Update I should have posted in early June -

Happy news -TERF07/Arctic Gal checked in on May 5th after being off the grid since September 21st; her tracker had stored a number of data points, so we know at least some of the places she visited during that time.

Some sad news - TERF17 died on May 10; David Hancock was able to have her body recovered, but by the time that happened, it was too late for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. The tracker is being re-deployed as TERF17a - more on that soon.

I'll have a more thorough summary around the end of the month.

UPDATE - July 3 2023 - We have 15 tagged eagles who checked in during the last 7 days of June, and Loki/BETA04 checked in on June 12th, so 16 have checked in within the last few weeks.

We are adding two new eagles this month - TERF31 and TERF17a. I still need to set up their pages but they do have the links to their maps. TERF31/Harbour Sun is a nesting female with a territory close to that of TERF26/Annie. TERF17a is a young eagle who was tagged in the nest - and this may be a bit confusing because we reused the tracker that had been worn by an eagle who died this spring, known as TERF17; the individual maps show the correct eagle's travels, but the big map that shows where all our active eagles are actually shows where the tracker was on a given date, so it combines the travels of the two eagles.

In other news, TERF07/Arctic Gal was checking in from May 5-21, then went off the grid again; she's the one who summers in the far north and winters in Alaska, so she is off the grid quite a lot; she's had her tracker for more than 2-1/2 years, so it may also be getting weaker. The other eagle we've not heard from recently is TERF24, who was heading north on May 30, the last time she checked in; it's quite likely that she's hanging out in some remote area and will call home eventually.

I'll do a quick update to the "vacation/off the grid" list below

20230704_009.jpg

It's not unusual for some of the eagles to disappear for weeks or months, which does give me hope when someone stops checking in. Here's an update to the "vacation" schedule showing when they were out of contact:
  • BETA04 Loki - June 30 - November 6 & November 8 - December 23, 2022; (off the grid since June 12, 2023)
  • TERF06 - June 27, 2022 - January 2, 2023
  • TERF07 - September 22, 2022 - May 5, 2023 (off the grid again after May 21)
  • TERF10 Parksville - July 29 - mid January 2023
  • TERF11 Vanier - July 21 - October 26, 2022
  • TERF16/TEUS03 - July 29 - October 20 (off the grid again after November 7)
  • TERF19 - June 27 - December 1, 2022; December 7 - January 21, 2023; January 22 - February 14; March 14 - April 20;
  • TERF20 - November 9 - February 8; February 9 – March 9
  • TERF21 - May 27 - November 8; (off the grid after March 25)
  • TERF26 “Annie” - released August 22 with first check-in October 21

TERF16 hasn't checked in since November; she is almost 8, so odds are that she's doing fine. We also haven't heard from TERF22 since mid-August; she was tagged in May and appeared to be a full adult in her pictures - so I'm hoping she also has a home in a remote area and headed there after her time at OWL.

In the good news department, Myles has given me access to his tagging data for 2022 - and to a folder with lots of pictures from the tagging of the various eagles! I've updated the summary sheet above, and am continuing to work on the updates for each eagle, and I think almost everyone will have a picture when we're done! And they are all such handsome eagles! Added 7/3/23 - busy with this years eaglets at Surrey and a few other projects - hope to get back to this in a month or two.

UPDATE - August 2 2023 - We have 12 tagged eagles who checked in within the last week.

in progress - lots going on, so I'm not sure when I'll manage to complete it. ~JudyB

Here's the new list - I'll try to add a bit of narrative soon; it's likely that the eagles who stopped checking in are just in remote areas, or possibly that the trackers aren't working well when they are in Alaska. BACA03's tracker is very old for a tracker, so may have stopped functioning - there's nothing in his data to suggest there is a problem with him, though I'll try to check with David and Myles.

I'll do a quick update to the "vacation/off the grid" list below soon.

UPDATE - September 4 2023 - We only have 3 tagged eagles who checked in within the last week, and 6 more that have checked in within the past month. The good news is that this happens every year around this time, I think because a lot of eagles are on the move, and I suspect a lot of their prime salmon spots are not near cell towers. I'm not sure why, but we don't always get data from eagles while they're in Alaska - and quite a few tend to head up there in late summer and early/mid fall.

I'm afraid that we do have some sad news this month - TERF17a who was tagged as a nestling on June 15 was confirmed dead on August 3rd; Myles said a number of chicks died this year, perhaps because there are more eagles in some areas now than the food supply can support. We also lost TERF27, an adult male who was tagged in December 2022 and ended up at OWL in mid July; I don't have details on him, but Myles said he had likely died since the tracker was sent back to David Hancock. I have not yet moved them to the historical section - will do that soon. I did move TERF22 to the historical section - she's an adult who stopped checking in three months after getting her tracker in May 2022, so I'm hoping that was a tracker malfunction.

Fortunately we do have a bit of happy news - TERF27's tracker was re-deployed on a fledgling named Bee, who is one of this year's chicks from the nest of TERF26/Annie; Bee's tracker is designated TERF27a. All of the tagged eagles have pages with more information under Live Tracking - Comments, and their pages have links to their maps, as well as background information.

Here's the new list -

TERF07/Arctic Gal hasn't checked in since May when she arrived back in her far northern home territory; she's had a tracker since December 2020, so it's likely it's worn out. TERF21 also hasn't checked in for a while, but he was off the grid for more than 5 months last year, mostly in Alaska, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him back again later this fall.

UPDATE - October 7 2023 - We have 5 tagged eagles who checked in within the last 10 days or so, and one more that checked in at the beginning of September. We are seeing eagles returning to their territories on some of our cameras, but about half haven't checked in yet. Looking at the updates from fall 2022, it was early November when we saw a jump in the numbers.

All of the tagged eagles have pages with more information under Live Tracking - Comments, and their pages have links to their maps, as well as background information.

Re: Live Tracking - Recent Check-In Dates

Post by JudyB » Sat Nov 04, 2023 12:28 pm

UPDATE - November 4 2023 - Last month at this time, I had to report that only 5 of our tagged eagles had checked in recently - and the news is much better this month - 13 eagles have checked in since mid-October! This is similar to the pattern last year - and I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while.

BETA04/Loki and TERF07/Arctic Gal did not provide very many unique data points when they checked in so we don't know as much about where they spent the last few months as in previous years - but they both received their trackers in 2020, so it's not surprising that they aren't storing as much data when the eagles are in areas without good cell phone service. The points they did provide convince me that both are happily doing eagle things.

All of the tagged eagles have pages with more information under Live Tracking - Comments, and their pages have links to their maps, as well as background information.

Here's the new list -
20231104_001.jpg

It's not unusual for some of the eagles to disappear for weeks or months, which does give me hope when someone stops checking in. Here's an update to the "vacation" schedule showing when they were out of contact:
  • BETA04 Loki - June 30 - November 6 & November 8 - December 23, 2022; June 12 - October 23, 2023 (off the grid again since October 24, 2023)
  • BETA03 - August 11 - October 25, 2023
  • TERF06 - June 27, 2022 - January 2, 2023 (off the grid again since July 26, 2023)
  • TERF07 Arctic Gal - September 22, 2022 - May 5, 2023; May 22 - October 17, 2023 (off the grid again after October 17)
  • TERF10 Parksville - July 29 - mid January 2023 (off the grid again since June 30, 2023)
  • TERF11 Vanier - July 21 - October 26, 2022
  • TERF13 Pixel - August 2 - October 8, 2023
  • TERF16/TEUS03 - July 29 - October 20, 2022 (off the grid again after November 7, 2022)
  • TERF19 - June 27 - December 1, 2022; December 7 - January 21, 2023; January 22 - February 14; March 14 - April 20; (off the grid again since July 28, 2023)
  • TERF20 - November 9 - February 8; February 9 – March 9
  • TERF21 - May 27 - November 8; (off the grid after March 25)
  • TERF24 - July 12 - October 28, 2023
  • TERF26 Annie - released August 22, 2022 with first check-in October 21; August 17 - October 12, 2023
  • TERF27a Bee (Annie's eaglet) - September 1 - November 1, 2023
  • TERF31 Harbour Sun - August 19 - October 24, 2023

TERF16 hasn't checked in for about a year, so I'll be moving her record to the historical section next month; she is 8 years old, so odds are good that she's doing fine; she apparently is hard on trackers (this is her second) and also does get into fights (she got both trackers while recovering at OWL), but I'm going to assume the tracker stopped working. TERF21 also hasn't checked in for a while, but he was off the grid for more than 5 months last year, mostly in Alaska, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him back again later this fall. BACA03/Croyden Sr last checked in towards the end of June; his tracker was 4-1/2 years old at that point - and observers saw two large healthy eaglets in his nest in July - so I'm almost positive that he's fine and his tracker finally gave out; local observers are keeping an eye on his territory, and I'll post if they see him - and will also move his record to the historical section.

Added 11/4/23 - still working on this.

UPDATE - December 5 2023 (posted December 13 - busy month) - Two more wanderers checked in this month - TERF06 who had been off the grid since July 26 and TERF10/Parksville who had last posted on June 30! 9 of our tagged eagles checked in during the first five days of December, and two more had checked in during the last half of November. Four of the eagles who checked in during October have not checked in since then - BETA04/Loki, TERF07/Arctic Gal, TERF12/Hastings, and TERF20. Loki and Arctic Gal got their trackers in 2020, so it wouldn't be unusual if they had stopped working - though they may still surprise us!

It's now been over a year since we heard from TERF16, so I've moved her record to the historical section; she is 8 years old, so odds are good that she's doing fine; she apparently is hard on trackers (this is her second) and also does get into fights (she got both trackers while recovering at OWL), but I'm going to assume the tracker stopped working.

We also have not heard from BACA03/Croyden Sr since late June, and since he got his tracker in 2018, it's likely that it has failed. I'm also going to move his record to the historical section - it's only been six months, but he checked in quite consistently for four and a half years, so it seems unlikely that we'll hear from his tracker again (though I do check all the trackers once a month, just in case). There's more info about him here - viewtopic.php?f=95&t=366&p=704634#p704634.

I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while. TERF19 and TERF21 have been out of touch for quite a while - but I'm still hoping to hear from them.

UPDATE - January 7 2024 - TERF21 is our "comeback kid" this month! He had not checked in since March 25th, but arrived back on the map on December 22nd, in time to be home for the holidays! And actually, my flight of fancy aside, it looks to me as if he may be making his home on the islands off the Alaskan panhandle, and just coming back to BC for a few months in the winter. Unfortunately our trackers don't always report in when the eagles leave Canada, so we have gotten some data about where he's been for the last 9 months, but not as much as we have for those who check in more often. He hatched in the spring of 2021 and got his tracker in spring 2022, so he'll only be three years old this spring, with lots of time to explore before settling down. Lots more info about him here - viewtopic.php?f=95&t=622.

Ten of the 11 eagles who had checked in recently last month are still checking in regularly; the exception is TERF06, who last checked in on November 21st. TERF06 was inland from Seattle when she checked in, and has typically spent a lot of time south of the border. Some years we've had good coverage when she's in Washington and Oregon, and other years we may get less information. She hatched in the spring of 2020 and got her tracker that fall, so while most eagles don't nest until they are at least 5, a few do, and she may be looking at potential nesting sites. You can read more about her travels here - viewtopic.php?f=95&t=550.

As mentioned last month, four of the eagles who checked in during October have not checked in since then - BETA04/Loki, TERF07/Arctic Gal, TERF12/Hastings, and TERF20. Loki and Arctic Gal got their trackers in 2020, so it wouldn't be unusual if they had stopped working - though they may still surprise us! TERF20 has taken winter breaks before (see the "vacation list" further down in this post) and TERF12/Hastings was not far from the Alaskan Panhandle when he last checked in, so he may have decided it was time to do some exploring up that way, where tracker coverage is a bit sketchy.

I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while. TERF19 has been out of touch for quite a while - but I'm still hoping to hear from him.

  • TERF06 - June 27, 2022 - January 2, 2023; July 26 - November 7, 2023 (off the grid again since November 21, 2023)
  • TERF07 Arctic Gal - September 22, 2022 - May 5, 2023; May 22 - October 17, 2023 (off the grid again after October 17)

  • TERF20 - November 9 - February 8; February 9 – March 9 (off the grid again after October 23, 2023)
  • TERF21 - May 27 - November 8, 2022; March 25 - December 22, 2023
  • TERF24 - July 12 - October 28, 2023

  • TERF27a Bee (Annie's eaglet) - September 1 - November 1, 2023
  • TERF31 Harbour Sun - August 19 - October 24, 2023
In the good news department, Myles has given me access to his tagging data for 2022 - and to a folder with lots of pictures from the tagging of the various eagles! I've updated the summary sheet above, and am continuing to work on the updates for each eagle, and I think almost everyone will have a picture when we're done! And they are all such handsome eagles! Added 1/7/24 - still working on this.

NOTE: I am (still) working on the new page on the website which will have links to the maps for all the eagles we've tracked in what I'm hoping will be an easier to use format, with more details about their travels - I've done BACA01-BACA03, BETA02-BETA04, and TERF01-TERF08 - and hope to have the rest of the "TERFs" added eventually. Re: Live Tracking - Recent Check-In Dates

Post by JudyB » Mon Feb 05, 2024 4:24 pm

UPDATE - February 6 2024 - Good news! As you may remember, in last month's update I noted that four of our eagles hadn't checked in since October - and all four are checking in again now! Thirteen of our eagles with trackers have checked in within the last week, and another two checked in earlier in January. I'll add the recent times off-grid for BETA04/Loki, TERF07/Arctic Gal, TERF12/Hastings, and TERF20 to what I'm calling the "vacation list" further down in this post. I think Arctic Gal should get some sort of special notice - she's actually back at the landfill in Delta for the first time since she headed north in late February 2021, a couple of months after getting her tracker. You can read more about her here - viewtopic.php?f=95&t=551.

Nine of the 11 eagles who had checked in recently last month are still checking in regularly and BETA03, who last checked in on January 3rd, just checked in again today. TERF11/Vanier, who last checked in on January 11 is still off the grid; there's nothing in his recent posts to suggest an issue, but his tracker is getting older so may need more sun to recharge. TERF06 hadn't checked in since November 21st, but finally "called home" right after I originally posted this update; she typically spends a lot of time in Washington and Oregon, where the trackers don't always work - and her recent update was from near Portland, Oregon. TERF19 has been out of touch since late July - but I'm still hoping to hear from her.

I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while.

Re: Live Tracking - Recent Check-In Dates

Post by JudyB » Tue Mar 05, 2024 2:27 pm

UPDATE - March 5 2024 - It's been a great month for our eagles - all 17 of the eagles we have been tracking recently checked in during the last two weeks! This month's "comeback kid" is TERF19, who had been "off the grid" since July 28 until she checked in on February 10th.

And we have two new tagged eagles to track! I don't have all the data from Myles yet, but have started pages for TERF15b and TERF17a and with a bit of luck, I'll have their web pages with maps up later today.

I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while.

Added 4/3/24 - I just realized I made a mistake on last month's chart. On the February 6, TERF21 had checked in on February 3; when I did the update on March 5, I posted that TERF21 checked in on that day - and she didn't; she last checked in on February 21. (TERF20 checked in on March 5, so I likely had my eye on the wrong line while adding the dates to my chart.)

Re: Live Tracking - Recent Check-In Dates

Post by JudyB » Thu Apr 04, 2024 5:48 pm

UPDATE - April 4 2024 - As generally happens in the spring, more of the eagles seen to be spending more time out of range of cell towers - or at least we hear from them less often. Of the 19 eagles we're currently tracking, 10 have checked in within the last week, 4 more checked in within the last two weeks, 4 others earlier in March, and TERF21 most recently checked in on February 21. The closest we have to a "comeback kid" this month is TERF06, who was only off the grid from February 22 to March 7 - not long enough to put on the "vacation list." I did make an error in my post last month - I said TERF21 checked in on March 5, and he actually hadn't checked in since February 21 - and still hasn't, but he seems to spend a lot of time off the grid. TERF11/Vanier Park last checked in on March 7 from Washington State, and some of the trackers don't seem to work well with US cell towers, so we may need to wait until he's back in BC to learn where he's been lately. I should also add that TERF26/Annie's tracker hasn't checked in since March 11, but local observers are seeing her in her territory; they haven't been able to get a clear picture showing her tracker, but have seen it. Last I knew, she and her mate Sam had not yet laid eggs; I think this is later than usual, but there is definitely still time for that to happen.

I've updated what I call the "vacation list" further down in this post showing the times when various eagles were out of touch for a while.
