Loki checked in last night, and she's still in the same general area south of Nanaimo.
20210106_004.jpg

A closer look.
20210106_005.jpg

And a little closer, with Terrain turned on.
20210106_006.jpg

I had wondered if she had visited the United States (which has different cell tower frequencies, so she wouldn't be uploading data - and from the map it doesn't look as if that's the case - but there actually don't seem to be any data points between December 25 (below) and where she was when she checked in last night - the straight line is the tracker assuming she flew from one point to the other, but we really don't know where's she's been for the past 10 days, unless she uploads additional data today or tomorrow.

Loki has checked in, and she's still in the same general area south of Nanaimo!
20210113_008.jpg

Zooming in closer:
20210113_009.jpg

Looking at that, I do sort of wonder if the Nanaimo River Hatchery includes a buffet area for wandering eagles.

Here's a little closer in Satellite view - wondering if the brown area is partly landfill - eagles do seem to learn early that food can be found at dumps.

Good to hear from you, Loki - and stay safe!

Thanks Judy; knowing nothing about that area, is it good fishing or a dumpster area? Water doesn’t seem to be close by.

Good question, Marianne - and I haven't got a clue. But I know some folks who live somewhere near there, so I'll see what I can find.

Announcement - we're updating the combined map to add new eagles and move those who haven't checked in for over a year to a history page - things may look a bit odd for a while, but Loki's personal map shouldn't change. I'm not making a general announcement because I think most of the people following the tracking check on Loki.

It looks as if Loki took a day trip (actually maybe an overnight) to Galiano Island.
20210125_002.jpg

Here's a closer look:
20210125_003.jpg

As you may know, when the line has a bend, that's usually a place where data was uploaded so there's a time stamp for that like the one above; I don't know if the time is local BC time, my computer time (which is eastern) or standard greenwich mean time - but I'm reasonably certain that it's consistent. And the lower bend has a time stamp of January 22 at 16:47 - so about a day earlier, meaning she spent a day in that general area (and may have wandered around more than we can see - it appears that the tracker isn't constantly recording her movements - just sending a "postcard" from time to time showing where she is at that moment).

Anyway, here's the area in satellite view with labels.

And yesterday evening, she was back at the area south of Nanaimo where she's been hanging out:

Here's a wider view - I'm going to share them both on Facebook and see if I can find out more about the area.

I googled this

Visit beautiful Nanaimo, British Columbia. A vibrant harbour city just 90 minutes from Victoria and only 3 hours from Tofino on beautiful Vancouver Island.

Looking forward to what you find out on Facebook.

We will keep an eye out for Loki. Very interesting work you guys are doing!!!! Every year we have 100's of eagles hanging around the hatchery and river area. I see the last tracking info was January 26th, so we will keep checking back and see if we can figure out where she specifically likes hanging out if there is another update.

I did post on our hatchery facebook page this information and asked the public to notify us if they see her. We have lots of people walking the trails daily.

Thanks so much for joining the forum and providing this report, NanaimoRiverHatchery!

And wouldn't you know it - Loki checked in last night - and it looks as if she may be moving on! She's now visiting Salt Spring Island, further down the coast:
20210204_004.jpg

Here's a closer look.
20210204_005.jpg

And the Satellite View with Labels:
20210204_006.jpg

We don't know if she'll stay in that area, or head further south and possibly hop across the islands to the mainland - or she might head back to the area near the hatchery, like she did after her little trip to Galiano Island a few days ago. Stay tuned! :)

Loki is on the move again!
20210206_011.jpg

It looks as if she did a bit of exploring on Salt Spring Island, then continued down Vancouver Island yesterday:

And is now almost to the southern end of Vancouver Island:

Here's a closer look at where she is now:
20210206_013.jpg

And the satellite view shows there are lots of trees around.
20210206_014.jpg

No clue what she'll do next - but I will remind people that her tracker doesn't usually work with cell towers in the US (they're a different frequency) - so if she decides to visit Port Angeles, we probably won't hear from her until she's back in Canada.

Continuing....

I knew she was a smart young eagle - it looks as if she's found another salmon hatchery!
20210210_012.jpg

And it's possible that the brown areas are part of a landfill - so maybe the eagle equivalent of surf and turf!
20210210_013.jpg

Another wider look.
20210210_014.jpg

I think she's halfway to Oregon - and I know we have eagles from Channel Islands who visit BC - but I've never heard of a BC eagle who intentionally flew to California - maybe she'll be the first!

(Note: eagles on the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California were pretty much wiped out by DDT, and the Institute for Wildlife Studies was involved in a long-term (and ongoing) project to bring bald eagles back to the islands. Part of that was importing young eagles from places with lots of eagles - like BC! So some of the Channel Island eagles have parents or grandparents who were hatched in nests in BC and taken as chicks to California to be released from hacking towers there. I'm a romantic at heart, so maybe Loki is hoping to meet some of her distant cousins. )

That is VERY cool! Thanks for the "heads up" Judy.
That's my stomping grounds. I've fished the Humptulips many times. She passed not far from my house after crossing the Strait and entering the US. I have a video of her "fludge" on my YouTube channel. Very cool indeed!!! :thumlft:

Thanks for chiming in, Bill - I was hoping we might learn a bit more about the area she's currently exploring. Here's another picture from yesterday, zoomed even closer to show the river.

As a reminder, I'm not sure if the time stamp is based on my local time, local time in BC, or something standardized like Greenwich Mean Time.

Loki checked in yesterday, and she's moved further north again.

Looking in a bit closer - it mostly looks as if there's not a whole lot to see around there, at least from a human perspective. There's presumably something of interest to her, since she stopped and is doing some exploring.

That is a good thought, Lynne - according to the weather forecast on the internet, it's 41F/5C in Clearwater, Washington, which is close to where Loki is - and there's rain forecast there for the next week or so, but not getting below freezing at any point. There's quite a bit of snow in the nest at Surrey right now.

Loki has checked in, and appears to be heading towards the coast:

Looking a little closer, you can see the little lines where she was the last time she checked in, before heading west.

Zooming in closer - it looks as if she's discovered the Salmon River!

No idea if there are salmon there now - but maybe?

Here's the same area in map view. (These all click bigger)

And - you can go to the map here - https://hancockwildlife.org/our-project ... ge/beta04/ - and zoom in and scroll around and see what else there might be to find around here!
