TERF09's Tracking Map

TERF09 is a mature male eagle who arrived at OWL - the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta BC - on November 9, 2020, with injuries to his legs and wings from fighting. He required medical attention and was banded on January 15, 2021, and released soon afterwards; his tracking data started posting on January 18, 2021.

Added - here are pictures of TERF09 taken by Myles Lamont of HWF on January 15, 2021; I believe this is when he got the tracker (both click much bigger).

And here's a closeup taken from the second shot (also clicks bigger) - the hood helps keep the birds calm while they're being handled.

Summary of Travels (January 15 - June 30, 2021)
  • TERF09 received his tracker at OWL (the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta BC) - on January 15, 2021; he arrived there November 9, 2020, with injuries to his legs and wings from fighting.
  • For the next 5 months, he mostly stayed in the Delta/Surrey area, making brief trips in various directions, but not going much further than 40 km/25 mi from the Delta Landfill
  • He started heading up the coast on the afternoon of June 21st, passing by Squamish a few hours later.
  • He made good time, arriving near Bella Coola around 8 pm on June 23rd; Bella Coola is about 450 km/280 mi up the coast from Delta.
  • TERF09 spent the next week along the Bella Coola River, between the town itself and Firvale, 30 km to the east.
  • His final data upload was 8 pm on June 30th, a bit west of Bella Coola, near the edge of the North Bentinck Arm (an inlet from the ocean that connects with the Bella Coola River). He was a full adult and had been flying reasonable distances and checked in a couple of times earlier that day - so it seems likely that his tracker failed and he may still be happily flying around. But we'll never know for sure unless someone sees an eagle with a blue band with silver letters H over 6.

We haven't gotten the complete story on this eagle yet - but it looks as if he may have been released near the Golden Ears Provincial Park, which looks to be a bit beyond Maple Ridge (reminder - I'm not from BC, so please feel free to provide additional information) - this is where he was when his tracker started reporting on January 18.

And as an adult eagle who may be familiar with the area - it looks to me as if as soon as he'd gotten his bearings, he headed toward the big landfill in Delta, which is a great winter buffet location for eagles.

I'm not actually sure how much of the green area is related to the landfill, and what else might be in that area - does anyone know?

This is the satellite view with tags turned on, and zoomed in a little more.

This is a closer look at some of the other areas where TERF09 has been spending time - I wonder if he's into golf?

Same map, satellite view.

It will be interesting to see if he nests somewhere in this area, or if he heads north at some point.

Catching up quickly, it looks as if TERF09 stayed in the general Surrey/Delta area until June 21st when he started heading north.

He did a bit of exploring in this area

and then arrived near the left turn to Bella Coola the evening of the 23rd, and spent the next week or so in the Bella Coola area:

We haven't heard from him since June 30th, and being the optimist that I am, I think it's more likely that something happened to the tracker or that he's hanging out in a wilderness area with more salmon than cell towers, than that something happened to him. He is an adult male who has done this before - and with a bit of luck we'll hear from him later this year when he comes out of the mountains or wherever he is.

Nothing new to report, and I'm still going with the possibility of a tracker failure, though we won't ever know unless someone spots him.

There is one unusual thing about TERF09's data that I want to note for the record. Our maps come from an organization called Movebank which maintains tracker data on thousands of creatures around the world, and TERF09's map shows data through June 30, 2021, as documented above:
20220101_003.jpg

However, when I go to the Movebank site for the data on our tagged eagles (https://www.movebank.org/cms/webapp?gwt ... individual) and click on TERF09, they only list the data points through February 25, 2021:
20220101_004.jpg
20220101_004.jpg (27.61 KiB) Viewed 1696 times

There are generally minor differences between the time of the most recent data in the two places - I think because the data page is in a standardized time (like Greenwich Mean or UTC) and the maps show the local time on the observer's computer (I think). I just checked TERF02 and the data page is 5 hours ahead of the map page, which is the difference between Eastern time (where I am) and Greenwich Mean.

Anyway, for some reason, the data points after February 25 don't appear to be recorded on the data sheet, but they were still showing up on the map.

I've added another picture of TERF09 and a summary of his (far too brief) travels while the tracker was working to the second post above.

Here's the cropped version of the new photo that I'm using for the website:

Hoping that you're happily raising a family somewhere - and that someday we'll hear from someone who noticed your band and wondered who you are.
