[Thanks, Bev! ~JudyB]

Welcome to the Decorah, Iowa bald eagle cam's 2018/19 season! HWF would like to thank the RRP/Raptor Resource Project for bringing us this extraordinary look into the life of this pair of bald eagles.

Weather Report
https://www.theweathernetwork.com/us/we ... wa/decorah

The nest is in the central time zone.

The Decorah Bald Eagle cam was set up and is maintained by the Raptor Resource Project, a non-profit organization for the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. The cam first went live in 2008 for the 2009 nesting season, and is viewable 24/7 during the nesting season with the help of an infra-red camera. The exact location of the nest is not given out to protect the eagles but it is located near a fish hatchery providing this family with an almost unlimited source for fish although we see many different types of prey come in to the nest to feed the eaglets. This is one of the most productive eagle nests - they've laid three eggs each year since we started watching in 2009, and in all but one year, all three hatched and fledged (two eggs hatched in 2016 and both those chicks fledged).

We will be seeing something different this year - Dad Decorah disappeared last April during a bad storm, when the chicks were less than 3 weeks old - and Mom was courted by a new male, who helped guard the territory while she was focused on successfully raising her three chicks. We suspect that male will return this fall, and with luck we will get to see them working on the nest and becoming a bonded pair - and it will be interesting to see how that all works out. Please post your observations - different perspectives help us learn so much more! Note - the male who was with Mom last summer was initially being called UME for Unknown Male Eagle, and later was named DM, for Decorah Male.

Work in progress !

History

Please see the History post in our 2018 thread for the story through 2017. The only real update is that D27, one of the 2017 eaglets who was caught after fledging and fitted with a transmitter in August 2017, is still exploring and transmitting as of October 2018 when I'm typing this (map here - you may need to click Submit for the most recent data). It is interesting to see where she's been exploring.

2018 was a year of changes, and a testament to what a strong and determined eagle Mom Decorah is. There was a bad snowstorm coming on April 18, and were on the nest together feeding the chicks in the morning before the snow started. As the snow started piling up around the nest, Mom kept the chicks warm and dry (little D31 was just 2 weeks old); Dad was perched nearby, keeping watch, as it began to get dark, and came to the nest to give Mom a break. The sun was out the morning of the 19th, and Mom fed the chicks what looked like an at least partly frozen fish from the pantry. Mom was away from the nest briefly from time to time, and was feeding the chicks regularly. We didn't see Dad (though it was hard to tell who was who with some of the brief visits), and Mom was calling from time to time without a response. On April 20 the Raptor Resource Project confirmed that Dad appeared to be missing, and that they had people on the ground looking for him, in case he was injured. The snow melted quickly, and Mom was able to spend some time perched above the nest, taking a break. Another male eagle was seen in the area; there is no way to know if he was involved in Dad's disappearance, but he did not seem to pose a threat to the eaglets.

to be continued (note to self - I'm up to page 24 - viewtopic.php?f=112&t=161&start=690#p37639 - in my review of last year's activity)

Note: I hope to be back soon to finish the history. The brief summary is that Mom did a fantastic job raising her three chicks, and they all fledged successfully; she was helped by being very near a fish hatchery, which meant she could bring back food for her growing family very fast, reducing the risks little chicks face when left alone. Once the chicks were bigger, I believe she did spend some time sitting with the new male, but need to continue my review to find out when that happened.

A quick summary of the adults at this nest, with thanks to the Raptor Resource Project; there's a lot more information in their blog of January 6, 2019.

We first began watching Mom and Dad Decorah in 2009, but the nest had been observed before that, and Mom Decorah joined Dad in the fall of 2007, when she was appeared to be 4-1/2 years old; that would mean she hatched in 2003, and will be 16 this spring - in the prime of eagle life.

Dad was last seen on April 19, 2018

UME1/DM showed up soon after that, and was there until early July

DM-1 replaced DM in early July, but the change wasn't immediately obvious because the interactions with Mom were similar and the eagles weren't being seen as much as during the active nesting season; he was in the area until mid September.

UME-2/DM2 replaced DM-1 in mid-September; we don't know what happened to DM-1 (or to DM, for that matter); DM2 has become an active partner with Mom as they prepare for the 2019 nesting season, and we are hoping the pair will raise their first chicks this year.
