TERF04 (tracked 2/18/18-6/26/19)

Post by JudyB » Fri Nov 09, 2018 8:24 am

Opening up this topic to track TERF04's coming's and going's. Comments/observations welcome!

Link to TERFO4's Tracking Map

TERF04 is an adult male captured on 18 February 2018 at Vancouver Landfill in Delta, about 20kms east of Vancouver as the eagle flies. He was banded by Myles Lamont and is sporting a yellow band with black letters A over 1. Keep an eye out for him!

I use the Animal Tracker app on my phone to follow a couple of other eagles on the east coast, and regularly look at the last seen locations for our 5 eagles - and today TERF04's symbol was blue - meaning an update within the past week! I think it's been about 2 months since he checked in, so this is very exciting. Here's where he is now (or was on Wednesday, to be more accurate - I think he's still in an area with spotty coverage):

A closer look (the yellow dot is the most recent uploaded location):

Switching to satellite view and backing out just a bit - it does look like a fairly remote area.

I'm not that good at using this mapping program, but when I changed the date at the top to October 3, it gave me an earlier location for TERF04 in an area he had been active earlier in the year:

I did find a point for early September - but I know it's been a while since we've seen him, and I hope he'll start checking in more often now.

I agree, Marg - and hope that means we may be hearing from some of the other wanderers soon!

I checked the Animal Tracker app on my phone this morning and found that TERF04 has checked in a few more times! Here's a screen shot from my phone of his travels in the last week (the app normally shows data for the last 2 weeks, but he had been "off the radar" until November 7):
20181113_TERF04.jpg

The dots show when he uploaded data, and the long straight line from when he left Prince of Wales Island until he checked in near Prince Rupert was a 4-5 day stretch when he didn't upload data. If I'm reading the map correctly, he's now back in BC - and I think he's heading in your direction, Marg!

It's called Animal Tracker, Marg, and I had it on my old Samsung Galaxy phone, so I know there's a version for Android phones. There are lots of different bird species (and I think some animals) being tracked - and a lot that have stopped transmitting, which is sad to see because too often that means something happened to them - but it is interesting. I originally downloaded the app to follow osprey (the person I was aware of who was tagging them is no longer doing that) - but I can also follow Freedom, the eagle that was released from the Carolina Raptor Center a couple of years ago.

I'm a bit late posting these, but TERF04 checked in again on November 17. This is his route from the 7th through the 17th (it clicks bigger):
20181117_TERF04b.jpg

This is the screen on my phone after I've clicked on his blue icon to see which eagle it is, and before I clicked the Activity link to see where he's been. I'm including it mostly because it shows him passing by the area where TERF01 was when she last checked in on September 16. Her icon is the light gray one (the color indicates that no data has been uploaded for more than a month).
20181117_TERF04a.jpg

I looked back and TERF04 was out of touch for about two months, from September 10 to November 7 - so I do think some of the others will check in again before too long. David Hancock says that the northern rivers are freezing over now, which should send them back to places with more cell towers - fingers crossed.

Added - the blue icon near Port Rupert is a snow goose that is being tracked by someone else - the phone app has info about all sorts of birds that have been tagged by dozens of researchers; I don't think I clicked the dark gray icon further north - it may be another snow goose, but there are more species than they have icons, so some of them share. The dark gray color indicates that the bird hasn't uploaded date in more than a week, but it's been less than a month since the last data. I think icons are removed from the map when there's been no data for a year.

TERF04 is now hanging out on the Squamish River, between Brackendale and Eagle Run!

The above maps have been from my Animal Tracker phone app (and all click bigger); this map is from our website and shows TERF04's path to date since he was tagged on February 18, 2018 - he's almost back to where he started!

TERF04 has been in Brackendale for about a week now. Here's his arrival on November 29:
20181206a_TERF04.jpg

And this image from this morning shows where's he's been all week. The dots are where he was when he uploaded data - and there's no fast way to tell how long he spent in any of the areas, though with the Animal Tracker phone app I used for the first two pictures, you can slowly move the time bar at the bottom back and forth to get an idea of where he was perched, especially if he was in one spot for two consecutive data uploads.
20181206b_TERF04.jpg

This image is from the map on our website (https://hancockwildlife.org/our-project ... ge/terf04/) and shows a different perspective of the area where he's been spending the most time.
20181206c_TERF04.jpg

David Hancock told me that he thinks TERF04 will be heading to Harrison Mills soon, to join the thousands of eagles feasting on salmon there. Now David does know his eagles - but I'm not so sure. The Squamish River may not be as rich a river as the Harrison - but I think maybe TERF04 is finding plenty of food right here! Stay tuned....

Added - I just used Google Maps to look more closely at Brackendale, and there appears to be some sort of body of water between the farm on the left and the major part of town on the right in the bottom map - and that's where TERF04 appears to have been spending most of his time. I was wondering what he was doing there - and now I know!

Hi again, everyone! December got busy - funny how that happens. :%: I was still checking in on TERF04, and taking screenshots from time to time - but I never got anything posted - so here we go!

December 27 - TERF04 was still hanging out in the Brackendale area:

And January 2 - look where he is!

On January 9 I did a bit of research - and found that he set out on his journey south on December 31st:

He arrived quite quickly somewhere near Chilliwack:

And set out to explore the area:
