Tracking BACA03/Croydon Sr

Post by JudyB » Tue Feb 12, 2019 12:09 pm

BACA03's Tracking Map

BACA03 was originally banded in 2009; he fell from his nest in June of that year and was hand reared at the OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society facility in Delta, BC, receiving his USFW band before his release in August 2009. He was recaptured on December 4, 2018, near 164th Street and 16th Avenue, Surrey, and received his tracking tag and a black/yellow band on his left leg with the characters C over 6. He hatched in the spring of 2009.

BAEA18-22 - BACA03
Banding Date: August 2009
USFW Band #: 0709-01987 (right leg)
Tracker and ID Band Date: Dec 4, 2018
ID Band: Black/yellow marker C over 6 on left leg
Captured 164th and 16th Ave, Surrey
Age: 5+ (banded as a fledgling, 9 years old when he got his tracker)
Eye color: Pale Yellow
Sex: Male

BACA03 is a recapture at Fergus Creek. Originally banded in 2009, fell from nest in June and hand reared at OWL and released in Aug 2009.

Added August 2020 - Observers report that he and his mate raised 2 chicks in 2020.

Added September 2021 - they had 2 eaglets in 2021; both ended up on the ground near fledging age and I think one was later seen flying; the other was rescued by OWL and was released with a tracker - see TERF15's page for more details.

Added October 2021 - Before establishing his current nest, BACA03 and his mate had a nest near Croydon Drive and 20 Avenue in Surrey - a large nest in a large tree where they lived for at least 8 years, successfully producing offspring. In the summer of 2018, it was discovered that someone had intentionally cut into the tree on both sides, killing the tree and putting it at risk of blowing over (more info and pictures here). The tree had to be taken down - and the eagles had to make a new nest. And that is how BACA03 and his mate came to their current location - and why we are giving him the nickname Croydon Sr. (Offspring TERF15 is Croydon Jr)

Added March 2023 - BACA03 and his mate fledged two eaglets again in 2022.

Summary of Travels (last updated January 20, 2023)
  • Received tracker December 4 2018 after being captured near 164th Street and 16th Avenue in Surrey BC
  • he nested in Surrey and made frequent visits to the landfill in Delta during the 2019 nesting season (I don't know if he raised chicks that year)
  • headed north on August 19 2019 and was out of touch until around September 21; he spent most of the time away along the Squamish River, about 20 km (12 miles) north of Squamish
  • he visited the area near his nest on September 21 - and on the 22nd he was headed north again; he only went about halfway to Squamish, and spent a week or so at the end of an inlet called Indian Arm, where it joins a river known as Indian River before returning to his home territory on September 29
  • BACA03 and his mate successfully raised two eaglets at their nest in Surrey in 2020
  • he headed north on August 19 2020; his first stop was near Upper Squamish, where he spent quite a bit of time the previous year along the Squamish River - but this year he headed further north the next day to Jervis Inlet near the town of Malibu and stayed there until August 25, when he headed back towards Upper Squamish
  • he stayed there for a few days, then moved down to the area above Iron Bay for a couple of days, and ended up back in his home territory on September 2nd.
  • he headed north again on September 5th, reached the area above Squamish on the 7th, then was out of touch for a couple of weeks; when he uploaded data around September 24 we found he'd been in some deep river valleys north of Upper Squamish, sort of where he'd been in 2019 but with some variations
  • by September 28 he was back in his home territory in preparation for the 2021 nesting season
  • he and his mate raised 2 eaglets in 2021; both ended up on the ground and one got his/her own tracker after being rescued, becoming TERF15 (I think the other one managed to get back into the air eventually but I don't have details)
  • BACA03 headed north on August 9 and was "off the grid" until September 21 when he returned to Surrey; he did upload data that showed he was in the same general area above Upper Squamish as in previous years
  • he was in Surrey on September 23; no new signals since then (it's now September 28), so I suspect he's back at his vacation river for a little longer
  • as we suspected, BACA03/Croydon Sr left for the area around Iron Bay on September 24 and stayed there until the end of the month
  • he made a quick visit back to his territory, leaving Iron Bay October 1st, arriving in Surrey on the 3rd, then heading back on the 4th and arriving above Iron Bay by October 5th. He stayed there until October 8, and was back in Surrey on October 9th.
  • He stayed in the Surrey area until August 5, 2022. I've checked with David Hancock, and learned that the pair successfully fledged two chicks again in 2022.
  • He took a quick break to the Squamish area August 6-13, returned to his territory, then headed further north around August 15, and spent about three weeks along the Kitimat River - the farthest north we've seen him in over three years of travels. He started heading south on September 17, pausing for a few days here and there, and ended up back in his territory on October 10.
  • As of January 18, 2023, he's pretty much stayed in his territory, with an occasional little excursion beyond he edges of the area where he spends most of his time.
Big thanks to forum member and Topic Assistant Lynne who has documented much of this. :thumlft:

Here are a few views of BACA03's travels since s/he was tagged. The first picture is from the interactive map on our website (link in previous post), and the second is from the Animal Tracker app I have on my iPhone.

The place on the left where s/he visits is the landfill; and perhaps there's a nest in the area on the right. I'm not actually from BC, but I'm pretty sure that the eagle's primary activity is in Surrey; White Rock doesn't extend that far inland, and is surrounded on three sides by Surrey.

And this is a closer look at the area where the eagle has been spending most of his/her time.

These three images show the eagle's activity in the last two weeks (an option in Animal Tracker); the first one shows the activity except for one trip to the landfill - so the eagle seems to be concentrating on this area, and finding enough food here that he or she doesn't need to go to the landfill.

This is a closer look at the area where the eagle seems to be most active.

And this is the same map showing what the area is like, rather than the location.

I've learned a bit more about BACA03 from David Hancock - he is a 9-year-old male who fell from his nest in June 2009 and was rescued and hand-reared by OWL. He was banded before being released in August 2009. I'm hoping to get more details soon - but from the tracking information, it looks to me as if he nested in Surrey and did a lot of his "shopping" at the Delta landfill:
20190920_002.jpg

Around August 19, BACA03 headed North - and disappeared from the map. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of the map when that happened - and fortunately, we now know where he's been!
20190920_004.jpg

I think his path ended at the turn just below the S in Surrey, and I'm sure he went by some cell towers after that, but I'm guessing by the time of his next upload, he was in a valley in a fairly remote area north of Squamish. Here's the area along the Squamish River where he spent his month's vacation; I switched to satellite view to show that there were lots of trees and mountains around.

Continuing BACA03's summer travels....

As of September 20, BACA03 was headed South again (the red dot is where he was when the tracker recorded his position for the day)
20190920_006.jpg

And he's now back in his territory - earlier than most, though that could be because he's young.

It looks as if BACA03 was just taking a quick break from the salmon to check on his nest - when he checked in yesterday (September 22), he was heading north again:

Here's BACA03's travels for the last two weeks (starting around September 17):

And a closer look at where he's been since September 29 - I think he's home!

Added August 27, 2020 by JudyB - As I started trying to compare BACA03's travels last summer with his activities this summer, I realized I wanted more information about where he spent the second part of his vacation. This map includes lines from 2020 because I can't easily avoid that, and shows that he was at the end of an inlet called Indian Arm, where it joins a river known as Indian River, and spent his time by the river (which probably had salmon running). It's the knot of red lines at the top of the picture, above the name Wigwam Inn.
20200827_004-from2019.jpg

It looks to me as if it's about halfway to the area along the Squamish River where he spent the first half of his vacation.

BACA04 has been spending a lot of time near his nest, but has also been doing some exploring in the past 2 weeks:

(Note - I don't know where exactly his nest is, other than somewhere in greater Surrey, BC)

Just wanted to mention that BACA03 is still doing great, and hanging out in his territory in Surrey, probably doing the same sort of work on his nest that we're seeing from the Surrey Reserve, Delta 2, White Rock and Harrison Mills pairs.

His activity looks like quite the tangled maze!

Here's a screenshot from the Animal Tracker app on my cell phone showing BACA03's movements in the last two weeks - easier to see where he's been than on the bigger map.

Not exactly relevant to BACA03's travels - but his nest is one of the many nests David Hancock and other local observers track, and this year he and his mate successfully raised two eaglets.

Last year, BACA03 headed north on August 19, 2019, and spent about a month in a valley north of Squamish, along the Squamish River; he was back in his home territory on September 21st (details in previous posts on this thread). But he didn't stay long - he headed north again; it looks as if he only went half as far that time, to the end of an inlet called Indian Arm, where he wandered around the Indian River which enters it there. He explored that area for about a week (probably getting more salmon) before ending up back in his territory on September 29.

So - let's see what he's been doing this year!

This is an overview of his travels in the last two weeks from the Animal Tracker app - I'm starting with that since it lets me show just the last two weeks.
20200825_BACA03.jpg

It looks as if he headed North on August 19 - just like last year! And his first stop was near Upper Squamish, where he spent quite a bit of time last year along the Squamish River. The red dot shows his current location at the date highlighted on the map - in this case, the 19th.
20200827_005.jpg

But perhaps the salmon weren't running there yet - because he headed further North the next day (how do eagles know these things??). You can see the red dot across from a place called Malibu.
20200827_006.jpg

And I need to take a break now - will continue with his journey later.

Continuing with BACA03's travels....

The body of water BACA03 was exploring is apparently called Jervis Inlet. Because he was moving around, I'll include a series of pictures.

August 21 - at the tip of the inlet
20200828_001.jpg

August 22 - near Malibu
20200828_002.jpg

August 23 - BACA03's furthest point North since getting the tracker (though I suspect he traveled more before settling down)
