Thursday, October 28, 2021

It's been a bit over a month since we last checked in on BACA03 (who is now nicknamed Croydon Sr in honor of the Croydon nest where he and his mate raised their young until the tree was vandalized, with big cuts made on both sides, killing the tree and making it so unsafe it had to be taken down - more details in the opening post).

BACA03/Croydon Sr was in his territory in Surrey on September 21, and headed north again on September 24, heading toward the area around Iron Bay, where he stayed until the end of the month.

He made what seems like a leisurely trip back starting October 1st and ending up in his territory on October 3rd, then headed north again on October 4, and was back above Iron Bay by October 5th. He stayed there until the 8th, and was back in Surrey on the 9th. He was there through October 22nd, which is the most recent time he checked in.

It's now October 28th, and I suspect he's back up north where we don't generally get signals - so we probably won't know where he is until he heads back to Surrey again.

BACA03 checked in today and is back in his nest area. Map is very confusing - calendar and Movebank shows latest check in as Nov 1 and label over red dot shows Oct 31 17:01:27

I just checked the map - and I think I'm seeing the same dot gemini saw (I think they don't upload data more than once or maybe twice a day, though sometimes they upload a number of data points when they check in).

It's showing 20:01:27 for me - which makes me think that the map shows the local time of the person viewing the map - Maine is 3 hours later than BC.

I also checked the Movebank site and as gemini reported, it says November 1 at 1:27 am.

I'm pretty sure that Movebank uses Greenwich Mean time (or possibly Coordinated Universal Time - abbreviated UTC for reasons I won't try to explain - and similar enough that it doesn't matter which it really is for our purposes) for reports on its website so they are consistent for all creatures they track, no matter where the person viewing the data is.

Greenwich Mean Time is 4 hours ahead of Eastern time and 7 hours ahead of Pacific time while we're on Daylight Savings, and will go to 5 and 8 hours next week since we'll all be switching to Standard time but Greenwich Mean doesn't change.

I checked the map, located the most recent tracker dot, and got the October 31st 501pm time stamp -
BACA03/Croydon Sr was to east of Vancouver-Blaine Highway.

- I'm in Seattle, so same time zone as Vancouver/BC. Do you think this is correct for where he was at that time?

That would be my guess, Lynne.

Hi folks! When I posted on October 28, I mentioned that we hadn't received any data from BACA04/Croydon Sr since October 22, and speculated that he could have gone up north again - but once we got the data, it's showing he's stayed in his territory since October 9.

I'm wondering if the cloudy/rainy weather is partly to blame for the lack of updates towards the end of October.

Here's the most recent update - I think that means the data was from 8:01 pm (20:01) in my time zone in Maine on November 6, which would mean that he was there at about 5:01 pm pacific time on the 6th.

November 19th - BACA03/Croydon Sr tracker check this morning
9:01am - in mid territory
I wonder what conditions are like in Croydon Sr's neighborhood - there's been so much flooding in Vancouver and other areas

December 16th - 10:00am - BACA03/Croydon Sr continues in his territory
It gets challenging to find his tracker dot amidst the build up of tracker lines - he does seem to be loyal to his home territroy.

Catching up on BACA03/Croydon Sr's travels, it looks as if he stayed in the general area where Lynne had found him until December 28, when he went over to the area around the Delta landfill for a couple of days.

He was back over in the general area where he usually hangs out when he checked in on the 31st.
20220110_020.jpg

He stayed in that general area until his most recent data upload, which was on January 4th. I'm thinking the weather hasn't been that great lately, so he may be spending a lot of time perched in sheltering trees, where he wouldn't get as much sun as if he was out and about - so we may need to wait for a couple of sunny days so his solar tracker can recharge before he uploads more data. He's had the tracker for over three years, and most batteries seem to get less efficient over time.

As a different way of looking at this, here is a summary of Croydon Sr's travels from December 21 to January 4 from Animal Tracker, a cell phone app that allows you to follow our tagged eagles and a lot of other birds and animals.

And this is his travels for the past year from Animal Tracker:

August 8th tracker update - :woohoo: Croydon Sr goes for his August getaway!
He flew north for some mountain air - and by August 6th he had rediscovered the Squamish landfill.
August 7th - locations at the Squamish River
August 8th - 8am at the river
then eastward and by 11am he was at south edge of the landfill, in trees along landfill road
