Re: Tracking TERF17
Thanks for your reports, Lynne - she does seem like a busy eagle!
This is a bit off topic, but I'll get to the connection in a minute. One of our newest eagles with a tracker is TERF26/Annie who is an adult female who has traditionally nested in West Vancouver, in the general area of Lighthouse Park - and one of the observers who watch her nest asked if she was the only nesting female we are following.
I don't know the answer to that question (and will check with David Hancock since he has data on a huge number of nests) - but as I looked at our list of eagles with trackers, it occurs to me that TERF17 might indeed have a nest. We know she's almost 8 years old now, and she did seem to spend quite a lot of time in a fairly small area last spring, during the time when eagles generally have eggs and little chicks.
Because she has spent so much time in a fairly small area, it's hard to see through the cluster of lines to find a pattern on our map. However, there is another program that has an option we don't - the organization Movebank, which actually receives all the data from thousands of animals around the world and converts it to a format we can post as a map on our website, also has an app for phones and tablets called Animal Tracker - and it allows you to see just the data for the past two weeks (or to see the data for the past year). I've had the app on my phone for years, so here are two screenshots showing TERF17's movements for the last two weeks, one zoomed in closer than the other (they click bigger).
No way to know for sure unless there are local observers, but she does seem to be spending a lot of time in a fairly small area as egg-laying time in BC approaches.
