Tracking TERF27a/Bee - Annie’s eaglet

Post by JudyB » Sun Aug 13, 2023 8:21 am

Link to TERF27a's Tracking Map (note - dates starting August 12 are Bee's - the earlier dates are from TERF27, the first eagle to wear the tracker; we'll have two separate maps soon.)

I’m setting up this thread for Annie’s eaglet who was in rehab at OWL and was recently released with a tracker.

Please feel free to post updates. I don’t see a new icon in Animal Tracker yet so his tracker is probably not yet in Movebank. It will probably be something higher than TERF31 but no guarantee. I should be home sometime Tuesday - will try to add the rest of the info then or Wednesday. We do know that the eaglet was named Bee by the local monitors, and he is male.

I have learned that Bee received tracker TERF27, which had previously been worn by a male eagle who was taken to OWL in mid-July, and had the tracker returned to us (I suspect he didn't survive, but haven't confirmed that). Information on the original wearer of the tracker is here.

I'm still gathering information about Bee, who will be designated TERF27a for the tracking program, though we'll probably just call him Bee most of the time. With big thanks to the North Shore Eagle Network, Sally/NSEN and photographers K. McCormick and ECeaglevideo, we now have some great pictures of Bee in the opening post, and ECeaglevideo also provided two videos of his release, used with permission, all rights reserved:

This is the release, shown from several angles and speeds:

This one shows Bee perched in a tree, and provides a good look at his tracker.

We will post a new map that just shows Bee's dates, but that may take a day or two to organize. Until then, I've put the link to the combined map for both eagles in the first post.

August 12th. After a wobbly start visiting other eagles territories and hanging out at the top of a Unnecessary Mtn where there is no food for a young fledge, Bee has headed up north quickly, leaving August 17th arriving 5 days later August 22nd, to what looks to be a good salmon bearing stream just south of Kitimat, BC.
See photo below caught by a neighbour friend while still near natal nest. Tracker visible on his back.
Route map until August 22nd where he has stayed to the present August 28th 11am. And 2nd route map showing positions of both Annie and Harbour Sun (two blue dots almost side by side) with Bee's route in orange further inland.

A friend just pointed out that Bee is hanging out near the aptly named Eagle Bay Provincial Park! East side of the Kitimat Arm (Douglas Channel) 25km's south of Kitimat. Two creeks draining into the bay support spawning coho, pink and chum salmon. Access to the park is by water only.

Thanks for sharing the good news, NSEN - I guess Bee was waiting for his map to be updated before checking in! And while I do know that fledglings do this every year, it still amazes me that he's almost to Alaska - the border to the Panhandle is the black line just above Prince Rupert.

The tracker started its journey at Hancock Wildlife near the US border - but the trip from North Vancouver to Eagle Bay was all Bee's work - and would be 610 km/380 mi if Bee had flown in a straight line, which is a long first journey!

Here's a closer look at the beginning of the trip - he was released at the west side of West Vancouver (and I'm pretty sure David and Myles didn't drive across the water to get there - the mapping software jumps from point to point at times, which also means we don't get to see all the other inlets Bee may have explored on his way North).

And here's a closer look at where he was yesterday when he checked in:

Safe travels, Bee, and have a wonderful time up north!

Awesome Bee! Thanks for beautiful photos and news about Bee's travels. So interesting to see places he located along his way north. Adding satellite maps of Bee's journey - view as of August 28th for relative distance and geographic features - mountains and water ways.
August 29th update - farther north, Bee's location along the river at Kitamat - industrial area, but river likely good source of salmon...

Hooray!

Thanks for keeping on top of all of these maps, Lynne - wonderful to see more of the eagles checking in, even though it is taking a while to see where they've spent the last few months.
