Re: Tracking TERF10/Parksville

I'm putting this together for a project that the folks working with the French Creek Eagle Preserve are organizing; I've put this information in the second post as well, where I'm trying to summarize the travels of the various tagged eagles - but I may make that more of an overview as time goes by, and figured it might be useful to have a more detailed summary of TERF10's first journey north.

Summary of Travels (last updated November 9, 2021)
  • June 7 - banded and received tracker
  • July 3 - possibly took first flight from the tree
  • July 4-25 - explored the area around the nest tree, with a couple of flights of more than a kilometer, though most were shorter.
  • July 26-27 - flew from Parksville to Strathcona Provincial Park - a bit over 100 km
  • July 27-28 - flew from Strathcona Provincial Park to Harbledown Island - about 108 km
  • July 29-August 1 - explored the area around Telegraph Cove (which was fairly close to Harbledown Island)
  • August 2-13 - remained based at Telegraph Cove, but made a couple of trips further up the island
  • August 14 - crossed an inlet from north of Port Hardy to north of Sullivan Bay, reaching the mainland
  • August 15 - arrived at King Island, a little south of Bella Bella (another flight over 100 km)
  • August 18 - arrived at whatever is south of Gil Island (northwest edge of Princess Royal Island?)
  • August 19-29 - explored that area and the part of Gil Island across the channel
  • August 30-September 2 - made a loop up to McCauley Island, reaching their most northerly point (so far) the morning of August 31
  • September 2-9 - back across from the southern end of Gil Island
  • September 10-11 - brief excursion to Price Island, then back to the area across from Gil Island, where they stayed until September 22
  • September 22-23 - flew a bit less than 100 km down to Susan Island
  • September 23-30 - continued heading southeast down the coast, doing a bit of exploring along the way
  • October 1 - reached the point north of Sullivan Bay where they crossed over from Vancouver Island and continued southeast, crossing the water above Johnstone Strait on a longer diagonal flight, passing near Harbledown Island on October 4 and checking in from Gold River on October 5
  • October 5-8 - flew from Gold River down to Tofino then inland/East to an area south/inland from Dashwood (less than 20 km Parksville)
  • October 8-22 - explored the area between Dashwood and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park
  • October 23-24 - flew to the Nanoose Bay area, passing within a few km of the nest but apparently not entering the territory they explored as a fledgling (one can't be sure because data is not recorded continuously; they were southwest of the nest out beyond Errington at 8:02 am on the 23rd and southeast of the nest a bit north of Englishman River Regional Park (or the name on the map) at 1 pm; Lynne has some great posts for October showing the timestamps for various locations that show this very well)
  • October 24-30 - in the Nanoose Bay area
According to Google, the distance from Parksville to Kitkatla, just above the furthest north point in TERF10's travels so far, is 652 km (or about 400 miles, for those of me in the US).

It is now November 9, so I suspect TERF10 has gone somewhere with little or no cell service, and with a bit of luck, will be checking in again soon.

(As an aside - I've always accepted "you are" as a perfectly reasonable way to speak to one person or a group of people, and I know that "they are" is becoming more common as a way to speak about one person (or eagle) when the gender is irrelevant or unknown, rather than using "he or she" - and it definitely simplifies sentence structure here - but it still feels a bit awkward to me; I hope it makes sense as you read it.)

A request to those who know this area better than I do - if there's a better way to describe some of the places TERF10 has explored, please let me know. Thank you.

December 16th update
10:00am - TERF10/Parksville continues in same area. Seems like he's working the mouth of the river/tidal zone and using the adjacent trees for shelter/perching.
