TERF15/Croydon Jr (8/18/21-7/28/22)

Link to TERF15's Tracking Map

TERF15 was tagged and banded on August 18, 2021, at the OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society facility in Delta, BC. I'm hoping to get more information soon, but I believe he was one of two chicks raised this year by our tagged eagle BACA03 and his mate.  Both eaglets ended up on the ground, and TERF15 was rescued and taken to OWL.  (I think I heard that the other one was later seen flying, but I need to check that as well.)  He was checking in fairly often for a week or so, and we haven't heard anything from him since then.  Being ever the optimist, I'm hoping that's because he headed north and is somewhere with more salmon than cell towers - and if we're lucky, he'll be heading south again soon, so we may get more updates.

Update - he began checking in regularly on October 21, after being out of touch for almost 2 months.

Added - TERF15's parents were the eagles on the Croydon Nest before the tree was vandalized and they had to move (details here) - so we're calling TERF15 Croydon Jr.

BAEA21-47 - TERF15
Banding Date: Aug 18 2021

Banded: Blue marker K over 4 on its left leg
Rescued: July 10 in Surrey, taken to OWL

Sad News - Croyden Jr died in July 2022 - more details here; his tracker was recovered so may be redeployed at some point. Thank you for sharing your travels with us, handsome young eagle. :brknhrt:

Here is the map of TERF15's initial travels, and I think he ended up in an area where there are lots of places to hide from cell towers, so I'm hoping we'll hear from him again soon.

I don't have official confirmation yet, but think he is male - and whichever he is, this shows that he last checked in from somewhere near Squamish, which is an area where his father BACA03 also goes for summer break (and sometimes disappears from the cell towers for a while).

TERF15 Has Checked In!

TERF15 was banded and tagged at OWL on August 18, having been rescued after ending up on the ground, and checked in from a bit further north on August 24 - and then nothing.

Until now.

Here's where he's been the last two months:

He was in Squamish on August 24.

Two days later, he was quite a bit further up the coast.

Here's a closer look at the area where he spent a couple of days - Fang Peak is 280 kilometers or 174 miles from Squamish.

Pulling the map back a bit, you can see that the area where he spent most of the time is south of Bella Coola and Bella Bella, so only about half way to Alaska. Several of this year's fledglings flew up to Alaska (which totally amazes me) - so it's interesting to see one taking a different path.

He stayed in that area through August 29, then moved a bit further north and west from August 30 through September 22. Here's a closer look at that area (which is the top part of the circuit on the picture above).

There is a small river there, though I didn't see its name. Here's a closer look at part of it in Map view.

On the 23rd he crossed the Rivers Inlet and ended up where the light orange dot is. Lots of inlets - but not a lot of evidence of people living there, which may be how he stayed out of touch for so long.

He stayed there until September 28 - I zoomed in to show that he appeared to be exploring an inlet or some body of water.

He went most of the way around the loop out to Watson Island on the 29th, then took a couple of days to go from near Greaves Island back to the dot where the paths cross, arriving back there on October 2nd.

He stayed in the area where the lines meet until October 13, then started moving slowly east; here's where he was on the 17th.

And then he started heading back down the coast; by this afternoon, he was near Madeira Park, south of Powell River - and getting close to Vancouver!
