Pandora/Lafarge Nest Neighborhood

Pandora/Lafarge Nest Neighborhood
(formerly the Lafarge Nest Neighborhood & More!)

January 26, 2023 - This thread has been brought forward from Archives to accommodate a number of photos of eagles taken over the past 4 years in the Pandora/Lafarge neighborhood. The majority of them are of eagles on what is believed to be one of the Pandora/Lafarge eagles' perch trees located in Trinity Park, on Wall Street, just down the hill from their nest. Some of the photos are, no doubt, of the Pandora/Lafarge pair but since we can't be sure which eagles are the Pandora eagles, as opposed to the visiting eagles, the photos will be housed in the resurrected Lafarge Nest Neighborhood thread.

With thanks to Shari Whittaker (new forum member "Wallstreetshari") who kindly gave us permission to post her wonderful photos beginning here!

Lafarge Nest Neighbourhood & More - 2018

This thread has been created to help Lafarge nest viewers identify the various locations covered by the camera, on or nearby the Lafarge Cement Plant site, that Pa and Lady perch on while watching and defending their territory.

Covered is the Lafarge site and perching spots included in the cam rotation, the Pandora nest in relation to the Artificial nest as viewed by the camera and the Church Cross the eagles perch on in relation to both the camera view and the Pandora nest,

Also there are maps and pics to show the location of the Lafarge site in relation to eagle nests located in North Vancouver just across Burrard Inlet.

ABBREVIATIONS USED WHEN POSTING IN THE LAFARGE DISCUSSION THREAD (For a more comprehensive and pictorial description of the locations of the abbreviations click HERE).

Note - some of us use the following abbreviations in our posts to describe the different perch points the Lafarge eagle pair use:

AN (Artificial Nest): The AN is a nest on a pole that David Hancock built and installed as backup for the dying tree where the eagles were nesting. The nest tree has since been destroyed in a wind storm; however, the eagles have not used the AN for nesting as yet - but they enjoy perching there, and we're hoping....

SA (Square Arch): We're not quite sure what the proper name is, but this is the structure at the edge of the inlet on the end of a large pipe coming from the Lafarge plant. We don't know if it's used for loading barges with finished product or unloading raw materials, but we sometimes see barges there - and we almost always see lots of birds perched on the top railings of the structure (when the eagles are not present that is!)

DE (Distant Evergreen) & LCE (Left Closer Evergreen): There are two small green spaces located east of the Lafarge plant site. After the VersaCold plant was demolished the green spaces became visible and we could see that the eagles were using two evergreen trees (the DE and LCE) as perch trees. The DE is located in the green space farthest from the camera. The LCE is located in a clump of trees in the green space closest to the camera and to the left of the DE.

**LB (Little Building): Formerly a favorite perch site:
The LB, was probably the roof access for the large VersaCold complex. When we first saw the eagles perched on its roof and before we pulled the cam back for a wider view and saw the huge building underneath, it looked very much like a little building.

**NOTE: The (LB) disappeared with the demolition of the VersaCold plant. The last of it came down on February 24, 2017.

The Versa Cold Storage Complex is located east of and adjacent to the Lafarge Plant site. It is scheduled for demolition.

After the Lafarge nest came down during a wind storm in October of 2014, the Lafarge pair continued to defend their territory. About a month later our HWF members discovered they had moved back to their original nest which they had abandoned in 2007. It is located in a huge evergreen tree on private property on the corner of Kamloops and Pandora streets approximately 7-8 blocks southeast of the Lafarge site.

What the cam sees
- Because of the cam's two dimensional viewpoint, it mistakenly "perceives" Our Lady of Sorrows cross in between the nest and St David's cross. However, it is actually located two blocks further east and two blocks south of St. David's.

Our Lady of Sorrows church: (Click all pictures 2x for bigger)
Our Lady of Sorrows2.jpg
Our lady of Sorrows church cross is located south and east of St Davids church. It is far enough east that the camera’s two dimensional line of site perceives it as if it is north of St Davids when in fact it is actually south east.
Cam line of site.jpg
Seen in scaps of the Lafarge pair sitting on the St. David's cross. It is to the left of St. David's church in the scap.

The Lafarge pair have several neighbours across Burrard Inlet they share the waters with as well as the Hastings pair. This map gives an idea of why Pa and Lady are so vigilant in defending their territory.

This photo of the Lafarge site was taken in North Vancouver. The vantage point was on a street (approximately one block in distance) behind (north of) the Esplanade Artificial Nest in North Vancouver looking southeast across the Burrard inlet towards the Lafarge site.

To record date of first activity observed indicating an egg may be in the nest: (2016 Season)

By: Annemie (offline) on Thursday March 24, 2016 @03:41PM

Hi JudyB, Stim. Mini, Gemini and all friends of these eagles

At 2:53 pm Pa and Lady were sitting on the rim of the Pandora nest looking intensely inside the nest bowl.
Lady made movements that showed that she was moving something around in a very defined area in the nest bowl.
Pa sitting right next to Lady paid close attention to what she was doing.
When Lady was done, she sat down in the nest exactly were she had worked on something and Pa flew off.
That was at 2:57 pm.
Stan and I were wondering whether Lady and Pa have an egg now. :chin:

Ps. Stim, Mini and JudyB thanks for the kind words.

Happy Friday everyone,
Just looked out my window and saw Pa on a west branch of Pandora tree,I didn't think Lady was in the tree, but she was, she was just down in the nest and I couldn't see her very well. Then she got up and I realized she was there. She stood up and moved about a bit and then hunkered back down again. I'll head oner to the nest later and check things out.
