4:30pm - northwest tip of Prince of Wales Island - near a lodge and other human activities - but still remote
5:30pm - across water to southern Kupreanof Island - appears to be undeveloped forested area

Here's a higher mag of the satellite view showing the river winding through forest to shore
Going higher in mag on map view, no name on the river/stream - but notice that Loki could have flew over White Rock.

Last tracker download was 11 days ago. Loki is somewhere out there on this one year anniversary of her release by OWL and the start of her travel adventures.

Preview of
2021 Cam Maintenance

Matching Drive
Hi everyone!

As we gear up for our annual drive to raise the funds necessary to clean the cams at as many of our nests as possible, I'd like to start by announcing a new way to support Hancock Wildlife Foundation. As many of you know, you can adopt your favorite HWF nest and eagle family for a year with a $250 donation (details). Starting this year, you can also adopt one of our eagles with a tracker for a year for $250! (I don't have a separate page yet so please use the "Adopt a Nest" link above and let us know which tagged eagle you'd like to adopt; the list of eagles we are currently tracking is on our website here - https://hancockwildlife.org/beta-bald-e ... -alliance/)

I think the tagged eagle (eagle with a tracking device) that many of us have heard the most about is BETA04 - also known as Loki, one of the 2020 fledglings from our Surrey Reserve nest:
Image
She had a bit of an accident with a powerline so was in rehab for a couple of weeks at O.W.L. (full story here), then was released on July 17 - and started her migration north on July 19 or 20, flying to Bella Coola, about 448 kilometers/279 miles away, in a little over a day. She was just 15 weeks old on July 20 when she made the flight, and had only been flying for about 3 weeks - wow!

In celebration of Loki's amazing flight to Bella Coola last year, we're going to start our annual matching drive a little early - so if you'd like to adopt Loki (or one of our other tagged eagles) for next year, the first $1000 in donations will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife Foundation.

We will have more information about plans for maintenance - and about the five eaglets we have been watching this season (Romeo at White Rock is 5-6 weeks younger than the eaglets at Delta 2 and Surrey Reserve, so it will probably be a couple of weeks before he or she fledges) - and about a few of the tagged eagles who are helping us learn where the thousands of eagles who come for the salmon run spend the rest of the year.

I really want to post this today even though it's not really quite ready for prime time - but I think it's so wonderful that Loki has been flying for a year and has explored so much of the west coast:
Image

Please help us continue to follow Loki and our other tagged eagles - and help us get ready for the cam maintenance that will happen in about a month!

Wow! Loki flew such a distance in about one day?! That is amazing.

Will Romeo be tagged?

I definitely have been amazed to see how far Loki has traveled in the last year, Tweety - and now that more of our young eagles are leaving the nest area, it does give us a sense of what they might be doing. We haven't started receiving data yet from TERF10 and TERF11, but they are both fledglings from this year, so we can compare their travels with that of Loki and of BETA03 and TERF06, who are the same age as Loki but weren't banded and tagged until the fall, so we don't know where they went initially.

It's unlikely that Romeo will be tagged. Unlike some other organizations, HWF doesn't go into the nests to band or tag the chicks, although they will be continuing to catch eagles at places where they gather and tag them as part of the BETA (Bald Eagle Tracking Alliance) project. If Romeo had a mishap and had to spend a couple of days at OWL to be checked out, David and Myles would probably try to put a tracker on him/her - but happily that doesn't happen very often.

This is interesting. I've been checking for tracker updates every day, and there is an update today - for July 18 & 19.
July 18th - overnight on Kulu Island
July 19th - Loki on Kulu at 1100am, on Prince of Wales Island by 500pm - beautiful places

Keeping my hopes up for more tracking reports, although I don't understand what causes the erratic downloading of the data.

I have no clue why, Lynne, but none of our eagles had checked in for a week or more, even the ones who usually post daily. Hopefully whatever the glitch was, it’s fixed now.

Thanks, Judy. I didn't realize that other trackers were not checking in as well. Hopefully all will resume downloading data :luck:
