Tracking TERF08

Post by gemini » Mon Mar 08, 2021 5:25 am

Link to TERF08's Tracking Map

TERF08 was tagged and banded on December 6, 2020, at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, BC.  He appeared to be male based on measurements taken at the time of banding; his USFW band number is 0709-02000 and he has a more readable blue band on his left leg with the characters H over 4.  TERF08's age at banding appeared to be about 18 months, so he likely hatched in the spring of 2019.

BAEA20-37 - TERF08
Banding Date : Dec 6, 2020
USFW Band #: 0709-02000 (right leg)

Summary of Travels (last updated March 13, 2023)
  • Note - so far, TERF08 seems to spend some of the winter in greater Vancouver and much of the spring, summer and fall north of Dawson's Landing (which is a bit south of Bella Bella) and south of the Alaskan Panhandle, so I'm using those as section dividers for this summary.
Greater Delta/Langley Area (2020-2021)
  • Received tracker December 6 2020 at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, BC
  • After being released, TERF08 headed towards Langley, where it looks as if there might be some farms and open land, and stayed in that area through December 24th.
  • When he checked in on the 25th, he had crossed the border to Lynden, Washington, and appeared to be at the Northwest Washington Fair and Event Center, though a closer look at the map shows a band of trees, which may have been more interesting than whatever was happening at the event center. He did a bit more traveling "south of the border" including a stop at Lummi Bay below Neptune Beach on the 29th, which may be the farthest south he went since he got a tracker; he went across the Strait of Georgia to Point Roberts on January 1st, 2021, and then headed back to Langley on the 2nd.
  • Back across the border in the general vicinity of Aldergrove Regional Park on January 9 and 10, then began heading mostly eastward, ending up near the Vancouver Landfill in Delta where he mostly stayed for a couple of months; he did spend some time near the shore of Boundary Bay and exploring some inland areas not related to the landfill, as well as making a quick trip to Point Roberts, Mayne Island, and Birch Bay, Washington, on the 26th and 27th and another little excursion to the George Reifet Bird Sanctuary and Garry Point Park on February 8th and 9th - but he spent most of his time fairly close to the dump through March 12.
  • And then I think he decided it was time to go - he headed up the coast, checking in from Madeira Park on the 13th, Stuart Island on the 14th and 15th, arriving near Bella Bella on the 18th.
Between Port Hardy and the Alaskan Panhandle (2021)
  • Most of TERF08's exploration from March 18 through November 20 was more or less along the coast and some major inlets between Rivers Inlet to the south, past Hartley Bay, and up towards Terrace on the Skeena River to the north. The distance between Rivers Inlet and Terrace is about 330 km/205 mi, which is not a long distance for an eagle to fly, and he was going back and forth quite often, so rather than trying to track his travels, I'm going to mention a few places where he spent more than a day or two, and not go into detail about the flights back and forth.
  • TERF08 spent several days at what looks like a little bay on the west side of Swindle Island, from March 29 to April 7 (with a brief side trip); he stopped there a couple of other times.
  • He arrived near Lakelse Lake on April 12th and was there through the 16th; he also was there May 11-15, June 9-18 (with a side trip north to the Skeena River on June 15), July 9-11. July 29-August 5.
  • One of his excursions to the west side of the core territory was out towards Campania Island and the ecological reserve near there on May 21-24.
  • He visited an area on the east coast of Hawkesbury Island from June 16-22.
  • After one of his visits to the area near Lakelse Lake, he flew north to the Skeena River near Remo and was there from August 6 through September 8 with a few little excursions (generally under 10 km) along the river.
  • By October 3rd, he was back down to Denny Island near Bella Bella, and stayed there through October 17
  • He arrived at the Koeye River on October 19 and explored the river and associated Koeye Lake through November 7
  • He was back to Denny Island on November 9-10, then back to the Koeye River/Lake November 14-19
  • He then started a leisurely journey south, pausing near Beaver Cove November 25-December 2.
Greater Delta/Langley Area (2021-2022)
  • After leaving Beaver Cove on December 2, 2021, TERF08 took a few days to fly down the mainland coast, passing Powell River and Sechelt, and arriving at the landfill on December 6. He stayed in that area until February 12, 2022, with some quick excursions out to Boundary Bay and over to the area near the Fraser River.
  • By the evening of February 12, he had crossed the Fraser and was on Gambler Island, heading up the coast.
  • By the morning of the 15th, he was on Stuart Island (a bit north of Campbell River), a bit over 200 km/125 mi from the Fraser River and the landfill. By 1 pm on February 17, he was on the mainland north of Port Hardy and heading north.
Between Port Hardy and the Alaskan Panhandle (2022)
  • He passed near Rivers Inlet on February 18, and reached the northern end of Sarah Island on the 21st; he stayed in that general area until March 4.
  • By March 6 he was a bit north of Kitimat, near an offshoot of the Kitimat River, and by the 8th he was a little south of Lakelse Lake, and stayed there until March 21st.
  • By March 25, he was near Hawkesbury Island, then made a loop down almost to Swindle Island, arriving back near Hawkesbury Island on the 31st, and then back to the area near Lakelse Lake from April 1-5 (with a quick trip over to the Skeena River on the 4th).
  • He did quite a lot of traveling from the 6th to the 15th, down as far as Swindle Island and back up as far as Kitimat, then spent the 16th through the 20th near Ocean Falls, and the following week a bit further west, and sort of north of Bella Bella.
  • TERF08 was a bit further north for a few days, near Sarah and Roderick Islands, and then north a bit more - and on May 8th was back up near Lakelse Lake, and in that general area through the 18th, with a few side excursions.
  • By the 20th, he was back down near Sarah Island, then up near Gribbell Island May 27 - June 4, followed by a bit of back and forth, ending up near Lakelse Lake June 9-14, then back down to the area around Gribbell Island June 17 - July 4, then further east for a few days, then near Kitimat for a couple of days, ending up back near Lakelse Lake July 14-22, with at least one trip over to the Skeena River near Remo.
  • After going back and forth a bit more, on July 29 he flew over to the Skeena River west of Ecstew where he'd been briefly in April, and was there until August 5, when he began moving east up the river towards the Remo area; while he was there, he flew almost 30 km towards the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, the closest he's come to the Alaskan panhandle since we began following his travels.
  • He visited the Skeena River southwest of Old Remo for several weeks, from August 6 - September 16, with at least one multi-day excursion down the Lakelse River partway to Lakelse Lake.
  • TERF08 started moving south on the 17th, and by September 24 was back in the area around Hawkesbury Island; he spent a few days there, then continued moving further south, arriving in Bella Bella by October 7th.
  • He spent a few days there, then down to the Koeye River on the 12th, staying until the 20th with a side trip on the 18th-19th to check out Elizabeth Lake, a bit to the south.
  • After that he went up to Denny and King Islands for a few days, then back to the Koeye River from October 26th through November 5th.
  • He then went east to Owikeno Lake for a few days, and began moving south, reaching Jackson Bay by the 11th and staying there through the 24th. He then began his journey south in earnest, and arrived in Delta on November 29th.
Greater Delta/Langley Area (2022-2023)
  • After arriving near Delta on November 29th, TERF08 visited Maple Ridge, then explored Silvermere Lake off the Fraser Lake near Ruskin from December 1-10 before a quick trip to Washington on the 11th and 12th, then on to the Langley area for a few days.
  • Delta area, near the landfill, December 20-25
  • Langley area, December 28 - January 11, 2023
  • Delta area, January 12 - February 23
  • Sechelt, February 24-26, then a leisurely flight up the coast, arriving at Port Hardy on March 5th.
Between Port Hardy and the Alaskan Panhandle (2023)
  • TERF08 left Port Hardy on March 6th, and arrived at Denny Island the next day.

Here's an overview of TERF08's travels in the last three months - it looks as if he spent quite a bit of time near the landfill, did some exploring in the general area - and has recently decided to head north!
20210317_003.jpg

Taking a closer look at where he's been:
20210317_004.jpg

When you use the link in the first post to go to his map, it initially comes up in Satellite view, which gives an idea of the sort of terrain he finds interesting; I'm posting the Map view because I find it easier to see towns I know - and to see the border between Canada and the US, which shows us that he did spend a bit of time in Washington State. The area with the largest concentration of orange right on top of the "a" in Delta is the landfill - which is a very popular eagle buffet.

I don't know how/if this works on a phone or tablet, but with a desktop computer, if you hover over the lines showing where he's flown, the "grabby" hand you use to move the map occasionally changes to a hand with a pointing finger - and clicking that usually makes a dot showing where he was when he uploaded data. I'm not sure if the time is local time or some standard time like Greenwich Mean or if it shows the time on my computer - but this does show that he visited Mayne Island off the coast of Vancouver Island on January 26th!

Continuing with the initial travels....

Another way to see where he was when is to click the tiny calendar icon at the top of the screen, then click a date. This shows he was still in the Delta area on March 12.
20210317_006.jpg

And was heading north on the 13th.
20210317_007.jpg

And was quite a ways further up on the 14th.

Continuing....

I don't know a lot about this area where TERF08 spent a couple of days - and would love to hear from people familiar with the area!
20210317_009.jpg

Here is a closer look.
20210317_010.jpg

And here's the same area in Satellite view with Labels turned on - looks like lots of trees for perching, and lots of little inlets that might have good fishing.
20210317_011.jpg

We haven't heard from TERF08 for a day or so, which is not unusual when an eagle is traveling as he or she may not be near a cell tower when it's time to upload data (and I will mention that they don't necessarily fly in these very straight lines - the computer generally draws a line between the points at which they upload data, so if they fly a long way between cell towers, it looks like a long straight flight, but probably isn't.

Stay safe, TERF08 - and let us know where you'll be heading next!

TERF08 has been very busy in the last few months! This shows where he was when I made my previous posts in the middle of March - and how much exploring he's been doing since then.
20210802_013.jpg

I just checked back to the first post, and we think TERF08 hatched in the spring of 2019, so he's almost 2-1/2 years old, and this is his third year exploring the world in search of salmon and other eagle delicacies.

Here's a bit of a closer look of where he's been since mid-March - you can see that he went right by Bella Coola, which is popular with some of our eagles, and also didn't go into Alaska (the border is the dark line just to the right of the box in the upper left that lets you switch between map view and satellite view - this is map view.

A closer look at the lower part of the area he's been exploring.

continuing....

This is sort of the middle part.
20210802_016.jpg

And the top part, where he is now.
20210802_017.jpg

And this is the satellite view - not that easy to read the date, but the last data update was yesterday, August 1st.
20210802_018.jpg

And a different perspective - this is from the Animal Tracker app on my cell phone, and shows his travels for the last 2 weeks, to make it easier to tell where he's been recently:

TERF08 has checked in a number of times, then quiet for awhile. Trying to backtrack from today I see previous location on September 9th at Lakelse Lake - popular area :D (TERF10 was near this area)
then out of touch until recently showing up further south
October 7th - on Denny Island
