TERF14/Jpeg (tracked 8/4/21-1/2/22)
Link to TERF14's Tracking Map
TERF14 is a nestling who was rescued with sibling TERF13 from thick vegetation after their nest near Boundary Bay, BC, fell down. The young eagles were taken to OWL (the Orphaned Wildlife rehab center in Delta, BC) on June 1st, 2021, where they were banded and equipped with trackers on August 4. They were both released on August 6, 2021. TERF14 has a blue band with silver letters on his left leg with the characters K over 3 and is listed as male.
BAEA21-46 - TERF14
Banding Date: Aug 4 2021
USFW Band #: 1098-03613 (right leg)
Banded: Blue marker K over 3 on its left leg
Rescued: near Boundary Bay, taken to OWL
Age: 5-6 months
Eye color: Dark Brown
Sex: Male
Added September 3, 2021 - I have learned that Alain-Pierre ("AP") was given permission by OWL to name TERF13 and TERF14. He noted that his photo background helped him pick the names: TERF13 is Pixel and TERF14 is Jpeg.
Here are two photos of TERF14 just before the release, with thanks to Alain-Pierre Hovasse.

It was August 11 before we began to get tracking data from TERF14/Jpeg - and he had discovered the Vancouver Landfill in Delta. Here's a map that shows his travels from August 11 through August 22 (please ignore the pink line heading North - we'll get to that in a minute).
And then Jpeg stopped checking in. We know that young eagles can fly long distances - and we know there are lots of valleys and wild areas with no cell towers - so we've been hoping for the best.
And happily it worked - we've heard from Jpeg - and he's in Alaska!
And he saved his data (at least most of it) so when he found a cell tower, he showed us what he'd been doing for the last 3 weeks:
To make the video below, I opened his interactive map page https://hancockwildlife.org/our-project ... ge/terf14/ and clicked the date at the top to open the calendar, then recorded as I clicked through the days; the pink dot on the map shows where he was that day. The green area with the gray border at the upper left is the start of the Alaskan Panhandle.
Jpeg Heads for Alaska (3 weeks in 65 seconds)

Re: Tracking TERF14/Jpeg
Thanks for posting, Lynne - I've been wondering how our youngsters are doing, but am having one of those "not enough hours in the day" issues happening.
I haven't yet managed to post, but I did make a map that shows Jpeg and sibling Pixel so we can (I'm ever the optimist) see how their paths intertwine. Link to the joint map is https://hancockwildlife.org/our-project ... page/sibs/ - and initially it was Jpeg who spent some time out of the reach of cell towers, and now it's sibling Pixel who hasn't checked in lately - but I'm hoping we'll get to see them both for several years, until the trackers finally stop working.
