream Park last Friday, the day after our big wind storm! The Nature House and washrooms were closed due to power outages and it was a frosty morning but a very invigorating adventure! There were lots of Stellar's Jays around the feeder near the Nature House and lots of eagles of various ages perched in trees along the river.

Goldstream Park cont'd.
A juvenile bald eagle was chasing a great blue heron across the river. It landed on the railing on the metal bridge then flew down to the side of the river. It foraged for awhile before flying off when some people with a dog came along.
There were quite a few juvenile bald eagles in trees along the river.

Re: Southern Vancouver Island Wildlife - 2018/2019 Season
It was a cold crisp day at Esquimalt Lagoon on the last day of 2018. I was hoping the resident Trumpeter Swan would be there but he was a no-show. I saw the resident eagles and lots of ducks.
I photographed this different looking duck but I don't know what species it is. I asked a few birding friends and they said it looked like a domestic, possibly an escapee from a farm

Re: Southern Vancouver Island Wildlife - 2018/2019 Season
I had a wonderful day yesterday at Goldstream Park with my 2 birding friends. We specifically were looking forward to seeing the American Dipper and the Golden Eagle and were thrilled to see both.
We heard the little Dipper chirping away on the rocks across the river by the bridge. It stayed there for a long time.
The Golden Eagle was flying along the rocky area of Mount Finlayson then landed on a rock further down
Finlayson Arm. It was quite far away but I managed to get one pic.
We saw approx. 6 Common Mergansers on a gravel bed by the metal bridge. This one was scratching.

A few eagles at Goldstream Park yesterday. There weren't many as the wildlife and birds have pretty much picked the salmon carcasses clean.

We watched this eagle for quite some time before it flew towards the bridge where a gull was picking at a salmon carcass. It snatched the carcass then flew to a nearby tree to pick at it.

I found the Redhead duck at Beacon Hill Park today. It hopped up onto the path and wandered around with the Mallards and American Wigeons for a short while.
I recorded a short video and uploaded it to YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K0NI-iygi0

I visited the Redhead Duck again yesterday at Beacon Hill Park. He took a little break from swimming and diving and stood on a rock at the edge of the lake for a bit of preening in the sun.

It was a good day for me yesterday. I saw and photographed 2 new birds I haven't seen before. Managed to get only 1 photo of the Tufted Duck that has been hanging around with the Scaups and Buffleheads at Portage Inlet. I took 59 photos
The Tufted Duck is at the far left side of the photo.
I saw and photographed a few Red-breasted Merganser Ducks at Tower Point.

I saw & photographed some Barred Owls in Beacon Hill Park on Monday afternoon. There were 3 young owlets this season but I managed to capture only one. When the crows started harassing it the Mom flew over to protect it.
