Tracking TERF10/Parksville

Post by JudyB » Mon Jul 26, 2021 4:04 pm

Link to TERF10's Tracking Map

TERF10 is a juvenile bald eagle who hatched in 2021 in a nest in Parksville on Vancouver Island. They were banded on June 7, 2021, receiving USFW band number 0709-06729 and a more readable blue band on the left leg with the characters L over 4. The likely gender was not recorded in the data I've seen so far.

We have some more information about TERF10 - apparently their nest is in a big cottonwood tree in the middle of a subdivision, and after the local residents pointed out that there was an eagle nest there, the developer allowed the tree to remain and gave up a small parcel of open land around it - and the eagles have continued to successfully fledge young from the nest. For those who are watching our French Creek bald eagle cam, the nest is about A 10-minute drive south of the French Creek nest. I don't have all the details yet, but have learned that Myles was working with an organization to band the eaglets in the nest, and was able to put a tracker on one of the siblings - TERF10.

BAEA21-23 - TERF10 (ECCC Data)
Banding Date: June 7, 2021
USFW Band #: 0709-06729
Captured: Parksville, Vancouver Island
Age: pre-fledge
Banded: Blue marker L over 4 on its left leg
Sex: not recorded

I haven't found a picture of TERF10 yet, so here is a picture of the Surrey Reserve eaglets when they were 8 weeks old; I am guessing that TERF10 and their sibling were banded at about 8 weeks old, because the data suggests that TERF10 fledged about 4 weeks after receiving the tracker, and 12 weeks old is a reasonable average age for fledging, though it can happen any time between 10 weeks and 14 weeks or later.

Summary of Travels (last updated November 9, 2021)

In/Near the Nest (2021)
  • June 7, 2021 - banded and received tracker
  • July 3 - possibly took first flight from the tree
  • July 4-25 - explored the area around the nest tree, with a couple of flights of more than a kilometer, though most were shorter.
Heading North, Exploring North Vancouver Island (2021)
  • July 26-27 - flew from Parksville to Strathcona Provincial Park - a bit over 100 km
  • July 27-28 - flew from Strathcona Provincial Park to Harbledown Island - about 108 km
  • July 29-August 1 - explored the area around Telegraph Cove (which was fairly close to Harbledown Island)
  • August 2-13 - remained based at Telegraph Cove, but made a couple of trips further up the island
Upper Mainland Coast (2021)
  • August 14 - crossed an inlet from north of Port Hardy to north of Sullivan Bay, reaching the mainland
  • August 15 - arrived at King Island, a little south of Bella Bella (another flight over 100 km)
  • August 18 - arrived at whatever is south of Gil Island (northwest edge of Princess Royal Island?)
  • August 19-29 - explored that area and the part of Gil Island across the channel
  • August 30-September 2 - made a loop up to McCauley Island, reaching their most northerly point (so far) the morning of August 31
  • September 2-9 - back across from the southern end of Gil Island
  • September 10-11 - brief excursion to Price Island, then back to the area across from Gil Island, where they stayed until September 22
  • September 22-23 - flew a bit less than 100 km down to Susan Island
  • September 23-30 - continued heading southeast down the coast, doing a bit of exploring along the way
  • October 1 - reached the point north of Sullivan Bay where they crossed over from Vancouver Island and continued southeast, crossing the water above Johnstone Strait on a longer diagonal flight, passing near Harbledown Island on October 4 and checking in from Gold River on October 5
~in progress~ (2021)
  • October 5-8 - flew from Gold River down to Tofino then inland/East to an area south/inland from Dashwood (less than 20 km Parksville)
  • October 8-22 - explored the area between Dashwood and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park
  • October 23-24 - flew to the Nanoose Bay area, passing within a few km of the nest but apparently not entering the territory they explored as a fledgling (one can't be sure because data is not recorded continuously; they were southwest of the nest out beyond Errington at 8:02 am on the 23rd and southeast of the nest a bit north of Englishman River Regional Park (or the name on the map) at 1 pm; Lynne has some great posts for October showing the timestamps for various locations that show this very well)
  • October 24-30 - in the Nanoose Bay area

I'll update the first post when I learn more, but it looks to me as if TERF10 may have been tagged before fledging and either returned to a nest or in some sort of flight cage. There was almost no movement for several weeks, then movement in a fairly small area through July 16.

This may be where TERF10 was banded and received the tracker - the date is correct.

And if my theory is correct, he or she then went back to the area in the center, and eventually began making longer and longer trips away from the nest - the point at the bottom is from July 25.

Added November 9, 2021 -
I've learned that Myles was given permission to tag TERF10 and a sibling while they were still in the nest (I don't have the details of the project - just that TERF10 was banded and got a tracker before fledging. Banding happened on June 7, and based on the map locations, I suspect they started branching around June 24, and fledged July 3 or 4 because the dots from those two days were further away from the central nest location, though still in the grove of trees that surrounds it. TERF10 then appeared to spend another week or so mostly in and around the nest, then on July 11 uploaded data from a block or so away from the nest. Please note this is all speculation on my (JudyB) part - and someone who analyzes tracking data professionally might have a different interpretation.

On July 26 or 27, it looks as if TERF10 was ready to go - and flew half way up the island in one day.

And then kept going - here's the check-in from the next day, July 28.
20210927_017.jpg

Some of the exploring further up the island was done between July 29 and August 11, but on August 11, TERF10 was back near Telegraph Cove and Alert Bay.

And then we stopped getting updates....

Happily the story does not end there! TERF10 finally checked in a day or two ago and showed us where they'd been for the last month and a half:

We'll try to fill in some of the details in a day or two, and I'm hoping to get more info about the Parksville Eagle Preserve to add to the opening post - but for now, I'm happy to see that TERF10 is doing eagle things, and exploring the places where fish are easiest to find for newly fledged young eagles.
