RIP 2023

12-08-2023. Kistachie National Forest E-3 Nest, Louisiana. Bald Eagle †Andria†.

🙏Andria🙏, Alex's mate, 2 eggs of around 20do inside the nest but Andria wasn't able to assume her duty and so probably the eggs were already nonviable.

Almost in the same time, Alex was incubating their two eggs as he did every morning without knowing what happened to his beloved Queen

From U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest 01-03-2024 https://www.facebook.com/KisatchieNF
We have received word from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital that the results from Anna (E-1 Female) were inconclusive as to whether Anna had Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Upon learning this, the veterinarian went to retrieve Anna's body from the freezer to run a second test and learned that Anna's body had been incinerated. This news is very disappointing to us all as we really wanted to know what had made Anna ill. Based on clinical science and the symptoms she presented on New Year's Day, the veterinarian did say he believes Anna was infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Another female eagle from nest E-3, Andria, died earlier in December and we are still waiting on her necropsy results. We have called the facility in Georgia where she was sent and they do not have any results yet. These tests take weeks to perform and we were told once they reach a determination, Andria will be sent to another USDA facility for confirmation of the diagnosis, so this may take months before we receive any results. >sigh< 😞
We understand your frustration and disappointment, as we feel the same way. We have lost two beautiful mama eagles that we have all come to love and have no definitive answers as to what killed them. 😢 We will keep you posted when we do hear back about Andria's results. Meanwhile, in the next weeks, we will learn all we can about HPAI (how long does it linger, how is it spread, why some succumb and others do not, is there anything we can do to stop the spread, etc.) We will also continue to watch the happenings at E-1 and E-3. Looks like the new pair at E-3 may decide to move in permanently. ❤🦅❤ Watch Live cams here: https://www.youtube.com/@KNFcams/streams

What I'm sure of now, wherever she is, †Andria†'s soul is in 🙏 the hands of God, his true father 🙏.

RIP beautiful and precious †Andria† as it was Gods's choice to allow you to enter HIS mystery :cry1: :brknhrt: 🙏

During your last fall, †Andria† like an Angel, you unzipped your feathered down coat and your soul flew away to the Heavens where you were welcome, i'm sure by all the bald eaglets who shared the same fate as you, leaving us alone so early. May be you were welcome by some of your family older members and offsprings :luck: . 🙏 😭💔

Now you are flying among the stars, marvellous †Andria†. :rh: 🙏

†Andria†, of course you have a special place in our heart forever... :rh:

†Andria†, Fly high and freely with your two offsprings and protect your family, Alex your mate, your live and flying eaglets from the previous season. Do not forget us too as we will need your help too to spent this hard moment without you. Don't forget also, God has certainly a new and beautiful mission for you . :luck: . :rh:

Dear †Andria†, I hope you didn't suffer too much during your last moment fall as it is said you died at the contact with the ground. I'm sure the big pain you had in your head stopped very quickly. Now you are a free soaring bald eagle with a full crop forever and will never be alone and always with your two little guys who will never hatch... as you aere far from them a too long time with your illness. 😢 Rest In Peace Andria 🙏

🙏 †Andria† 🙏 :cry1: :brknhrt:

Another 1 more stab wounds straight to the :rh: heart. I thought that afterwards we removed them and that there was no trace of them but in fact they continue to accumulate... :brknhrt: :brknhrt: :brknhrt:

By dint of enduring and sharing these pains, these sorrows, this sadness and all these tears with all our little feathered friends, young or old, for that matter, maybe one day I will have to withdraw completely for an indefinite period because that season has been particularly terrible despite some wonderful and happy successes.

It is possible that I scatter a little too much in the different nests or there is a real hecatomb this year in terms of the survival of the chicks. Considering what I read in the various forums, I think more for the hecatomb.

RIP 2024

01-01-2024. Kistachie National Forest E-1 Nest, Louisiana. Bald Eagle †Anna†.

Dad Louis beloved's Mate. They were incubating one egg.

KNF, after Andria may be the same problem with Anna...

12.28.23 Video by Lady Hawk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAgIDiqSG_Q
KNF Kisatchie Nest Cam E1 ~ ANNA IS ILL & EXPERIENCING BALANCE ISSUES! Similar To Andria "The USFWS has put a "Rush" status on Andria's toxicology report and necropsy. These symptoms that Anna is experiencing seem to be similar to the ones Andria experienced three weeks ago. But it is not known if this is the same problem or something else so we really can't speculate at this time. The rangers have been made aware of the situation and are monitoring the nest. We are all keeping Anna in our prayers that she can overcome this illness and stay strong. Thank you for watching!" 😢

U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest
Poor Anna, she was not able to incubate correctly and so like in the E3 nest, the eggs after a too long time without a warm cover are not viable at all even if Lois tried to compensate but he also had to go away, for his food....

Finally after a long time away, Anna flew not far from the nest and she was grounded by another female at the end of a day. The ground crew was able to catch her and to sent her to a vet labo the day after.

U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest

What excitement to ring in the New Year with our resident eagles! For those of you just tuning in, Anna, the female in E-1 (mate is Louis), showed signs of being unwell a few days ago. However, her symptoms were a little different from Andria (the female eagle of E-3 which died on 12/8/2023, cause still unknown, waiting on necropsy results.) Anna was last seen on Saturday; but made an appearance on Sunday at dusk when ANOTHER female eagle ambushed her in mid-air and knocked her to the ground! Everything was caught on the eagle cams so Forest Service staff were able to hasten to the site and capture Anna using a large net and blanket. Anna was transferred to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital in Baton Rouge for assessment by wildlife biologist tech, Cody Austell. Thank you, Cody, and wildlife biologist, Steve Shively, for going out last night to search for Anna. Many thanks to the YouTube Bald Eagle Cam viewers who helped us retrieve Anna by monitoring the nest and eagle behavior closely. The veterinarian is running tests on Anna to determine if Avian Flu may be the culprit. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, is fatal to birds, so this is a very serious disease. We are all hoping and praying the best for Anna. MEANWHILE, "As the Nest Turns," a NEW pair of eagles have done a walk-through of the E-3 nest and may decide to take up residence if they like the neighborhood as Alex has flown the proverbial coop and not been seen for days. Louis has tried to continue to incubate his and Anna's single egg while a new Female has appeared and tried to get cozy. He was having none of it but she is persistent and continues to hang around. She may have been the culprit who chased poor Anna away and knocked her down. STAY TUNED AS WE ALL WAIT TO SEE WHAT 2024 BRINGS! RIP 2024

01-01-2024. Kistachie National Forest E-1 Nest, Louisiana. Bald Eagle †Anna†.

Dad Louis beloved's Mate. They were incubating one egg.

2024-01-05_16h02_10.jpg
Kisatchie National Forest
The 30th december she flew away just after Louis and was back the day after before the evening when she was grounded by another female, Louis at that time was spending most of his time incubating their egg.

Anna is now "in hand"!!!! She is alive!!! She will be going first thing in the morning to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s Wildlife Hospital which is the best place in the state for her to go. 12-31.

This is not the post we had hoped to make today. We are saddened and heartbroken to inform everyone that Anna died yesterday on January 1. Anna began to present symptoms of nasal discharge, diarrhea, and slight tremors while at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital. She even had a seizure, indicating she was having serious neurological distress. Before she could suffer worse symptoms, the vet euthanized her. The results of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) test will tell us definitely if Anna had the disease, although everything does present as if she did. If she did not have HPAI, her body has been frozen and a necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause. As soon as we receive the results from the test run on Anna, we will let you all know. Why did Anna have to be euthanized so quickly rather than wait 48 to 72 hours for the test results? 1) Anna was suffering, and 2) LSU does not have a bio-secure area to hold sick animals. Since Anna appeared to have HPAI, if they kept her and it was confirmed she had the disease, they would have to euthanize every bird in their facility - including three eagles undergoing rehabilitation, a Cooper's Hawk, and many other raptors and various other birds. Avian Flu is a serious, deadly disease of all birds that is of grave concern. Many have asked how they can contribute to the conservation and care of eagles.

And last message to read before to say a definitive good bye to Anna and Andria

So poor Anna, you were not treated as Andria, first you were euthanized, Andria died when she felt down, Your body was incinerated, not the Andria's jus becaus one believes you had HPAI, but Andeia has may be the same desease and they are still making necropsy and even with the result her body will go to another center to confirm so in France we used to say "deux poids, deux mesures" in english Two weights, two measures like 2 labos => 2 different treatments... the bad one was for Anna in fact.

What I'm sure of now, wherever she is, †Anna†'s soul is in 🙏 the hands of God, his true father 🙏.

RIP beautiful and precious †Anna† as it was Gods's choice to allow you to enter HIS mystery :cry1: :brknhrt: 🙏

During your last moment, †Andria† like an Angel, you unzipped your feathered down coat and your soul flew away to the Heavens where you were welcome, i'm sure by all the bald eaglets who shared the same fate as you, leaving us alone so early. May be you were welcome by some of your family older members siblings and offsprings :luck: . 🙏 😭💔

Now you are flying among the stars, marvellous †Anna†. :rh: 🙏

†Anna†, of course you have a special place in our heart forever... :rh:

†Anna†, Fly high and freely with your offspring (still in ts shell and protect your family, Louis your mate and his future offsprings. Do not forget us too as we will need your help too to spent this hard moment without you. Don't forget also, God has certainly a new and beautiful mission for you . :luck: . :rh:

Dear †Anna†, I hope you didn't suffer too much during your last moment as it is said they killed you as you were may be suffering and they incinerated your body becaus some one "BELIEVES" you had HPAI. I'm sure the big pain you had in your head stopped very quickly. Now you are a free soaring bald eagle with a full crop forever and will never be alone and always with your little guy who will never hatch and was certainly waiting for you... as you were far from them a too long time with your illness. 😢 Rest In Peace Anna 🙏

A white-tailed eagle, a strictly protected species subject to a reintroduction program, was killed by poachers on February 24 in Isère. Two hunters admitted to shooting the eagle. They were placed under judicial supervision and will be judged on May 13.

Morzine, a young white-tailed eagle born in captivity, was illegally killed at the end of February in a remote valley in Oisans, in Isère, just a few months after its reintroduction into the wild. Two hunters aged 30 and 35, members of the same family, were placed in police custody on Wednesday March 13 and admitted the facts, France 3 Alpes learned from the Grenoble prosecutor's office.

The investigation began after the discovery, on February 24, of the remains of the eagle shot near the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de La Salette. Investigators from the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), jointly responsible for the investigations with the Monestier-de-Clermont gendarmerie brigade, were quickly able to identify two suspects.

The latter allegedly killed two deer irregularly. One of them then shot down the raptor with a wingspan of more than two meters, leaving its corpse on the scene before continuing the hunting party. Feathers, taken from the animal, were discovered at their homes during searches carried out this Wednesday morning.

The remains of the raptor were discovered in the Oisans massif, at an altitude of 1700 meters

In police custody, the hunters admitted the facts, the shooting of the animal for one and complicity for the other. They were placed under judicial supervision this Thursday and will be judged on May 13 for two reasons concerning the eagle: "destruction" and "illicit possession of a protected non-domestic species". For each of these acts, the thirty-year-olds face a penalty of up to three years' imprisonment and a fine of 150,000 euros.

The white-tailed eagle, classified as "critically endangered", benefits from a total protection status prohibiting the killing or even disturbing of these birds, the last pair of which in the wild was shot 130 years ago in the Lake Geneva basin. The species is the subject of a reintroduction program launched by the Les Aigles du Léman park, based in Haute-Savoie. The one-year-old female is the second raptor to be killed since the program began in the summer of 2022.

An “unbearable gratuitous act”

Morzine was released into the wild on September 4 with nine of her peers. In perfect health, she had settled near the Drac river, not far from Grenoble, and took advantage of the melting snow to feed on carcasses in the mountains. “Until she met two idiots who decided that her journey was going to end there,” denounces Jacques-Olivier Travers, founder of the Eagles of Léman, at the origin of the reintroduction program.

“It’s infuriating because we know how difficult it is for these birds, when they are born in captivity, to find a place in nature. When they get there, the least we can do is give them a chance ", he pleads, hoping for an exemplary conviction of the poachers.

"When you kill an eagle, you don't just kill an animal, you kill all the hope of the people who participated in its reintroduction."
Jacques-Olivier Travers, founder of the Eagles of Léman

Jacques-Olivier Travers filed a complaint against X, as did two other environmental protection associations. The Isère Hunting Federation will file a civil suit. “A hunter must identify the animal and we have draconian instructions before shooting. I don’t understand how we can commit such a serious mistake,” asks Danièle Chenavier, president of the Isère Federation, “outraged” by this shooting "unacceptable".

"When you are a hunter, you must know what a protected species is, you must know the difference between an eagle and a duck. And when you are at an altitude of 1,700 meters and you see an eagle passing by, we must not shoot him. We must stop this massacre,” says Jacques-Olivier Travers, disillusioned by this “unbearable gratuitous act.”

The remains of an eagle, mutilated to "make a trophy", had already been discovered in Germany last April. This second slaughter therefore increases anger among those working for its reintroduction. “When you kill an eagle, you are not just killing an animal, you are killing all the hope of the people who participated in its reintroduction. If we let it happen, there is no point in fighting,” insists the falconer.

There are only five pairs of eagles in the wild in France. Fourteen young eagles have been reintroduced into the wild by the Parc des Aigles du Léman since June 2022. Ultimately, the program should make it possible to release 70 other juveniles by 2030 to sustain the reintroduction of the largest eagle in Europe.

If someone or several others are ready to take up the torch here and take care of all my little and big friends who have left for good with all our love and noted here all these years, the place is free

To all,
Sorry, my state of health does not allow me to seriously monitor these different losses... Maybe it's only temporary, which is what I hope, or worse, we'll see. :huggie: :bye 1:
Sending good thoughts your way, Phil!

Praying your health will return soon; take care of yourself first but know that you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all you have done here and all the nest sites that you have so faithfully monitored. Take care mon ami
