Thank you, Irish Eyes. I've been looking for some info on the Hays family. We've had some pretty hot humid weather the past week so maybe the trail watchers were taking a break. It seems a little early for H8 to disperse, compared to the others but H8 was special. I guess this next phase is good for him, sad for us. :cry1: :brknhrt: He sure will be missed.

Sunday, 10/28/18

It appears that Mom and Dad Hays are building another nest for the new season. Check out "Eagles of Hays PA" facebook page for updates. He says it is approximately 100 yards away from the old nest in the sycamore tree. This new nest is deeper in the trees and harder to see from the trail. No word yet on if or when the camera will be moved.

Thanks so much Wish for letting us know .. I am not surprised .. I remember when they build that nest in a week or so after their nest blew down while Mom was incubating their first egg !

From FB

Eagles of Hays Pa added 8 new photos to the album: 10-28-2018.
10 mins ·
Very grey and dreary all morning again. We found the eagles perched together between the sycamore nest and the new nest area at first light. There were a few stick carries that is was still to dark to take pictures. The female grabbed a huge branch and carried it pretty far before losing it going into the new nest area. I guess when the do a fly by grabbing a branch you never know how much is going to break off. We saw a large bird fly over and through the nest area but was not sure what it was. It definetly had the silhouette of a eagle but not sure. A few minutes after that the male came out from the nest area and flew circles over the hillside. This continued for a good 10-15 minutes.

Hays and Harmar bald eagle nests collapsed, but the birds are rebuilding...

Two pairs of Allegheny County eagles should be home for Christmas.

The bald eagle nests at Hays and Harmar, viewed by thousands via mounted video cameras, collapsed or were otherwise abandoned in recent months. A spokeswoman for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania said no avian injuries occurred during the falls, which happened off camera when the nests were obscured by foliage and the video units were turned off.

The big birds, however, appear to be rebuilding their nests in spots close to the old ones.

“It’s not uncommon for eagle nests to fall. Over time, as the birds continue to add sticks to the nest, the weight can cause instability and the nests collapse,” said Rachel Handel, the Audubon chapter’s communications director. “The wood and sticks used in the nest can also rot, causing the nest to break apart.”

Audubon is waiting for the birds to finish rebuilding before determining whether and where cameras can be remounted, she said. The high-definition live-streaming cameras are powered by solar units that enable them to function without being physically touched by humans for months at a time. The Pennsylvania Game Commission, responsible for avian wildlife in the state, has been reluctant to permit installation or access to the cameras after the start of the January breeding season.

“Audubon’s goal with the webcams is to continue to provide the viewing experience we’ve all come to enjoy, while making certain that the birds’ needs and safety come first,” said Ms. Handel. “There’s a small window of time to install the cameras. We know how much people love to watch [the birds] and are working on solutions to make it happen again for the 2019 season.”

The Hays couple are rebuilding on the same steep hillside overlooking the Monongahela River about 200 yards downstream from their former nest, now disheveled and covered with vines. Construction is well underway. A bicyclist who recently passed the site on the Great Allegheny Passage said one of the birds has been seen sitting on the nest. It will be the couple’s fourth nest since they moved into the neighborhood in 2013.

In Harmar, the younger eagle pair have yet to make a firm real estate decision.

“[They] are presenting their own challenge by building in two different locations,” said Ms. Handel. “While they initially started building a nest slightly down [the Allegheny River] from the previous nest, they’ve also been observed building again in the same tree [they used] last year.”
