Tracking TERF28

Post by JudyB » Fri Jan 13, 2023 10:55 am

Link to TERF28's Tracking Map

We're still waiting for more info on TERF28; she was released from OWL (the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta BC) on December 31, 2022.

Update - March, 2023

Myles has added more information to the master banding/tagging records; here's what we now know:

BAEA22-59 - TERF28
Banding Date: December 30, 2022
USFW Band #: 0829-01884 (right leg)
ID: Blue marker X over 2 on its left leg
Rescued: At UBC (northwest corner of greater Vancouver) after fighting with another eagle
Age: adult
Eye color: light yellow
Sex: female

And there are pictures (they click a lot bigger)!

January 15, 2023
We don't have our tracking map for TERF28 set up yet (hopefully soon!) but I was able to find data for January 11 (when he or she started to transmit) and January 14 on the Animal Tracker app on my cell phone:

This looks to me like a corner of the big landfill in Delta, which is a favorite hangout for a lot of eagles!

Unfortunately for them, many landfills are encouraging people to compost their leftover food rather than toss it in a landfill. As I understand it, there are places that take food waste and transform it to a nutrient rich fertilizer (that may not be the right word, but something you can safely add to soil to return the nutrients to nature to be used again rather than burying it in a plastic bag for a really long time). Anyway, the process sounds good for the earth (and all the creatures living on it) - but in the short term, it's causing a bit of trouble for eagles who were used to getting leftover chicken and fries as part of their diet.

Looking at where TERF28 headed after being released from OWL, I suspect there's still food for eagles to be found at the landfill.

Thanks, Lynne!

It looks as if TERF28 spent a couple of days in that general area, and was heading back by January 26.

The next day he or she was near a golf course, and stayed there for a few days.

And by the 31st, they were back near the landfill.

And she's still there as of 10 am this morning. :)

February 16th update
It appears that TERF28 has a favorite location - just beyond southeast corner of the landfill.

Thanks, Lynne! It's nice to see TERF28 making another trip to the University Endowment Land - I worry a bit when eagles spend too much time hanging around the landfill.

And I see I have not finished the opening posts for TERF28 - will do that once I post this.

For now, I'll note that she is an adult eagle who received her tracker while she was at OWL recovering from a fight with another eagle. Myles noted that she was picked up at UBC - so she may be interested in the area, but not exactly welcome there.... :%:

Myles also gave me access to a lot of photos from banding/tagging - hopefully I'll also have a couple of pictures of her to add as well.

It's been a while since I checked in on TERF28, and it looks as if she's stayed in the same general area since she got her tracker in late December 2022. She's an adult who was rescued after a fight with another eagle, and I don't know a lot more about her than that. Here's a map of her travels in the last six months:

It looks as if she has several favorite spots near the landfill in Delta:

And here's a look at the area near Capilano Lake where she traveled frequently.

It looks to me as if she has generally stayed within about 35km/20mi of what appears to be her base near the landfill. My personal guess (not an expert) is that she's not nesting this year. I'll try to check with David and Myles to see if they have any additional information.
