Tracking BACA01

Post by SueB » Sun Sep 16, 2018 8:29 pm

Thank you Sharon for setting this topic up for me. I had started following BACA01 a while back but got caught up in other things and just now getting back. I will start my posting from the middle of March, which is just after the description that is entered for BACA01.

On March 12th, 2018 - BACA01 spent his night on the slopes in Grouse Mountain. Beautiful scenary from the top of the mountain.

Mar 23rd, 2018 - BACA01 was heading north, with a stop in Prince Rupert. I found this spot interesting because when I went to google maps a couple of the shots had eagles in them.
4.jpg
I was just assuming these were eagles flying around the area. Not sure if they really were though
5.jpg
But this one really caught my eye, just inside the gate, appears to be sitting on top of a pile of something. I couldn't get in any closer.

Mar 28th, 2018 - BACA01, continuing north, and decided that this area in Alaska would be a nice place to stop for a while. In fact he stayed in this area of islands until the beginning of July.
7.jpg
First stop was near the Alaskan Sourdough Lodge. Maybe looking for something good to eat.

BACA01 must really like the higher elevations and the snow capped mountains, as he stopped on Woronkofski Island
13.jpg
Wrangell Island was another place that BACA01 enjoyed. He seemed to like the Ferry area and down by the docks
14.jpg
As well as the area around the small airport, and especially by Petroglyph Beach. I didn't know what that was so had to look it up. Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surface by carving, picking, and incising, as a form of art. I'm sure I learned this way back when......but some things just escape your memory. Glad I could learn something new today.

BACA01 then went to Whale Pass, still in these same group of islands. Guess he found what he was looking for when he came across Salmon Bay Lake.

July 4th, 2018 - BACA01 started making his way further north and made some stops in Juneau, Alaska. He spent about a month up in this area, making stops at the DIPAC Macaulay Salmon Hatchery both on his way north as well as when he started coming back south.
18.jpg
BACA01 flew further north to the St Terese area, which is still part of Juneau.

In the St Terese area BACA01 spent some time at no other than, Eagle Beach Recreation Area. Guess this is where they all meet up and have some fun.
19.jpg
And another favorite spot just nearby to Eagle Beach was the Eagle River Scout Camp. Who wouldn't want to spend time here with those beautiful mountains in the distance, and being that it is right on the water, so plenty of fish.

On Aug 11th, 2018 BACA01 - starting making the trip south, and on 8/14 he stopped in an area along the Mole River on Admiralty Island. This island appears to be dense with trees and have some mountains. The river runs between some of these mountains. Looks like a nice quiet place to visit. BACA01 stayed along the Mole River until 8/29 when he began to go further south.

Sept 12th, 2018 - BACA01 flew down to the very southern tip of Admiralty Island onto a smaller island named Carroll Island. His last recording was on 9/14 at 11:00 am. Hoping to see that BACA01's tracker is back online so we can continue to follow his journey.

BACA01's tracker has not been recorded since 9/14/2018. Wonder what that means. Could the tracker just be damaged? Just hoping that he is okay and it's just the tracker that is out of order.

All four eagles who are spending the fall on the coast have been off-line quite a bit - I'm hoping that just means that there are salmon (or some other interesting prey) a bit further inland, where cell phone coverage is not that great, so they aren't usually in reach of cell towers for uploading their data. I find it very promising that BACA01 checked in, and am cautiously optimistic that we may hear from him occasionally over the next month or so, before he (perhaps) heads further south where they may be more towers.

Thanks Judy, that makes sense. I hope to see him make his way back south soon!

Good early morning Sue and all! I was just checking on a couple of non-HWF eagles on my phone app and I saw that BACA01 has just checked in! Keeping fingers crossed that some of the others are also on the move and will be near cell towers soon so we can see where they have been.

Thank you Judy! I'm just getting back here and so happy that BACA01 has been able to check in. It's hard not knowing where he's at and I was hoping to see him come south a little more.

9/14/18 - the last we had heard from BACA01, he was just off the coast of Carroll Island. Now we can see that he was still around there for that same day but then took a long trip south....well at least it looks long to me. He was at the location marked by the arrow on 9/14 at 5 pm, and flew south and checked in 3 hours later on Kuiu Island. Looks like a beautiful mountainous area with plenty of water around for fishing.

Ohhh, I just googled the distance from Carroll Island to Kuiu Island and it's 34.5 miles as the bird flies, I guess. So BACA01 was going a little over 10 miles an hour, since it took him 3 hours to make that trip.

BACA01 stayed in the Kuiu Island area for the next month, zigzagging around, until 10/18/18 when he started going a little further south, but appeared to still be on Kuiu Island

BACA01 made a quick stop at 5 pm the next day near Keku Strait.....probably to catch some dinner.

10/19/18 - Kupreanof Island is the place BACA01 stopped near the Keku Strait
2018-10-29 10_14_14-Greenshot.jpg
But BACA01 decided to spend that night on what appears to be a favorite place for him.....Zarembo Island. He had stopped here for quite a bit of time on his way north.

10/21/18 - BACA01 is still on Zarembo Island as of his last check in. Who wouldn't want to be here...it looks so beautiful!

I think David said somewhere that the trackers on these eagles couldn't communicate with cell towers in Washington state, because the frequency was a bit different than in BC - so now I'm wondering if BACA01 and other eagles visiting Alaska are only checking in when they get close enough to BC to be picked up by a tower there. It seems that all of the US would use the same frequency - though a bit strange that Canada's would be different. Amazing the things we learn by watching eagles!

PS - David has a few more tracking devices to deploy, and those have been adjusted so they will work in Washington as well as BC - so should also work in Alaska. I don't know when he's planning to use them.
