Tracking TERF01

Post by Marg » Sun Apr 22, 2018 7:13 pm

Eagle Tracking

I think that this is exciting and was thrilled to hear that one of the eagles being tracked visited the Sunshine Coast and according to the map is here again. :) The eagle is TERFO1.

Yes, we ae looking at any eagles we see flying by or when we are out JudyB.
Today, I managed to capture a picture of the grey whale that has been around the area! I didn't know that I had a picture of it until I went home and uploaded my pictures. I had seen people quite a distance away looking at something in the water so took a picture. :D

Perhaps TERF01 has a nest. I'm experimenting with the google maps JudyB.
Any hints?

David Hancock sent a message today informing me that TERF01 was at the landfill in Sechelt. I guess Sechelt is a popular spot for TERF01 it seems to be hanging around here. I was out but sent Sandra (stim) an email and she and hubby David took a trip to the landfill looking for the eagle with the transmitter but they were unable to locate :eag: there. We also posted the information on the Wildlife Spotting on the Sunshine Coast FB forum.

We need a smilie with an eagle and a transmitter attached. :D

In Tweedsmuir Provincial Park they have a platform for tourists to watch Grizzly Bears with an electric fence around it (grizzly bear season starts in September.) Parks staff are there who know about the bears. The bears are busy feeding on the salmon there to bother the tourists but they do advise tourists to carry bear spray with them!

It looks as if TERF01 hasn't checked in since August 8 - which is not surprising as it looks like a fairly rugged area that is unlikely to have good cell tower coverage.

Here are two images zoomed in a bit on the area where she last checked in, one in map view and the other in satellite view.

The map view has the option to show the terrain, which I chose as there was more interesting terrain than streets in that area!

Hopefully she'll check in again soon - but she is probably looking for the northern salmon rivers, and I'm guessing many of them are pretty wild without a lot of cell towers.

I'm not sure, Marg, but I think the map is showing data from mid-August, not current data.

The good news is that all 4 eagles who stayed near the coast - TERF01, and the three that went further north into the Alaska panhandle - have all been out of touch for more or less a month (different dates for each) - and BACA01 just checked in!

I'm always an optimist, and I've been hoping that they all stopped transmitting because they moved into a more wilderness area where there were fewer cell towers, and would be returning to the coast when the inland salmon rivers finished spawning - and that may be happening!

We still need to hear from BACA02 and TERF04, as well as TERF01 - but now that BACA01 has checked in, I'm hoping the others will be showing up in the next week or two. :)

Here's the map showing all of them, and the color code to tell who is who; TERF05 (orange on the map) went her own way and has been near Great Slave Lake, north of Hay River in the Northwest Territory - she has her own thread here - viewtopic.php?f=95&t=275

Looks like a lovely area for an eagle to hang out, Marg! I wonder where she was during the past month - sometimes they save their locations when they're not transmitting, but my phone app isn't showing anything before yesterday.
